Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

I just tried pretty much every move in gief’s arsenal against Blanka’s ultra. You can always trade with it with lariat whether you block the first hit or are just outside of the first hit’s range but not far enough to avoid the ball on its way down. If the first hit doesn’t connect, you can trade with cr.mp. The timing is a little less strict than lariat but you don’t do as much damage. Other than that, there doesn’t seem to be too much of any other solution. Jumping back doesn’t work, back dash doesn’t work. So either block it or trade with lariat. When you trade though, the damage is almost equal to the chip damage. So as I have said before, if you have the health, then just take the chip damage so you can punish afterwards. If you don’t have the health, and they don’t have much health, you can pray for the double KO and trade with lariat. Other than that, you’re pretty much SOL.

Almost equal, yes, but it is less, but you are correct in that if you don’t have enough life to block it all you might as well trade and hope for a double K.O if blanka hasnt got much life.

Just wondering though, if blanka ultras right in your face so you are right next to each other and you were moving forwards, is there anything you can do or just eat it?

As long as you’re not in the middle of a move or throwing out a move, you can block it. I bait a lot of ultras from Blankas just by walking near them back and forth on their wake up.

with honda just turtle when he does his headbutt and you block it, you can do a green hand reversal he cant block…

Yes, but most decent hondas won’t simply just try and headbutt you from full screen away.

Besides, one blocked headbutt at the start of the round and you’ll have to come after him.

Not a lot. I’ve been too busy the last few years to really play anything competitively anymore. I play a little here and there just for fun.

when i said turtle i dont mean the whole match, im just saying its not Tom and Jerry anymore because of the reversal… yet for some reason u figure out the most insane circumstances when someone would turtle just to disagree with somebody posting a completely good tip.

Yea, please reset this thread :pray:. It’s way outdated and we’re at the point where match-ups are getting tighter and we could use all the info we’ve got to stay on top.

Also on Honda, how do you guys approach the mix-up game on him? Without meter it’s relatively straitforward, but when he’s got meter EX-buttslam counters and makes it risky. Do you not cross-up, or try to bait the slam perhaps?

if you know that honda is gonna ex butt, just block and spd or ultra.

pretty much everything else on honda’s getup, you can beat with lariat.
i don’t really see much advantage on crossing up, unless you have punished him enough on getup that he is just blocking or trying to jump/dash away.

vertical jump right next to honda is also works, i think it will pass the butt and head, relatively safe option i think.
vertical jump as fake jump in works to make honda use up his ex gauge by ex head also from mid distance.

honda’s vertical jump hp can be beat with standing HK, has to do it early on honda’s jump tho. if he is already at highest point, its too late. and if he is too close, u just have to block it, or cr mk to pass and spd on landing.

just don’t keep doing same thing over and over, gotto mix up and do so accordingly to your opponent.

for blanka’s ultra…if you are a little far away, you can c.mp when he first jump…well timed c.mp beats the ultra cleanly.

blanka’s ultra is always on their getup, so if blanka got ultra gauge, i just cross over and after landing, i just do ex gh as blanka comes down.
unless ofcourse i have my ultra gauge, i block it and do my ultra.

but i hate those moments when i don’t have enough life left to full block the blanka’s ultra, and blanka does it on my getup. no escape…

also guys for blanka if you do get the jump over while he does his ultra do a banashing flat asap to hit slap him out of it

What do you do against a bison and seth that teleports on wakeup when they aren’t in the corner.

Hrk seems the only thing I can catch them with is slap when they are fully standing and then spd. Only PPP works if seth teleports behind me.

or is it much easier to punish Blanka’s electricity with a buffered st.lk EX GH than just a normal st.lk?

Cr.HK is even easier. Been in use by all characters since ''91.
