Once people learn and figure stuff out it’s gonna get much worse for Gief imo. For example Snake Eyez is obviously ridiculous but he was getting away with so much crap at WNF’s and Undefeated. People are just scared and letting him do whatever he wants lol. That’s not gonna happen eventually.
One thing that helps incredibly I found is to use negative edge to do the CA after the cr.mp, so just hold the button after you do cr.mp, quickly do the 720, then release mp and it should come out and connect
I disagree as well. Zangief has incredibly solid normals and AA options. Soon as you walk them to the corner most of the cast is very limited in what they can do to get out.
The flow chart of Grapplers has always been straight forward. Grapplers are really strong at start of games because they always slow down game states so you really just see how people are with their characters. This is why T.Hawk was considered mid-tier at launch of Super. As the game progresses you started to see all of the really bad problems with T.Hawk and people started adapting. But this also showed that T.Hawk generally did not have the tools to keep up with the nonsense with for.

Geif not only has the tools to simplify game state and generall speaking, defenses were weaked on knockdown. So Zangief can knock people down and LET THEM get up without having to worry about something crazy coming out.
As the game progresses Geif is going to get more and more strongger because his ceiling is based on the player and not the character. If He did not have an Air grab, he’d be horrible. But the fact that he has access to so many Anti Air tools within his mixups, makes him very strong.
You still have to work. Like always. But if Geif corners you, especially later in the meta game, He will have the ability to not let the opponent out.
With that being said, as the meta game stands right now, Geif is in the top 50%

Here are my impression so far…
I feel Gief is very different in this game. They gave him a lot of new tools but took away his most advantages moves.
His SPD is too damn slow, you cant punish/reversal anyone when they rush you down. A simple jab or even a throw will beat him out all the time, its really dumb. So now you dont have to worry about them running away like you have aids the whole match, they have the option to rush you down too. Karin matchup is just gross to me. Anybody got videos or strats in fighting her?
His lariat got nerfed to even almost unusable. No longer its his best anti-air, it cant even hit crouching. No point of using it for projectiles when you have headbutt & v-skill. They should have added a 3kick option that goes faster like in Hyper Fighting while also hitting low.
I haven’t tried or even looked up other characters but does gief have any good matchups? Right now it seem like Cammy is favorable & even Laura. Ken, Ryu, & Mika are pretty close to even. The rest of the cast either havn’t played much or seem like a really uphill battle.
I’ll be having my first gathering this coming Friday, so ill know how he is offline. Right now he is really fun to use but i dont think he is that high up, i think at best low mid.
I think Karin-Zangief is in Zangief’s favour. Cr and standing jabs annihilate her. As for videos, look few posts up for Undefeated archive. (Gief-Karin Grand Finals).
Just checking, has anyone been able to consistently punish a baited DP with air spd on jump in? In the Day 1 Snake Eyes vid up there you see him try to go for it with EX Air SPD, but I think only regular works… If it’s even still a thing anymore, haha.
I tested this during the first beta Gief was available and by my knowledge It was never a thing. U could only beat DPs that were either out of range or out of their invincibility frames.
can anyone help me on this? It has been annoying the ever living hell out of me and I can’t figure out what’s going on. I just recorded myself super quick since it’s way easier than me trying to explain it through text.
Normally, you cant beat DP even when you guess they r going do it and do ex grap first.
So i suggest you to play ground with patience, move forward with F.HK and Vskill. when you can force them into corners, you free to do any mix up.
I was doing some testing with f.mk whiff spd. It seems as if doing spd directly after the whiff increases the range.
It connects immediately after, but at the exact same location if I waited after whiffing, it misses.
Can anyone confirm or am I misinterpreting something?
except if you whiff she gets some easy 30% auto combo into half life super, she’s faster, and has better pokes, and of course you cant catch her like the rest of the cast. Its my worst match up personally. That and Laura. Both of them with their stupid auto’s.
I don’t get the design really. There must be some huge gief advantage I am missing. Lariat is useless, no green hand/dash. Too bad gief is always fun. really frustrated myself.
