Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

So the new official Zangief guide is out. Correct me if I’m wrong but crouch heavy punch does not CC.

How much invincibility would each shoryuken have? And is it hit or throw invincible? The Boscht Dynamite has 4 active frames, so once the invincibility on startup wears off on the shoryuken, its a matter of placing the move 3 frames before you get it, so Ryu flies into your grab area and gets planted into the ground. It would depend on whether Boscht Dynamite’s Attack boxes extend further than his hurt box. Otherwise he can never attack Ryu first.

Are you referring to this? They apparently rate Zangman as STRONG. V-Skill is difficult to use. They need to make the Flex come out ASAP when you press forward.

To all the people that are saying Gief is good or strong. Play him for a few days online or offline against good players who know what they’re doing and get back to me. I guarantee every single one of them will want to drop him like a bad habit.

I have since the game came out. He is not weak or strong, very mediocre.
Tools he has are good just no safe high damage pressure. He is all yomi, someone good at reading people like snake will make him look good. Other characters play sf Gief plays Rock Paper Scissors.

Well I meant non-Gief players tbh lol. I can’t stand people that don’t even play the character telling us how great he is.

Agreed. If I hear one more scrub say he is cheap I’ll scream. Always been that way for poor old Gief. People think because he has the best command throw and their precious down back can’t beat it, he is overpowered. Damn winers.

That’s really interesting. It does raises some questions.

  • How or when in the move do you get 2 hits of armor?
  • When in the game, would you need to use those 2 hits? Would have to be a lock situation, because they could simply evade to counter after the first hit and blow you up anyway.

Further testing anyone?

What gief needs is
SPD 3 frames
Ex SPD 4 frames, reduce the damage and make it hit invincible
Lariat 5 or even 6 frames and truly upper body invincible.

The disrespect to gief in sf5 is unreal.

LOL. SF4 Gief in an SF5 world, would be pretty cool. If only the tournaments could allow it!

Would’ve been awesome if they put in EX2 Zangief’s RBG where he runs at you like a football player.

"Hey Zangief is not the best character, please make him super OP, so I don’t habe to work anymore" Dude play another character.

Give him Lariat Buff/ EX Lariat so he can hit crouchers and extend the hitbox slightly so he can it confirm out of jab. that’s all he need. EX SPD is godlike, even with 5 frames, reducing the dmg would be a big nerf with THAT range. You just want to be braindead and mashing SPDs in blockstrings.

I would be okay making SPD a few frames faster so it can be used as a punish I do hate how you block moves that IMO should be punished only to eat dmg, because nope sorry not fast enough.

so far I’ve found myself having to mash super since it will stop the pressure I’ve attempted his V-reversal and either it doesn’t come out or it does and eeh it doesn’t discourage the opponent. I would have liked his V-reversal to be the atomic suplex similar to R. Mika and her Stunner.

I think Gief needs

3 frame cr lights
4 frame ST lights
5 frame cr mediums
6 frame st mediums
9 frame heavies
Spd throw invincible
Exspd hit invincible
Cr med punch special cancel
Lariat much bigger hit box, hit crouchers and out further.
Birdie walkspeed.

This would allow cr jab, cr med p, lariat as the go to poke combo.
On wake up we would still be free to pressure unless we had meter.

He could compete with anyone.

So you see everyone mashing DP during block strings? They can make it like the dps if you whiffs youll get crushcounter… i think we need that option.
And how those changes make him OP?
In sf4 he had hard times against a bunch of characters… but he had tools for all situations… making the right decision at the right time was the problem.

Give Zangief a teleport.

The struggle is so real with Gief.

But out of all the players I’ve seriously played in this game he is by far the most fun. Maybe I have some sick pleasure from the struggle of facing Chun.

While air spd dont has any invincible nature

Plus, with ONE more pre-jump frame, it makes our anti-jump strings much more effective. The threat of Headbutt and Standing HK if they try to jump away became a little bit stronger.
