Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

lol… yo i have figured out the most useless piece of info ever today. ZANGIEF ACTUALLY HAS A KARA LARIAT lol .wow, i bet i will start winning tournaments now lol sarcasm

Being a pretty good sim player, I don’t see it being all that useful unless for some reason they decide to throw out jumping mp or neutral hk. Headbutt has ridiculous stun, but a good Sim player should not be getting hit by that, especially since he should never purposefully be close to you. Stay on the ground and lariat if he dares to teleport and pressure him. The only way they can get out easily is by landing ultra 1 or 2 on you or sliding under you when you jump, or if you fail a command throw they could drill out. Lariat is punishable as well so use it sparingly.

I haven’t hit training mode to look for solutions, but is there a good way to stop Adon’s Jaguar Kick spam? I’ve played a few online who keep spamming the kick over and over and I couldn’t think of a way to counter it as I just kept getting hit.

I’m still trying to figure out the Adon mu myself. I think you can beat or trade HK jaguar kicks with kkk lariat on reaction. But he might be able to bait it out and punish. I’m not sure. You might still be safe if he does lk instead hk to bait the kkk lariat. Also, blocked hk jaguar kicks are -2 I believe so you should be able to reversal SPD him. I know you can reversal ultra or super him. His nj HK seems to be pretty safe on your wake up. I tried to do various stuff to beat it but it didn’t seem to work. If he really mis times it, you probably can hit him out of it with st.lp. But it seems like he has pretty good wake up pressure like Sakura on your wake up. He can be safe jumped. I think RJ has 5 frame start up. Adon has pretty good priority on his st.hk. You have to becareful of that when he tries to zone you out. You can catch his recovery frames on that move with cr.lp into exgh. You MIGHT be able to bait out HK JK by neutral jumping and landing behind him and SPD. I’m not sure if he recovers in time or not. I need to check that out.

Dee-Jay’s wake-up Jack-knife Maximum seems to completely shut-down Zangiefs meaty double knee or flying body slam even on cross-up. Not really sure what I can do other than to bait that wake-up. Or am I just timing it wrong? Pretty sure the same could be said about flash kick. Is there really much I can do on their wake-up >.>?

To me its getting harder for Gief to apply jump over wake up pressure. (Yo seriously, is there an on-line tutorial for auto-correct DP, cuz like everyone seems to know this shit now)

anyway, the Pros will comment a some point but i think there are just certain characters who Gief just cant cross mix up. Blanka, Doofus with U2, Chun with EX, Cammy [dunno why her DP is braindead easy to autocorrect] and DJ. If your god like use u2 and hit 720+ x3 kicks if he unloads. It can be a totally guess but it does seem to keep some DJ’s grounded a bit more.

Start up on that is really fast it’s pretty easy to bait with a early safe jump. Also I use u2 vs dj for this reason it stuffs that so if you can land u2 round one he won’t spam that anymore on wake up. But yes there is no way to trick or stuff that move.

It has 4 frame start up. If you’re good, you can safe jump it. Same with Blanka’s ex roll. You don’t need to jump in on them every time. Mix it up and bait it out then punish. I’d rather do that than a blind guess with U2.

This. I’m stunned at how few people use U2 in situations where it is guaranteed to help you out in the matchup. In matchups where characters are almost guaranteed to use specific airborne moves to recover you should literally always be taking U2 with the intent to punish.

E. Honda, Chun-Li, Guy, Dee Jay, Bison, Blanka I religiously pick U2 and I’m almost guaranteed to land the move at least once. Players who use these characters are conditioned to rely on very specific oki moves and you are almost guaranteed to land a Blizzard to devestating effect. And as has been pointed out ad nauseum, even if you don’t you have to at least make them think that you’re capable of it which can eliminate some of their strongest escape mechanisms.

The difference is, I can bait out their moves just as easily without having to blindly guess. Baiting out their moves and punishing with U1 gives me more damage and leaves me safe if they don’t fall for the bait. U2 is a blind guess. You will get punished severely if they don’t fall for it and if you land it, you get less damage then had you used U1. The only advantage of U2 is that it might make them think twice about using a certain move. I agree with that. I’ve been picking it for the Chun match. It also depends on the person you’re playing. If I know the honda loves to wake up ex headbutt, I might pick U2. But there are other ways to deal with wake up ex headbutt without U2. I don’t see how you can punish on reaction with U2 to any of those people that you couldn’t punish on reaction with U1. U2 is pretty much always a guess aside from maybe countering demon flips.

^That.

i hate dee jay n hondas wake up options >_> wats worse is i gotta use ultra2(which i hate)

need some help.

how do deal with hakan’s kick throw (the one where he slips on the ground) on wakeup? some guy last night kept doing it to me as i was waking up and i couldn’t get out of it. I tried jumping, backdashing, blocking, crouching, ex greenhand, lariat, ultra, and none of those got me out consistently. does he have some sort of unblockable throw going on here? i felt like the only time i got out was when he messed up the timing. any help is appreciated.

I thought Oil Dive whiffed crouching opponents? IIRC it catches airborn, backdash, and standing block. Hakan is considered airborn so no throws will get him after he launches. Don’t know about Crouch or Kick lariat…

It’s Hakan’s DDT setup. Ultra David post some videos up of the setup. It’s inescapable. Like Cammy’s hooligan setup. When you are getting up, there’s a frame or 2 where you’re considered standing. They can grab you out of those frames if they time their moves right. I’m not sure if gief has any way of getting out of this… If you’re Ryu, you could just DP. Maybe try front dash? I’m not sure if that will work.

Wow, that is pretty cool. Sounds like my kinda cheap. Gotta love that oily bastard.

Yea, people really are sleeping on Hakkan. He’s got some off the wall shit. If he gets any buffs on new releases he will mos def go up a tier or two. Not that teirs matter…

The only way to try to get out of that Hakan setup when done correctly is by doing a crouching normal. Any crouching normal will do so you can press multiple ones to get more chances to get the timing right.

U2 doesn’t have to be a guess. You get a nice yellow flash and I would say 4-6 frames to hit kkk if your buffering it vs dj Honda chun.

^ This. Plus if you they don’t do anything because they smell you going for the Ultra then they just let you empty jump for free for EX 360K, 360K or Super since you’ve got your butter all churned up Land O’ Lakes style. See yellow KKK it up. No yellow? Land and punish. The more practice the easier it becomes.

I get empty jump EX Suplex almost as much as I get the Blizzard with the Purple light flashing. And then guess what? Back to the Russian Folgers game with that much less health to guess wrong.
