Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

So I got EX SPD’d after my MUSCLE POWER animation, was the guy just super lucky?

EX SPD is supposedly grab invincible?

Didn’t really stop to consider that.

Ooooh that might very well be the case, I’ve completely neglected that fact. Cheers!

Another question, what do you even do against Vega’s EX bounce against wall dive move? Regular is punishable with lariat but the EX version seems to be invincible and I can’t dash to escape it. Is blocking the only option?

d.FP (the elbow). Beats it clean.

Has anybody beaten Hard survival. If so could you post pictures of the colors. I haven’t done so yet and I wanna know if it’s even worth it

Ahhh i see whats up now.

While ppp will hit crouching opponents, it doesnt “hit low”. It can be blocked in its entirety just by holding backwards even if you are right next to them. I guess that is what i heard ppl bitching about.

Question. Please let me know if i am misunderstanding anything about frame data here.

St MP is +3 on hit. That means they will be in hitstun for 3 frames after the 12 frame recovery time of the St MP. In essence they are in hitstun for 15 frames. So if you were able to buffer in a spd, and link it the frame after your recovery ends… The spd startup is 5 frames.

12+5 = 17

Therefore they have 2 frames before they get grabbed. But that is not enough time to jump or jab, right? So in essence, if you could get the timing PERFECT you could setup an inescapeable spd off a connected mp?

You gotta time it right cause stMP ain’t cancellable other than with v trgiger

If you canceled they would still be in hitstun, so the fact that you cant is almost an advantage. That 1 or 2 frames after they are out of hitstun would be your ONLY window to get them even if St MP had 0 recovery frames.

Not trying to be contrary, I just wanna make sure I understand all the nuances of this stuff even if its just theorycraft and not something I can actually pull off.

If I am misunderstanding please correct me

Thanks , too bad, all of the best colors were unlocked by normal, so I already have them

When comparing with other characters
Is gief being as the most low skilled and easy character for newbies?

lmao what? Zangief is a high skill-cap character in any way. Cammy and Birdie are the easiest.

Gief takes way more skill in this game, especially at high levels. If you don’t agree with that you either suck or play people that suck imo. Cammy, Ken, Rashid, and Bison are completely scrub friendly/braindead so far.

You forgot Nash.

There is no way Zangief is beginner friendly. I find him to be a slow, methodical character that requires great patience and understanding of space. Predicting and reading your opponent, recognizing their patterns is a must. You can’t win by rushing in and spamming moves with him like some other characters…

Incredibly proud of myself, finally reached Silver league with no rage quits! Considering this is the first Street Fighter where I’ve been determined at getting decent this is quite a lovely feat for me. ^.^

Good stuff. Keep up the good work and keep improving.

I dont agree with this at all, Nash is easily one of the more technical characters imo

Yeah I don’t think Nash is braindead but the mu’s annoying as fuck. I’m really having trouble with this one. This is way worse than Guile ever was in 4. I feel pretty helpless against a good Nash so far.

I agree, it’s definitely one of Gief’s worst imo. I play both characters and despite that I still can’t come up with a good anti Nash strat. He’s just so slippery, you can work all match backing him to the corner and then he escapes so easily
