Zangief Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Max frame advantage from a move, for most moves, = (total active frames - 1) + listed frame advantage.

Basically moves can hit meaty even if they’re not on wakeup because lots of moves extend their hitboxes outwards the farther into the move you get. Hence EX Psycho frame advantage from far away, but being extremely punishable up close.

You should be lariat’ing EX Psycho on reaction from far away anyway so it’s really not that big a deal. I mean, he glows purple and everything.

Alright, so I play 360 pad, and I use the analog stick. I think I’m pretty good with Zangief but one thing I’ve always struggled with is being able to do the cr.LK xx EX Hand option select. I use a customized button layout:

LB = KKK
LT = HK
RB = PPP
RT = HP

Whenever I want green hand what I do is dp+PPP(RB). This is generally the easiest way for me to do green hand, however I struggle with doing the aforementioned cr.LP/LK xx EX hand option select. I think I may be too accustomed to rapidly mashing dp and the PPP button whenever I land a light hit. This layout is otherwise essential to how I play the game and I don’t want to change it. Any tips on what I can do to land the option select more precisely?

F, D + LP or LK then press DF or F + PP and hold the PP

With how lenient the game engine is, you could get away with F, D + LP, PP (and hold it) instantly tap DF.

Notes: If your o/s poke trades, continue to hold PP, because EXSPD can come out often if you accidentally press up.

For cr.lk and st.lk o/s EXGH - you can use PPP (RB). However with cr.lp o/s EXGH - you can’t because the press of the PPP(RB), would be read as another chained lp and the EXGH won’t come out. On arcade sticks, people perform it with F, D + LP, DF MP+HP (Hold) to avoid the chaining lp issue.

So stick with cr.lk o/s EXGH and st.lk o/s EXGH unless you want to use MP+HP separately.

Can you OS lariat against Dictator’s EX Psycho crusher off a meaty?

Dude this helped me out so much. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Forgot to add:

You could use the shoryuken short-cut to do, cr.lk o/s EXGH. I’ve never done it this way, as I use a circle gate on the arcade stick.

Basically, this: Tap DF, DF, LK, PP (Hold)

Do I do the second DF at the same time as the LK?

Yes., DF > DF + LK > PPP or Forward > Down + LK > Down-Forward > PPP

I don’t know about pad tactics but I heartily recommend being able to fully buffer the EXGH into the animation of s.lp and s.lk as well as c.lp and c.lk. Each one has slightly hitboxes and will be useful where others will not. An example being Gief’s c.lp against Chun’s s.rh, out of the 4 light normals c.lp hitbox is the only one that can stuff her massive incredi-thighs and with OS it can help those situational matchups a lot.

I go

f,df,f +LK and PP at the same time. <-- thats for standing Light Kick
For whiffpunish I go LK + F,DF,F then PP.(this is more dangerous as an OS, I wont explain why, but sometimes EXhand can come out on whiff.) <— Then again s.lk isnt very usefull as stuffing anyway.

For crouching light kick and crouching light punch i go

f,df(+ either c.lk or c.lp),f + PP(with c.lp i do MP HP, with c.lk I dont know xD)

for s.lp I go

s.lp f,df,f + MP / HP

I have a lot of success with c.lk vs. Chun Lis thighs, it just depends on where she stands, which button I find more efficient out of c.lk and c.lp. Anyone else notice this?

Hmm, could be that I am just a scaredy cat and like the extra half step back that c.lp gives me against her and Sagat’s s.rh. I will try to man up and get a little closer lol.

Hey! Someone teach me c.lp os GH, I don’t know how to do it lol

You can but it won’t connect, Bison has too much Inv to hit with lariat, you can hit him out of the end of the crusher though.

Apparently you need to do the cr.LP on the forward or down input of the SRK motion, and then PP on the last input.

What are you having trouble with? It’s just like the s.lk OS but timing is a little different. Try using DF, DF instead of doing the whole DP motion, and make sure you are using MP+HP for the EX so you don’t get a mashed jab.

With Zangief, what’s DF, DF, lp get you? That’s right LP Banishing Flat A.K.A LP Green hand.

With using the PPP button, I think move priority dictates whether you get Ultra 1, EXSPD, EXGH, PPP Lariat, or crouching LP chain. But I think the priority would make it so that the LP chain never comes out, and you get EXGH.

Edit: Addtional thoughts

Here are theoretically other ways to do o/s cr.lp EXGH - would depend if your on pad, circle or square gate sticks.

DF+LP, DF+PP - squate gate, short cut - Maybe this is what you mean Grr? Probably is the fastest way to do it.
DF, D + LP, DF+PP - square gate, riding lower corner

Yes, chain has priority over any other option with PPP. You can test really easily with c.lp xx PPP xx c.lp. You will always get c.lp x 3 on block. same with chained c.lp with churning. You will never get super unless the chain “whiffs” because of inv or backdash etc. I only use PPP button for kara lariat so don’t know about lariat vs EXGH priority on 3p button press even with SRK directional inputs entered but I would assume lariat comes out. Can test later.

Also, I think Aquasilk is funnin’ on us lol.

Upping buffer speed on EXGH os’es takes away almost all of the situational inputs you guys are talking about. Just up the speed so you have an entire regular srk motion inside the animation for c.lp/s.lp/c.lk/s.lk. I do all the same:

  1. hit light attack (crouching or standing, lk or lp)
  2. fully buffer “regular” f,d,f + PP during animation
  3. ???
  4. profit, and return to neutral if poke whiffed

It sucks trying to do lp os EX Hand on pad lol

Very true, but you gotta be quick. I find I get EXGH to come out very often accidentally. But my execution isn’t world class either. :frowning:

Amen to that. But as an added BONUS. You can 720 with the analogue stick, accurately and super fast.

I really wish I could mod my arcade stick to include a thumb analogue, just for 720. But I don’t know if that’s cheating? I mean, where do you draw the line? 4 extra buttons? 3 extra directions? stick+analogue+hit box.

Why not? Like, if you have it they can just forbid you from using it and you still have a bogstandard stick. The downside would be having to practice two ways of doing 720s and being good with both. But hey, might as well try?
