I really wanted to say “Thankyou” for posting this video with such an apt voice over. I have never really gotten the point or use of option selects until watching this video. If you don’t mind I will be posting some new videos of my tournament play this weekend and at the same time I’d like to link to your video in [URL=“http://www.youtube.com/user/XBLForgetfulness”[/media] as well.
The range isn’t great. And it’s a little difficult to pull of (aerial 720 is iffy imo)
You should be using your EX for greenhand. It gets a knockdown and sets up crossup/spd opportunities.
U1 is more versatile, though, because it takes off more than half health of the whole cast (except Gief and Hawk) and it’s simple to set up a standing 720. Good players most likely won’t get caught in U2 often.
I think everyone will have their own reasons; but for me it is a combination of: having spent months looking for U1 and devising setups for it, the damage and the oddities of U2 range wise. Feels really great when U2 connects, but it seems to have a shorter range than a lot of the situations where it might be really scary. On top of that, most better Gief’s know who they can/can’t safe-jump or which normal reversals can be gotten with normal punishes. U2 can still be a great threat
This depends on mostly the matchup, but sometimes it depends on the player also. For example, I like to switch between U1 and U2 for Honda, where I feel both Ultras are evenly effective, regardless of their damage output.
I also enjoy U2 for Honda. I cought a Honda with U2 off of a sumo slam 2 weeks ago at a local tourney. Goot times I think Ultra choice is something personal that you have to feel out. I wouldn’t hard lock a character into an Ultra setup. I would rather go based on that person’s play style with that character.
Hey guys! Thank you for all the help thus far. I’m a noob player that doesn’t play SSF4 in competitions but just likes to play online with my friends list. Anyways, I’ve been playing more of Gief lately just because I like the character concept and his punishing abilities. I was wondering if you all could help me focus on 2-3 things I should be doing for my Gief character in training mode or online. I realize there are probably 1,000 holes to fill in my gameplay but would rather take babysteps to get better. Thank you!
Yea PPP beats Cammy’s hooligan very consistently but because Guy and Akuma have ambiguous dive ins, i wouldn’t PPP on auto pilot. Akuma can very easily safe jump in with a Palm and punish you HARD. Guy’s typically fake you out and stop short. So crouch then react quick might be the best option 8/10 times.
Actually, if timed on gief’s wakeup, he gets thrown for free out of lariat by cammy and akuma for sure, not to mention akuma dive kick beats it clean into combo.
Also, crouching doesn’t beat hooligan in certain instances, b/c on the very first frame of waking up, you’re considered standing, so cammy can throw you. Jumping will get you grabbed, and backdashing is easily punishable by cammy on landing.
The only way to counter that is to wakeup with a crouching normal, but the timing is pretty difficult.
