There are a couple of answers to backdashing (Which is a very strong universal mechanic in SF4):
After a jumpin: You mean when you make them block a jump in attack like j. hp? The best answer is to just time your input after you land so you are putting the opponent in a true blockstring. This might be harder if you have never played a game like 3S or ST before SF4, but it is very doable. Sometimes this might not be possible, so you can either read the backdash and lp gh/sweep or against some characters I think you can forward dash and lp spd them.
On Wakeup: Do a safejump or a meaty setup that hits them on their first hittable frame on wakeup. Chances are they will simply block or get hit standing if they are mashing back to neutral.
During your blockstrings: Unfortunately, Gief has no actual true blockstrings outside of chained normals, but Gief’s cr. jab and cr. lk are both very good for punishing people for holding up and tick throws so work on that if people are backdashing out. If you are still having problems I’d say just OS sweep on every jab until they stop.
How to Jab OS Sweep properly: This is very easy assuming you are doing it correctly, you just press jab and then normally chain jabs while hitting sweep/longkick at the same time as every chained jab. Depending on the opponent’s backdash you will either have to do normal sweep or longkick (I think against like Chun Rose Cammy you might not get either lol). Against some people with terrible backdashes I think you can do st. jab OS st. hp for a knockdown.
If you straight out know when someone is going to backdash, you can always just green hand them for a knockdown. This is also pretty viable when EXGH beats some of their wakeup options. You can also Ultra 2 some wakeup backdashes really easily if you are in point blank range.
It’s pretty easy to fight someone who can only jump, block and reversal. But backdashing beats pokes and SPD. I gues i’ll just try to master OS sweep and do it as you say.
EDIT: I figured out why sweep OS wasn’t working for me before. I didn’t press my first Lp meaty enough on wake up. Although I understand it now, meaty Lp is still very difficult to time correctly.
You definitely poke people out of their backdashes. Again, if you are confident they are going to backdash just green hand them. You can also do neutral jump Headbutt OS EXGH (This is really good against chun).
Yes, it comes out as KKK lariat OS grab. It’s pretty specialized, but it’s good for some 50/50 situations like after EX Chicken Wing. Someone else posted this in one of the other threads.
Try whiffed splash, performed a bit higher up, so that it misses the opponent, but tricks Goukon into countering. Land and proceed with atomic suplex.
On his wake up, if your right near him, pause a little bit, start walking backwards then LP SPD. Your approach should be to wait and see, if he’s committed to an option, like neutral jump. Then punish or react to it.
Is there a difference in the first 2 unthrowable frames when gief wakes up from a hard knockdown or quick stand?
Something weird happened, I got SPDed out of my reversal spd on wake up.
hello i am a t-hawk player but i feel we are grappling kin, i have a question that i hope the zangief fans can answer how does optin select jab/block work.i thought it was an option select but i still semm to get hit out of it, please inform
Hi guys, I was messing around in training mode and I found a weird thing. If I do cLP sLP sMK I can combo, but if I do just sLP sMK I can’t. Why? sLP is +6 on hit and sMK starts in 7 frames, I shouldn’t be able to combo.
Close MK startup is 5 frames
Far MK startup is 7 frames
close LP is +2 on hit
far LP is +6 on hit
Not sure about the spacing of these, as I never use these combos. But you want the far LP to link into the close MK - which unless counter hit is turned, the only way to link them.
