Zangief Strategy/Match-up Thread

You have some options:
1:If the seth player is next to you, throw your controller at them. A stick has more mass and is even better.
2:If the seth player is online and it isn’t championship mode, leave the game
3:If it IS championship mode, play it like you would against dhalsim and hope he sucks.

I would place it 9-1 in Seth’s favor. It’s not a balanced matchup at all.

Am I the only one who have problems with E.Honda?

The matchup is supposedly 5-5, but man I’m just not feeling it. Honda is worse than Blanka in some ways. Sumo headbutt is like, worse than ball, as it seems even faster and safer after block. Honda’s neutral jump HP (he can even pilot it a little in the air) and his standing HP/HK both have great priority and makes approaching him difficult, either by jumping or ground footsy.

When I try to approach from the ground with jabs/crouching LK and standing MP/MK, Honda’s HP/HK stuffs me more often than not. Trying to use Gief’s standing HK to beat Honda’s neutral jump HP is also tough, due to him being able to move a little in the air and it often beat or trades with me. It beats the air attacks I tried. The only option I got left is trying to EX Green hand as he lands but I don’t always have meter.

And the only time I can use Lariat is far away, hoping a psychic KKK Lariat might beat a Sumo headbutt (PPP Lariat is too easily punishable). Funny, it’s kind of like fighting Blanka.

From certain distances, the Sumo buttslam (especially EX) acts just like Boxer’s headbutt and beats all air attacks. It (EX) also seems to get him out of wakeup cross up attempts for free like Blanka. Occasionally it’s also useful as a crossup.

I’m kind of at a loss here, I have no idea how to approach this battle. If the Honda is a good defensive player I pretty much can’t do crap while he chip me all day (again, kind of like Blanka). I tried to look for pro replays to get some insight, but most pro Zangiefs LOSE to Hondas in those replays! It’s actually kind of painful to watch, and I can literally feel the frustration in those videos. So many of those Zangiefs had to gamble on Ultra connecting, and it’s just not a reliable strategy.

So, anyone here with any insight to things that could help this match?

The only thing I can tell you vs. seth is that if you do walk him into the corner and he tries to wall jump past you, do the vertical jump dizzy headbutt. It stuns him in one hit on counterhit. Try to randomly lariat his jump back fierce. Be ready for his teleport on wakeup or when cornered. The match isn’t 9-1 only because of the gigantic damage imbalance, and thank god for that. 7-3 sounds about right to me. If you can trade with a couple jump fierces with lariats or headbutt him once then you can get a pretty chunky lead and then just sit there and force him to play the game.

Ehonda is a bitch but its fair you can play groundgame against him and a blocked ex butslamm is highly punishable with ultra… besides no pro play gief at the moment it seems no good matchups for month now… but honda is annoing like boxer… if they turtel you need to be patien and reakt something i can not play…

I don’t even bother pressing rh in the air with Gief…like ever. When it comes to fighting Sagat’s I have a MUCH higher success rate just spacing from far away and j.mk to snuff rh juggles…it worx…REAL well. I peaced out ryu then 3 straight sagat’s off that j.mk last nyte.

As for Honda, I got annihalted by one Honda a week ago…using one button basically (fierce). But for the most part, playing footsies and baiting punishable moves seems to be your best…safe jumps, vert jumps to bait buttslam, on knockdown try to bait buttslam by doing meaty too early to connect, but early enough to also BLOCK afterwards…basically you have to treat Honda like a DP happy Ken and bait/punish…at least for the ones I’ve fought.

Also after last night I dont’ really fear Blanka anymore…for some reason in Championship mode there are ALOT of Blanka’s running around and I had a real good percentage agaisnt them. Lost to some bad lag blocking on Ultra twice, outside of that, Blanka’s seem terribly easy to take apart at this point…well normal & scrubby ones. My new issue however is I’ve started fighting mroe and more Gief’s…and I HATE mirror matches…I have NO clue what to do against Gief…as Gief. I’m so accustom to being the aggressor, but the aggresor seems to lose this fight.

Ok so the general strat. for shootos is to force them into the corner. Now that i’ve got him cornered now what? What do i do if they just keep doing jumping mk? I tried doing st. mp and sometimes it hits and sometimes it trades… i don’t know if trading is any good for me at this point since i would rarely have a life lead once they r conered. I also tried st. hk which is hard to time… and if i miss i get punished. And if i get close the mk tags me on the head and i get swept and they jump out and i start the chase all over again.

lariate seems to get stuffed by jumping mk at certain distances for me… is it always suppose to trade if i time it perfectly?? Also sometimes i can spd after a blocked jump mk sometimes i can’t… like i would buff a spd during the blocked jp. mk sometimes i would land it and sometimes i would just block and eat a sweep. Is it a timing thing? or a distance thing… i’ve tried testing it in training and the results are inconclusive.

And as for mirror matches… all i do is zone with st. mp and st. hk. Its a retarded fight. Bait a mistake to land a jab spd. Don’t use GH or ex. GH or u’ll pay for it.

Ever since CE, Ryu’s have become a real pain. Basically all of the reasons you’ve just stated. I have to be very patient and just try to walk them into the corner. But I think I have a plan for countering their neutral jump mk into sweep. If I see that they’re sweep happy, I think I’m going to start to try to bait it and back dash into s.mk or a jab SPD. Also FA dash forward into SPD might work. I still need practice on the timing of that. It’s a little risky I feel because gief FADC so freaking slow. Also, his FA doesn’t hit crouching shotos. I hate that. I guess I just need more practice on that. I also have to remember to try to catch them with EX GH in the air when they do their neutral jumps. I think that might work as well. And DO NOT JUMP WHEN THEY HAVE ULTRA. I do that shit by accident all the freaking time and end up eating jab SRK into Ultra.

Yea ever since CE all i play are Ryu’s and Sagats. Everytime i lose to that same strat… they just run away to the corner and just do back jump mk all day. I’ve tried FADC … i would focus the jp. mk but eat the sweep. Jp forward hp seems to stuff jump mk with the right timing. The only time I win is when i am EXTRA patient and i time EVERYTHING perfectly. If i time all my st. hk and st. mp perfectly i would have a chance… while they can just mindlessly spam jumping mk all day to stuff me if i mis-timed.

And wow i never knew honda was so tuff untill i got perfected by one last night lol! I had no clue how to fight one cus i don’t usually see much hondas around.

I had a Ryu try that shit on me…poor guy.

 1. EX GH
 2. Werll timed ‘early’ FA (like while in the air), you aren’t trying to combo so much as score a knockdown
 3. Take a step back and time a better jump attack that kills his angle. Risky though against a smart/good Ryu.
 4. Well timed GH into crouching lariat (you want to get under him basically). I’ve onyl done it succssfully once., but I know it works…just requires some practice to time right.

Usually though I’ll just walk under him and eat the j.mk if it means iLariat xx EX GH. I’ll do more dmg, take less dmg, and score the knockdown which is good for Gief in all flavors wether its risky cross up on shoto, or bait/punish.

I play Honda justl ike blanka…footsy and bait. Don’t get knockdown though. Blanka has some tricks on knockdown, but Honda does DMG on knockdown. Don’t try boguarding yoru way in either, just bulldog yourself closer. Honda has no way of getting out the corner without risking an SPD oppurtunity like Blnaka does with Rainbow roll.

Championship mode needs to be renamed to “fight sagat”

fucking christ I know that I need practice at this matchup, else I wouldn’t lose to the retardedness of S.RH and F+S.RH combined with a fuckload of tiger shots, but this is intensely annoying.

It’s hard to get into range with long crouching roundhouse and anything else I try makes me eat a fuckload of tiger shots…blegh

I’ve actually fought more Ryus than Sagats. I actually fought 2 sims yesterday. I learned the hard way that I cannot EX GH through his ultra from half a screen away… What the hell was I thinking!!! Also, if Ryu does his ultra right after you EX GH, YOU WILL LOSE! I think he has invincibility frames on his ultra startup. I thought I won the match too because I was trying to chip him to death and he had no health… Another hard lesson learned.

Always Lairat VS Ryu’s ultra and punish him.

And yes…fight sagat. I understand all the junk about it but it is a little annoying to always chase sagat. Even if I win im still bothered that I had to chase him around for so long and him playing like a chump.

The only reason I didn’t lariat was because I was trying to chip him to death. I guess I was just unlucky that he ultraed the split second after I EX GHed… I thought I had him beat. But I was wrong.

Lesson for the day: Dhalsim blocking a lariat will push you back into his ultra X_X

Championship mode = chase after everyone.

Sagat = obvious chase. Into the corner. He gets lucky and gets out. Tiger shot all the way to the other corner, repeat until one is dead (usually him).
Ryu = hadoken until you get close, hurricane kick across the top of the screen and repeat >_<
Blanka = well no surprises here.
Boxer = pretty much the definition of a turtle. Wait, might have to contend against Sagat first.
Akuma = aggressive Akuma? In CE? Against Zangief? Must be an urban legend.

I think they need to rename CE “turtle edition”. Extremely annoying to fight just about everyone. No one wants to take any risks and the games can get EXTREMELY boring. I was fighting a half decent Ryu (who could combo his super/Ultra pretty well) and even he was doing that Hadoken/Hurricane kick nonsense!

Turtle boxers are a pain but I think it’s funny to fight against them. I love SF4 because a lot of time it becomes a mind game.

can someone explain what’s going on in this video for gief

iam it looks like fadc but it’s not … i tried it but i was wondering like in thirdstrike if you parry an attack you have a small window to do your super motion … i was wonder if in street fighter 4 if you do a ex move and once the first move hit it has the same properties has the parry super motion in thirdstrike?

Thats the ex bear grab cancel into ultra. It looks like a focus but its not. ex bear to absorb a hit then ultra.

Anyone have an answer for this?

Man i can’t beat my buddy’s ryu anymore… he smacked me 10 games in a row. Back then i would bait him to srk me and i would spd him but now he doesn’t do srk anymore. He would just mk to FB all day. We would play footies for a while then he would just jump at me with the mk, most of the time it would hit me if i tried to lariate. And when i knock him down he would quick stand and do straight jump mk… when i try to counter with headbutt he would throw me. When i try splash he would back dash… I play him alot but now it seems like he knows exactly what i am going to do. Its like he’s conditioned me not to do cross ups on his wake up anymore. Now he’s getting brave and goes on the attack and starts pushing ME back into the corner.
