A faster startup spd would lead to a lot of wakeup spds and spam spd on block reversals. As fun as that would be, it would be a massive gamebreaking advantage and I actually like this system a bit better of poking and footsie rather than all spd all game.
Rashid is all gimmicks. As long as him and Laura are in the game Gief will never be the worst for sure.
I think rashid actually has strong tools but right now people are falling for gimmicks so no reason for rashid players to level up. That will change soon.
I saw something on Twitter earlier today saying that if you hold down back with either the d pad or analog stick and then press forward then up on the other one, you can get a 2 frame spd. I’m going to mess around with this whenever I get home and see if it’s real, and how applicable it could be.
EDIT* I misread the tweet. You just get a 2 frame input for spd . Sorry
I think is Gief is actually alright in this game. Coming from ST and completely skipping IV, V seems to be bearable right out of the gate. IMO Gief requires more commitment to the grappler playstyle than in IV. At first I was very against them removing the green hand but he does have several options for fireball spam. Good blocking + patience are essential.
You are probably not using all Gief tools, the one thing that I felt the most for is tick throws like for example against Mika she will sLK then EX grab or sLP; I either get grabbed or get hit out of jump, if I try to back dash I get hit by sLK :perturbed:
I think the best move Zangief has right now is air SPD when we master this move we’ll be Godlike =)
This scrub right here agrees with this statement. People seem to be having a lot of trouble with jumpers, and this move not only destroys jumps but also gets in their head. It’s amazing. I’m going to spend a bunch of quality time with a jumping dummy tonight and try and get more of a grip on stuff.
I’ve gotten very good at going 412369 or 412368 and hitting the button immediately after the up input registers. I’m barely off the ground when I do the grab. I feel like if I program myself to do it on reaction to any neutral or forward jump it wins every time.
Best move is Standing HP IMO, it nullifies any attempt on jump ins and leads into SPD or knockdown. Ryu and Ken players get nervous and try stupid stuff to compensate at least on my level (scrub). Just stand there and eat fireballs with your mighty mohawk forehead and glorious muscles until they get impatient and try to make a move then stab them with your muscly fingers.
On a further note, delay the punch a little and let them block after the jump in then churn your muscly stick/pad and you will most likely hit with a CA since the range is a bit further than rubbing your nose into their bodies. It’s worked way too many times for me, not sure if they can jump out on it since they might be stunned for a few frames after the block? Someone with more frame data can probably prove me wrong but please confirm in that case.
Also quick question, if you suck someone in with V Trigger without them blocking, does that leave you at an advantage for an SPD or can they still jab you out of it?
EDIT: And another one, is there any difference between all of the running bear grabs aside from the EX having one hit of invincibility and strength depending on the button? Seems to be pointless to do a LK bear grab at all if there is no difference.
Hold it but not too long to give your opponent time to land, I think the armor ends right when Gief starts actually punching so just tapping it is a bad move. It can absorb one hit on his upper body so perfect for jump ins, it loses if the attack is a cross counter though.
On suction, no block, you are +3 so you won’t be jabbed out of a spd. They can however jump away or up and punish you. I believe though that CA is free at this point since that is 1f startup. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Difference in Bear grab is startup and damage, more of each with heavier buttons.
Zangief is the best, I wouldn’t even be interested in long term play without him, all the other characters are so boring to watch. Love watching Snake Eyez stream, go GIEF!!!
Also having a lotta trouble with that matchup. Sonic booms and max range light flash kicks seem to keep Gief out forever. I tried just about all of Gief’s tools to get around it and only had very limited success with v-skill and st.HP.
Jwong mentioned something interesting in his stream last night. Apparently if Gief catches your poke/whiff with v trigger and he doesn’t tap/hold the vaccum, you can leave your stick in neutral and have frame advantage, jabbing/beating anything Gief throws.
