I dunno. Maybe you’re not playing Blankas that really know that matchup. Because if you did, that would rarely if ever happen. It’s a matchup thing.
I wanna test my Blanka knowledge against you 10KV.
I’ll add you, lets play first to 10
No problem. I am always good with some friendly sparring. I will test your knowledge as best I can. Hopefully I can make you a better player.
LOL, finally bro! I guess from now on it’s time to take that Gief of yours seriously!
LOL yeah. It’s all thanks to your Splash-happy Honda. No other Honda player would spam the Sumo Splash enough times so that I could learn the timing. Now all I got to worry about is Torpedoes, Slaps, sweeps, NE Oichios, etc, etc,
FUUUUUUUUUU****
A lil late, but nice work with Gief Snake. I love what you did with the place :-p
So I have a question that I can’t seem to figure out.
I don’t know if its just me but when I try a standing far short into jab SPD, it works fine. When I try and change up the strength of my SPD using the EXACT same timing I will miss the throw and just whiff. I have to slow down my SPD to make it connect and to me its not as accurate as the jab, which I’d say I can hit very very accurately.
Now I looked at the frame data through NKI’s website and it seems, if I’m reading it right, the start-up frames and attack frames are all identical. The only difference is I’m assuming WHIFF frames?? 22, 24 and 26 in strength order.
For this reason I’m always using JAB SPD’s in most of my tick attempts. A few different setups I can piano for more accuracy and may get another strength throw. But in this type of setup I cannot reliably piano the inputs, single is best.
So what am I doing wrong here? Why isn’t the timing exactly the same? I could kill opponents a lot faster with the higher strength SPD’s hitting.
Thanks
Obviously using jab instead of strong or fierce is mechanically different. Does it still happen if you remap the buttons in training mode?
I seem to be seeing slight 1 frame discrepancies in timing for all strengths, but the timing is the same otherwise.
I haven’t tried remapping yet. But to be specific on how I tested I used training mode and set opponent to Jump. Stand short on opponents landing into the SPD attempts. I’ll try more when I’m back home. …at work right now XD.
Seems I figured my problem out.
I remapped keys and yeah strong and fierce weren’t working very well for me. Not consistent at all! I’m figuring it’s the way I’m doing my SPD. As you know, there are tons of ways to do SPDs. I was doing it this way.
Far standing short then forward, down, back, forward punch.
This way jab is simple as pie but other strengths were just not the same!
Now I tried this…
Far standing short then forward, down, back, UP then punch.
Viola. All strengths work fine with the same timing.
Now to mess with my ducking jabs into SPD as I do that in the ST fashion. Down+Back jab then 360 ending back at down back + jab. This also gives me the same hassles with different strength SPDs.
Needs more activity here.
Evoanon, are you considered the best Z on Xbox live now? just curious . . . .
I would consider Snake Eyez and Evoanon the best Giefs online right now.
evoanon told me he hates zangief.
Is he living a lie?
Who are the best giefs on PSN?
Zangief31?
I don’t know if cluxdelux still plays but he is impressive.
Things that are keeping me from being a better Gief player:
[]I can almost never hit wake-up SPDs
[]I don’t do enough SPDs in general
[]I’m not very good at tick throwing
[]Still too much botched execution
My execution problems are mainly with SPD and especially RBG, which is not at all hard, but for some reason, when I start to panic, I rush it or something and just end up throwing out standing roundhouses. Also, any tips for wakeup SPDs? I try pianoing, but I almost never get them off.
Oh, and one more thing–the good players walk up to me when I’m knocked down, then make sure they’re in the air when I actually get up, I assume because they’re under the mistaken impression that I can hit wakeup SPDs at a better than 25% rate. Am I supposed to block and reversal SPD when they do that?
Matches that make me angry:
[]Claw
[]Dictator
I’m not sure which one I hate more. Claw is annoying because I know exactly what he’s going to do…cr.strong pokes, slides, rolls on knockdown, all of it safe on block. (am I right about that?) I just don’t have an answer for any of it. And Dictator…I hear that Gief is supposed to have the advantage, but good Dics still wreck me, and knowing I should be able to counter him makes it even more frustrating.
Shotos are my favorite to fight. Don’t get me wrong–a good player of any character will smoke me, but at least I feel like I know what the Shotos can do, and what my answers are. I feel like if I make the right choices and execute, I can win.
Hmm, I ended up writing more than I had planned to there. tl;dr: I need some SPD tips.
Wake-up SPD should be the easiest thing about Zangief. Just spin your controller around and mash all punches . Really though you could spin like crazy or do a controlled 270 motion and a well-timed piano input with all punches should make the wake-up SPD a breeze. Maybe play against CPU in training and let him knock you down and practice over and over to get a good handle on the timing. Personally I do a down-forward starting motion sliding into back then to up and punches. Any way should work though.
Tick throwing is all about timing also, try going into training mode and set CPU to “JUMP” and duck jab into SPD or stand far short into SPD. If CPU is able to jump out of it you’re SPD’ing too late or missing it if nothing comes out. If you whiff before he jumps, youre too fast. Find the timing that works for you. I do two different motions for both of these tick attempts, but I think I’m just weird. I stand far short + forward motion into a complete counter clockwise 360 into 1-punch (i don’t piano this). For the ducking jab I have a bad habit of doing down+forward jabs (1-4) then down, downback, back, forward 1-punch. When I try other motions they just dont work for me. I can swear the timing is different for the other motions and jab vs strong-fierce spd’s.
As for enemies jumping while close on wake-up its really just them assuming you’re going to do a wake-up 360 or attempt it, aka not be blocking while you wake. This opens you up for a jump into combo or whatever they please. If you think they’re going to do this you could just not do anything on wakeup and when they jump have them land on a lariat or jump attack them (neutral j.+Fierce is always nice)
When waking up close to gief its a coin toss on your options, just the same as if they’re waking up with you next to them. Block and let them do a reversal attack, and punish their mistake. Random # of blockstring into SPD. Random # of blockstring into NOTHING and punish their reversal. Be careful when you’re too close to some people on wake-up you may get thrown yourself even if trying a meaty attack.
:karate:
Send me a friend request and I’ll play some anti-gief on you with all characters, or whichever you please. I can give you tips on where you could punish and what mistakes you made.
Awesome, I’ve seen your Gief and I will absolutely take you up on that. My playtimes are somewhat unpredictable, but I’ll try to get on soon.
