Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

Regular ex-hand works, but I suggest that you do the lp~mp kara ex-hand in this case. It is really easy to do and you have nothing to lose. If you miss it, a regular ex-hand will come out anyway.

Notation for the LP~MP kara ex-hand:
DP motion, LP~MP

i need help in the seth match up. Does anyone know what beats what? please start from the top like, what beats j.hp from seth st.hp and just the overall match up how should i play it thanks

Hey guys. I have a quick question regarding the matchup against Akuma.

I was playing at an arcade in Yokohama and noticed that my opponent, Akuma, was destroying me in the corner.

When he knocked me down, he would fly at me and grab me. If I jumped, I got SRKed. If I stood there, I got grabbed. I died before I could try to dash, but I’m sure I would get SRK’ed as well. And obviously, green hand gets thrown.

I’m pretty sure he was option selecting his command grab with a shoryuken.

Any advice for this? He did this when I used claw as well.

Keep in mind I was in the corner. He killed my character with this…too embarrassing lol

Er… I just thought…would jumping forward work? Or would the shoryuken come out on the other side?

Hey Final. Its tricky you can KKK his st.hp if you time it right also you can crouch PPP his J.HP if you time it right you have to do it after the arms come out. If you are Jumping and his J.HP goes below you can MP it But the match up is pretty much dont get hurt to much hope he throws a sonic boom to close to you and you can ex green hand then mix him up on wake up and keep backing him into the corner. Then once hes there he will try and wall hop over you HP head butt him when he tries to do this. Also HP head but can beat the J.HP but its a bitch to land i do it at the begining of the match. Make sure when he jumps in on you if he is stupid enough to do thatyou punish with

Thanks for the info… i have a hard time with seth… i really struggle in that match up.

i’m just posting this again because i’m not sure if anyone will find it on the last post of the previous page:

If he’s using the demon flips mixup, standing jab works amazing wonders. Also, dash under his demon flip, you’ll have a free SPD. Remember that your standing mp is VERY strong against him, and should help establish the ground game in your favor keeping you out of the corner. But once he gets a knock down, and he “flies at you” or demon flips, standing jab will pull him out of the air.

cr.mp stuffs his j.hp clean if timed right. just be patient and slowly work your way in and try and land that headbutt. i found that if you’re impatient in this match then you’re gonna lose quick. also try using j.mk when jumping over his booms to stuff his arms.

Like Willix mentioned, you can just simply hold crouch. Usually the punch should whiff because he’s jumping back and not in, and the startup frames are not fast enough to come out when Rog is at the low point in the air. The other option is to back dash on wake. Reason being, you can exploit some of the invulnerability frames by doing so, and secondly, if they try to throw you on wake, you have great great positioning to get close up and do more damage. If they try this when you’re in the corner, you get a free SPD and mixup opportunities on a whiffed throw.

Ultradavid… you made my day <3 Thanks babe

Crazy, Hsien was doing the exact same thing to be a few weeks ago

Since I’m the only main Zangief player at UFO, no one could really give me an answer

I was practicing with one of the guys doing it on me, and I got out with jumping forward, but he assumed he was just timing it wrong

Glad to now that does work

Are footsies worthless vs chun? vs very high level chun “shizza level players” I can’t seem to get in close enough to use footsies. Is there a good way to punish the whiffs of rh or sweep that chun uses to keep u out of footsies range.

On whiff s.lp and s.mp. On stuff cr.lk because chun can’t hit you @ max range while crouching so you are free to buffer try as much as possible.

How hard is zangief to learn? I’m looking for another character to learn because, so far all I know is Fei Long. I was thinking about learning Zangief or Boxer, but I’d rather learn Zangief so I can get a feel of grappler characters for when super comes out (T HAWK!).

I know Fei Long is pretty hard to play execution-wise, as some of his more important and damaging combos are 1 frame links, or not much better.

I was looking at the strategy threads, and it had a bunch of option selects and character specific stuff, and it kind of surpised me, because I thought Zangief would be much simpler, like SPDs and Lariats haha.

Where do you start learning Zangief? What are the basic things you need to start learning, and where do you go from there?

hey what about that jump-cancel lariat thing? Would that beat out that akuma o-s?

Correct me if you disagree, but I think the first thing to beat into your skull if your serious about Gief - Is to understand that while Gief can do nasty damage with the SPD and has a high priority move with his lariat, the majority of your game plan is using the FEAR of these moves to create damage?so in short you should be focused on pokes and setups, it?s no different than Ryu IMO. Ryu basics beyond execution, is learning how to take advantage of those moves, hmm fireballs control space, they try and maneuver around that via ? say jumping, so you learn the counters to that, and viola you?ve put together a base gameplan.

With Gief its no different, you learn his special moves (360K, SPD, EX SPD, Lariat, C.Lariat), and you practice setting people up for those moves. It starts simple and then leads to more complex maneuvers and mind games. If you dominate someone with a ground game (to continue the Ryu metaphor fireball == Gief?s s.mp and s.rh), they?ll ?possibly? jump at you as the next option, which leads to a c.lariat. This gives you a new advantage of them being knocked down and being able to initiate the skull fucking wake-up game options (read all the o-s stuff UD has put together).

So learn the pokes (s.mp) learn the BnBs, learn c.lariat, then start thinking about ticking/baiting/O-Sing.

Alright I get it. It sounds so easy if you think about it like that. Just hit them while they run away, try and knock them down, mix them up, and hurt them if they let you get close. I already got the bnb pretty decent, now I guess I’ll figure out his anti-airs and some mix ups. I have a lot to learn. Thanks.

Just reading the rog match-up on the first page but u can AA lariet jumpin hk from rog.
The good rogs seem to just sweep and the light straight jab for chip from a range that u can’t punish with anything. Anyone have any new tricks on getting that life lead.

Just wanted to point out that your explanation was excellent. Sometimes you have good players that can’t explain worth a damn, and sometimes you have scrubs that write novels. Your explanation was spot on and you’re not a scrub good shit
