Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

posted my match video against Josh Ballard’s Seth in the video thread. check it out and help every gief player figure out how to beat SETH.

seth isn’t as hard as sagat. i’ll throw in one big tip that no one has mentioned. don’t crouch block. there is absolutely no reason to crouch block seth unless he wants to hit you with a low forward and that means he’s right next to you. that stretchy hands he does? that’s a st. fierce that hits mid, not low.

i watch a lot of your videos and see your bulldogging attempts fail because you get pushed back by the sonic boom then st. fierce. if you had stood up and blocked the boom, 50% of the time the st. fierce whiffs because crouching would have extended giefs hit box further out. this means you get to walk up some more and push him into the corner.

it’s been said plenty of times, but don’t jump at seth. only neutral jump for headbutts and for dodging sonic booms.

Hey guys, dont hate me, but I need serious help against zangief when using gouken.

I find it very hard to deal with him, specially when hes close, with cross-ups and empty cross-ups into throws.

Also, having to guess between an spd or st. lk xx green hand after a knockdown is a pain.

I know I have to keep him out but I have to do so all match, one mistake and the match is close to even again.

Can I have some pointers please? Its driving me mad.

Eh I’m having some difficulty against Ryu’s neutral jumping roundhouse to cr.mk > hadouken.

If I’m standing at a safe distance away from him, and he’s just throwing that out several times to keep me back, what are some options for punishing him or at least scaring him from doing it? EX Green hands on the way down?

If the Gief is predictable you can parry. otherwise I’d spam your hurricane kick, or do the EX dive kick to just ‘escape’.

For neutral jump shotos, space out like your going to do a EX GH and then time a s. RH. Go into training to practice. If the player is sloppy and your close, a c.lariat ‘can’ do the trick, more than often you’ll trade so make sure to follow up with ex GH.

why don’t you go into training mode, get ryu to jump up n down and do the kick all day. and try to beat that with every move gief got. do you need mama to hold your hands on every step you take?

way to be an asshole.

there are a couple of ways to handle this.

If you are close c.MP beats Jumping RH.
If you are far enough to have the Jumping RH miss your standing MK or MP beats his crouching MK.
If you block the c.mk you can EXGH or Lariat the fireball.
Or if the guy is spamming J RH a properly timed J MK will beat it on the way up, but this is much riskier.
hope that helps.

In addition, both MP and HP headbutts beat this depending on his jump timing.

Dang!

Yeah those are basically your options, although far standing roundhouse and standing jab are also important against the jumping roundhouse. I totally agree with zangief4life that duke should have just tested it out himself. That way he’d get a better understanding of his moves and of analyzing situations and how to apply his options to solving them.

So who’s like the ‘mod’ for this section? I’d be curious as to who dictates the setup of the character specific forums. I took most of the data I could from this thread for ‘character specific fighting’, and I can’t help but want to break it into individual threads ‘Shotos’ / ‘Grapplers’ / ‘Problem Match-ups’ …just because there is so much that is repeated even when its on the first friggin page of this thread. I understand folks not looking at the first page and zooming to the last page to ask their specific questions, but things like “getting in on Sagat” or “chun-li/Ryu jump kick AA” come up every page/other page.

As well I can’t fault the OP for the lack of updating the first page, there is just sooooo much info (especially regurgitated and refried). Hmm shrug don’t know what to do, we will continually have people reposting the same questions without it being condensed, but keeping it up to date wil lbe a problem…granted there aren’t that many innovations for Gief anymore. Thoughts on how to handle updating this thread/starting a new one?

And I hate Cammy…I just can’t consistently defend against her stupid hooligan throw. I can just sit there and force her to come to me…but then I catch that throw…I know its supposed to be in my favor, but I STRUGGLE with this match-up.

  • :bluu:

You can just cr.jab hooligan. If it’s EX, you can cr.mp.

cr.MP all them hooligans. Block if she slides. KKK Lairat if EX Hoolies behind you.

Thanks? Can anyone else help? Its crazy!

putting more thoughts into it, your in the ‘Gen’ situation, where you have no good wake up ‘attack’. The solution with ‘Gen’ and with Gouken is to do the EX dive kick…pretty sure of it. Do it on wake up to fl across the stage and reset Gief’s positioning.

  • :bluu:

Ex counter beats attacks, ex hurricane beats throws and grounded attacks, blocking beats attacks, ex demon flip beats throws, jumps beat throws, throws beat blocking, etc. Gouken’s wakeup is all about guessing games, but don’t feel bad. When most characters first wake up against Gief all they can do is block, but Gouken can still actually do things.

That’s basically what I said emmiright?

Anyways, thanks guys!

I have a question about Zangief’s jumping knees. What would be the best option to do if a person goes for a throw when they block it. Once I done it to a Zangief and he buffered a ultra when he blocked the knees and GG.

I found one of the best things to do to gouken on his wakeup is a meaty crouching roundhouse because it makes his ex hurricane kick whiff and if it is blocked since you are hitting with the later frames of the attack then you will be safe afterward and be able to go for spd or whatever. Also if they try to counter it they either have to do the low counter or ex counter, which you can use to mix them up later.

Gen I don’t know his ex walldive is like a teleport, best I have come up with is to greenhand after him to chase him. I haven’t played against gen much.

Don’t do jumping lights to a meatspinner. If you decide to jump at one then start with a fierce and then either jump right back out or do some crouching jabs before you jump out to avoid the incoming mashed lariat/grab. If you jump straight up then you can land some headbutts of which 2 of them will stun.

Just gonna add in. (Probably been mentioned before)

Gief’s PPP Lariat - Can disregard Gen’s Special and Ultra (236236P Notation) , It can also cancel Rog’s super. You take damage from the first hit, but eh, it happens.

Just the things I’ve noticed.

I’m having issue with a particular mechanic. jumping is supposedly unthrowable and back dashing is supposed to have some level of being unthrowable, yet I continually get thrown when I’m obviously ‘in the air’/leaving the ground, and against a EF this weekend I’d try to backdash on wake up and just got continually thrown when I did (yes I still won, thats not the question). so I’m just curious if anyone could go a little in depth as to what has to be done to successfully backdash/jump throw attempts.
