Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

Are you talking about Running Bear Grab or Atomic Suplex? I assume you’re talking about the latter…?

Fierce SPD does more damage than Atomic Suplex, but AS leads to a much better mixup, which has a much better chance of leading to immediate damage afterwards.

Sort of both.

Yes Now you mention it the landing of the suplex is preferable to that of spd.

However I still don’t understand the use of non ex running bear grab.

None that I can think of, but it would be interesting to see if you couldn’t work it into some character/move specific option selects.

Is U2 a must against juri or can U1 work well against her too?

Also, Atomic Suplex gives you much more meter.

yet another reason to use his awesome suplex other then it leaves you pretty close to them

U2 is a must against no one.

except characters who spend so little time on the ground

how do i deal with viper players that likes to cr.mk, medium thunderknuckle?

Suplex last I remember gave the most ex meter than any other move in the game. A regular bear grab is more or less useless but entertaining when it comes out by accident and hits.
U2 I still havent found a case id rather have that.

Man unless I start seeing Zangitan or IFC or Ahola using U2, I’m not buying what your selling. That shit is too random with shit range and shit damage and if you miss your in for a world of hurt. I mean yeah u1 is guess work too but at least you can tick/whiff ultra if your crafty. Unless of course you have god lk reflexes and always buffer 720 from leaving the ground and press triple kick if applicable in the air. I’d rather not spend the entire round fishing for an unreliable ultra.

I mean, I’ve tried it against DJ, Chun and guy to limit their wake up tatsu’s, but again too random. (You know come to think of it if you did have God lk reaction time you could react if they tatsu or if not wait till you hit the ground to triple kick, but meh)

This dang debate over U1 and U2…

U1 is good VS all. Gief has had this grab forever and you will always be able to use it vs any matchup. Of course Gief has bad matchups where it will be almost impossible to land U1, but U2 wont do you any better (eg:seth). I would break it down as:

U1 - Able to set up. Extreme damage.
U2 - Only on reaction / psych. Pretty good damage.

U1 is all around better ultra just because of the simple fact that you can land it on the ground. Landing it all depends on how you set up and train your opponent. Plus, since your ultra now is a 0 frame deathtrap for ground game, this is much more scary than a less damaging ultra that requires them to jump. Think about U2 with Gief as similar to srk>u1 with Ryu . If he doesn’t have 2 bars but has ultra, there is no threat of being ultra’ed if you simply don’t jump which is very easy to do against Zangief since he alreay has god AA with cr.PPP that will combo into EX GHand.

They are already scared to jump in on you! U2 is not even needed.

I didn’t really need to say all this stuff but really, U1>U2 by a mileeee!

But I do firmly stand by U2 being GREAT for the Chun matchup but really that is the only time I would pick it and be serious.

It’s been a LONG time since I’ve fought that, but can’t you c.lk xx EXGH on block? Or is the block stun too much? I’d set it up in training mode and see if you can do c.lk/s.lk xx EXGH or jab SPD on block. From when I played Viper, I prefered c.mp because hte spacing on c.mk - while better, didn’t work so hot for thunder knuckle distance (I’d get counter SRK’d on block)…

You can also play a bait game with it, and if you wait and the broad is dumb enough to do it a second time, I’m positive her recovery is longenough for extreme punishment…just not sure on a proerply spaed c.mk xx TK

can anyone help me cecipher this method of doing walking 720’s?

He’s using numeric inputs and it just looks like a math problem to me. gracias.

The video got deleted, but I assume you’re talking about this one:

:lk: -> :lk:+:ub::hcf: Walk forward :hcb::ub:+:3p:

And I guess a note, on the second l.k, you have to press up back slightly after hitting the kick button, otherwise you’ll jump. Works with punches, too.

I played a long Gief vs. Gief set with JasonC and U2 is a good deterrent in this matchup. He used it pretty effectively and it shut down any air games on wakeup. After I ate a couple (well, a shitload) of Ultra 2’s I was reluctant to do about 2/3 of my wakeup stuff.

GuruPrimo, I gotta teach you how to beat Bison. I’ll see if I can get online or something before the next session. You got a mic, right?

How are you gonna teach him when you can’t beat Bison yourself?

Ohhhhh snap.

And just so that this post isn’t completely useless, U2 will whiff if Bison’s DR is over gief’s head. Standing strong also does a decent job of trading/stuffing with Bison’s standing roundhouse.

There any general strats against Cody?

What do you do against a GOOD seth player, Ive got done up pretty bad Seth doing 25 hit non ultra/super. Most seth players turtle with sonic booms and then when I get close stretch there arms out and run and do it over and over so ANNOYING.
