Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

haha i just got back from a tourney in Cincinatti. Took 2nd with gief. Unfortunately i had to play Josh Ballard aka Josh Da FunkDoc in the Winner’s final and grand final. Gief vs Seth. His seth made me really think it’s 9-1 instead of 7-3 as i previously thought. I did take a match from him and few rounds here and there. but damn. it’s tough.

videos of me playing him will be up soon.

Seth is allowed in tournaments?

Console tourneys seem to allow him. I mean, Evo had Arturo using Seth, right?

No he’s not

D/F RH will crush if you get the spacing right. Get it a couple times and you can start s. RH -> SPD stuff. Other option is to get the life lead early on and then he can’t turtle using it. I hate hte Bison match up but admit that if he has to come to you its in your advantage.

Hey all; I’m just here to let you know of a new training system myself and Illwill79 have divised.
In this training program, we have regular tournaments, a mIrc chat room, a dedicated sub-forum for feedback on matches and several players who record matches.

The training program is strictly for dedicated players. You dont have to be the best (though we do have several strong players) you just have to be dedicated.

If you would be interested in joining this new program, please see the OP of this thread :

Hope to see you…HERE!

If you know he is going to use s rh you can ex green hand and jumping mk work i think mp works too and jab spd not fully sure

If you KNOW he’s going to do it…like your fighting a s.rh spammer…just do headbutts. They’ll think the first one is a fluke and get stunned by the second one. Then grab the vaseline and proceed to rape him.

for bison s.rh, best would be c.lk ex green combo.
if you 623k>p+p, ex hand only come when lk hit /gard and not when it didnt hit at all.
this is useful against chunli also, but bison s.rh is harder to get for me. spacing and timing has to be right.
s.lp also works but sometimes you also get even or just lose depends on timing.
you can also buffer in ex hand but more difficult to keep ex hand not to come out when lp missed because u have to lp then ex hand instead and do this fast. but well worth mastering which i haven’t…
take a time against bison, i think thats pretty important as well for overall strategy.
and watch bison’s super meter to tell the difference between devil reverse and head stomp.
devil reverse don’t gain gauge until hands come out.

I did not know that. Thanks for the tip. I might have to keep an eye out for that one.

Yeah me neither. I like it.

Hi guys,

I’m fairly new to Street Fighter. Spent most of my time playing Tekken 6:BR. (Please forgive me). LOL. But I’m loving using Zangief atm. Unfortunately I’m having lots of difficulty shoto characters. Mostly Ken and Ryu. They keep doing FB’s and I use lariat againt them. But when I try to get in an jump over Fb they use dp, which makes my time very difficult. Any advice?

Never thought about it that way and its an awesome idea, I just question my reaction time heh

Edit - In regards to FBs…there are really two things to work on ‘right now’ for you. First off don’t lariat fireballs cause you can. You’ll get punished by people for it.

  1. learn how t SPACE jumping over fireballs…sometimes that means taking the chip from an extra fireball to land outside of normal DP distance (karaDP is another story)

  2. bulldog thnat piece…learn to just walk up and block, walk up and block.

would it be better to use the short version of jump (up,up/fwd)?

I ‘usually’ don’t. Its just a matter of spacing. As Gief I never try to jump-in on FB spammers…they are used to it and expecting it…so I try to land ‘outside’ of their most effective range when I do jump. From their Gief’s normals and EX GH make any fireballs they throw mute. As well that is a good range to counter with lariat (as opposed to full screen)…granted I don’t really do that…I only lariat on jump-ins and rolls heh. Just learn Gief’s jump distance and walk speed…then bully your way in. The clock is LONG and your stamina is HIGH, so you can take the chip and take your time. Once you get in, you usually do so much dmg that FB spam won’t win them the match so they have to come to you.

Call me blind, but I dont see a strat on here for seth and combing through the 25 pages is burning my faceballs O.O

What are good ways to get inside on seth?
Best method for countering his jumping stretch arms?

What do you have to be careful about when on the inside?
being counter spd’d? teleport? wall-jump?

We discussed Seth already, there are two ways to fight him.

Quit to XBL…

Or literally kick the guy playing as him…

That fight is horrible. My honda can’t do anything either.

^Cosign.

You are pretty much screwed if the Seth player knows the matchup even a little bit. Pray he messes up and you dizzy him. Try to land some headbutts…remember, like dhalsim, you can hit his arms. Gief’s hands durring lairat counter arms and neutral headbutt can beat his stretchy arms…put him in a stun with 1 hit.

dont use vaseline use curd soap!!

Am I the only one that gets the anime ‘rape face’ going IRL off a stun. I really get excited when I catch someone hehe.
