Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

If u crouch ppp when at the in close range after he throws the round house it trades and scores the knockdown. Very risky! But I use it works on rh spammers.

The best was this shit head that said he would beat me with 1 button. After I kicked his ass in the first round with him trying to spam s.HK, he dropped… Worst Sagat ever.

You have to get in close…if your in close then you’ve solved more than half of the Sagat problem, his only option at that point is really jab TU/FADC againat the Gief mixup game (I take that back he can also TK away too…ass clown)

I dunno I’ve just been thinking of the prospect of firing of s.mp and/or s.jab while walking in on Sagat to try and snuff his st.hk. I just don’t ironically, fight enough have decent Sagats. He’s my only friend who actually plays him, and online 95% of the Sagats you come across only win ‘because’ tey are Sagat, not because they are good with Sagat (akin to lariat spammers hehe)

Another very unsafe but effective trick If they are just spamming rh and are a scrub try jumping in with hard punch trades about even with the rh most the time if the spacing is right. Build your ex doing this 3 or 4 times then exgh for the knock down. This only works on scrubs that us RH as anti air instead of dp or knees. Do not do this when they have the ultra.

Sagat can beat you clear out the air with st.rh. He doens’t need to use specials for effective AA…and honestly, even trading doesn’t quite come out in your favor. You build EX…so does he. Fine lets say those attributes cancel or that our EX is more valuable than his (some truth in that from a propty stand point). On the flipside you just lost a quarter of your health…and are still full screen away…I know I tried something akin to just trading against his Sagat a month ago. Sagat just has too much health and dos too uch damage for it to work in your favor like other matchups. Just don’t jump, or when you do, make it a short jump…I had like a 80% bait rate using short jumps lol…mroe experienced Sagats againsat Gief’s wont have such a hih percentage, but its still better than catching the s.rh.

Hmm…so uhm…has anyone found a use for st.FP?

  • :bluu:

Mabey it will be good vs Juri. Punch that lil ho in the face. Get that TKD shit outta here.

Have you seen the SF Collab project on NewGrounds? If not, I recommend you go do that NOW. If so, I’m picturing Juri being the new ‘sakura’…between the Gief ‘rape’ and the ‘pick-up line that always works’…yeah…she’s the new target.

But sadly, my Gief days will come to a close as Dee Jay is on the way

That shoudl actually 'in theory be a tough match up for Gief, though I guess on knockdown Gief gets Dee Jay for free.

I have good luck with st.mp, st.hk against saggot s.hk after a whiff, but also sometimes a lariat when you are inside his range because it often trades with st.hk and beats his other normals. My favorite though is the st.hk option because it does heavy damage and moves you in too. Also though really important to know about is if you are in the range where you will get hit by st.hk while crouching, then c.lk beats it if saggot goes for it so it should be your main attack at that range when you are both at neutral advantage and neither person wants to make a first move, buffered into ex greenhands of course.

Only use i have found for st.hp isn’t a good one but it looks “sort of” like the beginning of a lariat spin when gief throws that big haymaker, which might bait someone who is triggerhappy on their lariat counter.

Maybe Deejay will have the same weakness as in ST of having his upkicks be duckable, so you can pressure him freely with crushing jabs unless he has meter.

Off Subject.

Have you read about the new grappler? I’m guessing he will be similar to Darun from the EX series. Would be real interesting to see how Gief matches up against another grappler. Though, Darun was similar to Raiden IMO. Gief definitley wins that matchup.

I’ll propably play Gief alot less once Cody is released. If cody can slash as fast as he could in Alpha it will completley stuff any focus attacks and if I can remember, knife throw beats lairat for free. Cody will be beast.

Though I think he will go about 6-4 in Giefs favor.

Im glad for this Variety of new characters, it will spread out the type of SF players greatly. And 2 Boxers? Never has capcom represented us (black america) with this many characters in one game ever. Dee Jay- Balrog- Dudley, wow! None of them throw basketballs!

LMAO at “none of them throw basketballs”…I never understood Cody in A3, but honestly I never looked at high level play. I did the ‘custom build’ thingy on my PSX…and it destroyed what I viewed of the game to the point that…uhm…yeah…I have NO clue how to play A3. I just liked Honda shrug.

And I view Gief verse another grappler, the same as Gief verse Gief. You beat them with normals at least I do…so unless the Duran wannabe and THawk have awesome normals, I don’t see either beating Gief.

So regarding s.FP, one thing that’s nice is that it moves you forward a bit after you throw it. You can use this property to add to gief’s long list of grab set-ups. Throw the s.FP just outside of your s.MP range (or s.MK range, for that matter) and buffer the 720 as you do it, the s.FP will whiff and the extra step will put you just inside your range for an ultra. Hit that PPP for mother russia!

Edit-- Two possibilities for using this set-up come to mind:

  1. Poke wars. After poking with s.MP’s in and out of its max range, toss out the s.FP to get within grabbing distance
  2. Closing the gap after you mess-up your BnB. In the event you time your greenhand too early during the c.lk xx ex-gh at the end of zangief’s BnB (i know it happens to me), you can toss the s.FP to close distance.

In the latter case, since your fingers are already poised above the punch buttons from trying to execute your ex-gh, its a quicker option than your other gap-closing normals, which are all located on the kick buttons.

Actually, it’s not.

Stand HP is actually SLOWER than stand HK.

SLOWER.

Stand HP- 12 frames startup 3 active 18 recovery.
Stand HK 11 frame startup 4 active 16 recovery.

Also, Stand HK is one frame safer.

Which still leaves us at its end …no use for s.FP.

a question to the good gief players that knows your matchups!
im a rufus player myself and know the gief matchup quite well, i still want a backup character to more “counter” gief if i have to in a tournament if rufus isnt doing it for me…

ive heared Seth is the absolute hardest for gief? then Sagat… who else? im thinking of maybe Akuma and Balrog should be a good counter? haalp plx! ^^ except for Seth and Sagat, what 2-3 chars do you really think is a pain in the ass when a good player is playing the character?

the best Gief counter is easily C Viper =P

Anyone who’s certifiable top-tier short of Ryu is a counter…so Seth/Sagat/Akuma or his hard counters.

  • :bluu:

C viper might be a higher teir at an elite level of play. But I would say take 2 players who are good but still make a mistake here or there and gief is 7-3 vs viper. kkk lariat beats the ground smash thing and PPP lariat beats the flame kick. Then mix in ex green hand, cross up, life lead and damage advatage and u should have an easy win.

Now elf that’s a bad matchup. Hard to pop up and u can’t cross him up once he has ultra. Also lariat is almost wothless vs him.

other than seth and sagat i’d say akuma and chun for me at least. lately i’ve faced solid chuns online and they’re pretty tough. i just couldn’t really get in on them and it felt like every move she has was made to stop gief if that makes sense to anybody? akuma is the fight i detest the most cause it’s just always the same thing. chase, chase, and chase. it’s just a boring-ass fight imo. bottomline is any character is a bad matchup if the player has skills.

Fuerte is not a bad matchup. I have a feeling you just don’t know it very well. Can’t be winning them all with larait spam…

Who can u beat with lariat spam? If the match up is easy don’t just say it’s easy explain why it’s easy. That way u don’t come off like " oh u have trouble with elf, I don’t" that doesn’t help anyone. If u got tips share them.
