Actually, I punished the hell out of a claw who was wall jumping a lot simply by doing headbutts. The second I saw him charge for the wall jump, I preempted it with a jumping headbutt. The idiot did it twice in a row and was dazed. After that, he had about 1/3 of his life left. Just gotta watch out for the EX.
So I was watching Maj’s video (found in this post). We all know that SPD has excellent range, but there one point in the vid where Gief caught Sim with a SPD from across the screen. That got me wondering…
Which opponent actions/moves extend the reach of Gief’s throws?
The only ones I know of are hadokens, and blanka balls during initial launch (this isn’t really extending the reach, but the grounded hitbox is something that isn’t visually obvious).
Can’t Claw do the izuna drop on you if you try to headbutt him out of the air?
You have to do it early. I think the hitbox extend far enough to where he can’t grab you out of it. I’m not 100% positive though so perhaps some one can verify?
From my experience and my own tests with my brother in training, Izuna beats headbutt. Which makes sense because Izuna generally beats all normals in the air. It seems to be like SPD on the ground, where attacking extends the grab range of izuna.
Speaking of headbutt, the headbutt stuns Seth in one hit if it’s done as a counter hit.
!!!
Back in the good old SF2 Turbo days, you can daze people with 1 headbutt. You also didn’t whiff if you weren’t in range for the SPD. Those were the good old days of Zangief.
Gief vs. Gief.
Is there ANYTHING safe to crossup with that doesn’t trade with the lariat ? Is there a way to time the knees so that it’s safe ?
Also, after landing a headbutt + combo vs. gief, what’s the best way to try to dizzy him. I can never seem to get them to dizzy after that.
- There’s already several posts on gief vs gief. look it up
- Why do you want to dizzy him? He has the highest stamina for dizzy
- Why are you crossing him up? You shouldn’t be that close for the most part
Actually, I put the gief gief section in the wiki, and that particular question was not addressed. So, don’t get all snarky on Temujin about searching, he’s been in the community for ages. Usually played a ton of Sakura in A3 though, not gief.
You do have a point about not wanting to cross gief up.
And no, as far as I can tell, every cross up attempt trades with crouch lariat. Then you eat EX hand, and you lose the damage trade horribly.
On wake up, don’t try to cross gief up. Just know this
Meaty Jab SPD beats everything gief does except dash back/jump. Including lariat/EX SPD/Ultra.
Gief has various options that will beat dash back or jump.
As far as stun combos. Two Fierce headbutts will do it, I stun giefs all the time b/c the move is so godly in the matchup.
Gief’s best stun combo is headbutt stand MP-> fierce glove.
This does 860 stun. Stuns akuma outright. Counter hit headbutt does 750 stun and this combo will stun 1000 characters outright
However the fierce glove is unsafe, so mix it up with focus attack cancelling (attack, backdash, forward dash)
Actually I was playing CB today and I saw meaty crossup d+lk snuff my lariat and I think I was doing the same to him.
Plus it was mentioned and I saw it today that splash beats lariat if you hit him right on top of his head.
Renegade, you know that low short hit confirm buffer to ex-hand trick… there’s a problem… it also comes out when you don’t want it to when they block.
Try this one out kids : whiff stand strong -> jab spd, range is super tight.
So which matchups are essential to learn for tournament zangief ?
I’m guessing Sagat, Ryu, Zangief, Chun-li, Rufus, Akuma, C.Viper, Honda, Blanka
I think you might wanna throw Dictators in there as well. I have had a horrible time against some really good Dictators.
Attacks can beat lariat at the top of his head, sure, but the gief is just doing lariat wrong. He should just crouch, and then lariat to trade w/ splash everytime.
I’d have to see about knees though. But I don’t think crossing up gief is very effective. Cross up to block string and get thrown? Etc Etc
About the buffering trick, you basically have to do it at ranges where the move will whiff normally, but if they attack, it will hit them out of it. Kinda like Chun in 3S buffering her super from half screen after pokes with c.mk or B+HP. Worked really well against Urien and Necro.
C.Viper, Fuerte, Honda, Sim, Guile, Vega, Ken and the console characters are fairly rare. Sim and Honda are important to know though.
Sagat, Blanka, and Akuma are your worst matchups. Learning them really helps.
Rufus, Dictator, and Boxer are Common tourney characters that Zangief has the advantage. I think these are important too.
Ryu and Chun are even matches that will also pop up alot.
So… Pretty much your list minus C.Viper and Honda, add Boxer and Dictator.
Try this one out: harrass with footsies until the opponent just wants to crouch block, whiff standing jab with 360 buffered into it, take half a step forward, 360+ppp/p. Voila, two 360s done very close in time equals surprise ultra/super!
Talk about mind games :looney:
This is good shit!
Are there characters you should generally avoid doing cross-over shenanigans with?
I’ve noticed that it’s pretty much pointless on Ryu.
I only have one major problem…how do you deal with akuma’s air projectile…this thing is ruining my game + is it me or you can counter Balrog’s charge punches efficiently since he’s very far from you when he’s done o_0
What is it about the ex-SPD that people seem to use it as a meaty wakeup ?
Is there any advantage over regular jab spd or any particular wakeup moves it beats ?
I don’t know how many times I went for an ultra and the stupid ex-spd comes out, maybe it’s because I play with a pad.
