Am i the only one who thinks it would be such a buff to give gief an instant air shangrila version of U2? man even 2 HCB’s like Hawks U2 would be better.
I don’t know, I think he kind of has it in an instant capacity; but we are all training ourselves all the time to stay grounded for 720’s. If you just un-buffer into something you have a 360 with Gief starting to jump and just make some butter for the Ultra. Just feels so damn awkward.
Yeah i know but it just feels hella hard to do on reaction esp for a fireball-Akuma DF setup
Wow, art is one hell of a mind fucker. He waited for the final set to go with FB zoning…
Good shit doh son.
I actually prefer 720s to 2x hcb…it’s seriously no hard at all to spin the stick twice fast…maybe on a pad I’d prefer HCB or something…

I agree with that when it comes to buffering out u1 during stun or hiding it the animation of another move. Easily spam-able and your timing only needs to be on point for when you hit 3P. (Although maybe churning butter may tip off the guy next to you what your doing).
But for the SB, i just think a shorter more concise movement would be better. I want to be able to buffer HCB and if I see a punishable move, hit the second HCB + 3K. With the 360 you have to hide your first 360 in a normal to keep from jumping and depending on the character’s approach and space, that normal will get hit, i.e fireball
One question guys. I’ve been wanting to use Gief’s light attacks option-select into EX GH more effectively into my footsies. So there’s a few options: 1) st.lp o-s into EX GH 2) st.lk o-s into EX GH 3) cr.lp o-s into EX GH and 4) cr.lk o-s into EX GH
Can you guys give some insight as to which option select is usable against which situation? I can only figure out option 3 is effective against sagat and chun’s st.hk.
Kind of tough to respond to that because they aren’t really reaction based. It is more just having them out there and active. You will do c.lk OS, they will get hit and adapt, you will switch to s.lp and c.lp OS, they will adapt, etc. Unless I am just plain thinking about it incorrectly.
Nah, that makes total sense. But i think maybe he’s getting at what might be better vs a certain character overall. Maybe because they lead with a certain poke all the time.
Bison for example always leads with s.mk or s.hk, both of which seem to be shitty for giefs c.lk so cr. lp in that match seems to be 8/10 the better o-s poke.
I prefer cr. lk vs Juri, shotos, cody, hk spamming chuns, but go with cr.lp for everyone else.
Anyone else know where st. lk/lp could be of use?
I don’t treally use the s.lk one very much at all, since c.lk has very similar range and hits low. S.lp is nice for its speed.
GOD FUCKING DAMMIT. I don’t care what anyone says there is no way, ABSOLUTELY NO WAY IN HELL Balrog vs Zangief isn’t a 7-3 matchup in Balrog’s favor. His reach, his strength, everything COMPLETELY shuts down all of Zangief’s options and all he has to do is get a life lead and sit on his ass for the rest of the round. Jab hitconfirms don’t do shit against him because you have to be in jabbing DISTANCE to get anything from those and that’s well within territory he has complete dominance over.
Take a deep breath lol. It is not 7-3 in Rog’s favor, it is still in Gief’s favor, just not quite as decisively as in Vanilla. Read the Boxer write up on the first page of this thread, it is really helpful.
A couple quick things to start playing around with: Play for a knockdown, Rog has very little he can do on wakeup and headbutts are very punishable; s.mp is your friend, from any distance outside of footsies throw out s.lp and c.lp OS- even if they aren’t OS they will keep a lot or rogs from rush punches; recognize when rush punches are deep enough for SPD; and the most basic, if he is crouching don’t ever jump (I still fuck up on this one) if he takes one step forward you are free to do whatever, but if he is crouching just walk towards him and play for a knockdown/SPD.
Going after him on wakeup doesn’t work for me because if I go into j.:d:+:lk: > atomic suplex he just grabs me out of it. Also smart Rogs NEVER use the fierce/roundhouse buttons when they do their rush punches, which means they’re never going to be deep enough for an SPD unless I block a turn punch.
Then go for something other than j.:d:+:lk: > atomic suplex? Why not splash xx c.lp… or short jump knees to c.lp, or whiff splash to SPD, or walk up c.lk tick to whatever… problem solve. What do you want to hear? Just need to vent or something?
No, no matter what I do to cross him up on wakeup he just blocks and throws me out of it. Plus there’s the risk of him just doing a wakeup headbutt.
A deep wake up splash doubles as a safe jump vs wake up HB. Then punish with SPD of choice.
My main question is what should I be trying to do if he gets a life lead?
So if bison uses his u2 vs gief as an anti air and you are empty jumping if the timing is perfect you can ex spd him out of it. I somehow randomly landed this / figured out it was possible vs a bison in tournament play in the losers bracket of group 13. After ex spding him I turned to him and said “what you have never seen that before?” I won that match.
I’ m not the best Gief, by a long shot, but honestly, I find that if something isn’t working, I simply don’t do it. Now, that doesn’t mean you erase the threat, but the concept of ‘mix-up’ is to confuse your opponenet into a situatio nwhere they are trying to counter your account, but end up falling for something else. So you keep trying to knees xx AS…and your getting thrown/headbutt out of it…fine, then pretend when Balrog is on the ground is the same as when he’s crouching, because essenitally it is…with one major difference - he can’t poke/footsy you out of SPD range. Do you have the range on jab SPD don’t pat? Do a s.mp on Balrog in training mode until your at the range where it won’t hit him unless he attacks…jab SPD is somewhere around there (a little less). So, if your wake-up game is all cross-up knees to AS - there is no mix-up, it’s predictable. You get thrown out of knees because unless you do it at “his knee height” (see vanilla Gief trial mode combo with knees into c.lk…got to beat up Dan’s knees to combo) - then he’s wide open to counter you afterwards, and there are ‘landing frames’ - which is where your gettin eatin up at by spammed throws. So to avoid this 1) don’t do knees on Balrog if he’s not falling for it 2) do an attack that creates more blockstun (splash) to mask landing and switching to atomic suplex or SPD. Also mix in empty jumps, I can’ stress it enough, learn the timing and do meaty/safe jumps to bait a headbutt and punish. Rog only has a couple wake-up options and everyone them screams “SPD”. I’m not going to pretend like it’s easy, but if you want to beat Rog, you can’t rely on ‘shennanigans’ - which IMO knees xx AS is (it’s not even really a tick at the normal height you’ll land it on Balog).
Be patient, bait, and SPD footsies.
As GurmoPrimo stated, even throwing out random shorts/jabs/strongs are reat in this match up because it paralyzes Rog from doing anytype of aggresive advancement, allowing you to push him into the corner and use the SPD as a footsy to punish him squatting (don’t forget that squating also makes his hit box bigger so the range on jab SPD is really crucial in this match-up.

I dont like SPD Footsies vs Rog. Its great if you can get in close enough to him were you can get him when hes not throwing things out. But it moves your hitbox too far forward and if you wiff it free sweep and his moves are really fast. I love standing strong vs him. It beats out all his standing pokes. You can reacte to all his standing moves with it when you get in a footsie battle with him and you can hang in there. If hes just tossing out sweeps all the time you can start using s lk or s mk to punish. You need to do this and never jump in on a good rog he will just AA you you dont have anything other than bait emptys which you cant do if hes got down charge. On wake UP meaty splash to OS lk egh That way if he dash punches you hit him with the LK and the exgh comes out. If he headbuts SPD or ultra.
