Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

For me, I just keep absorbing his attacks with Vskill and look for a chance to use the V trigger. Very uphill battle. Still always lose to decent Sims.

Yeah, like, it’s always been a tough matchup, but it feels especially bad in 5. Don’t think I beat a single sim all weekend.

Sim’s teleport is bonkers in SFV. Shit is stupid fast and that new j.HP is hilarious in it. Air Yoga Flame beats everything that isn’t armored too.

Yeah I just use Xsplit to stream it, and upload the highlights from twitch to youtube.

But I guess I should start actually saving the archives in 720p and upload those instead.

Zangief’s CA doesn’t cause hard knockdown. Did they removed it from CAs or is it a bug?

People keep saying Zangief can blow up DPs with air SPD?
What’s the trick, cause every time I try air EX SPD I still get hit by their invincible DPs.

Also, not sure if this was known already, but Zangief gets a 4f safe jump off his cr.HK on CH, all u have to do is dash once and then jump.

I know it’s early but I don’t get how Gief is supposed to pressure the enemy when every time you land and an SPD you lose all your momentum because it’s a techable kd. You can’t even dash or fwd mk to put pressure, they are out of range.

Depends on which version of SPD. Light version puts the opponent farther out of reach. Heavy version puts the opponent almost next to you.

LP SPD is redic. If you could keep pressure after it would be broken.

Exactly. Plus throws/command grabs only allow in place tech and no backwards tech. Meaning you don’t get to gain any real distance from him. Landing HP SPD is pretty much a free mix up they just tech right into your SPD range again.

This zangief is fun but theres two things i dont like so far:

  • this new lariat is useless, i always get stuffed when i try to antiair someone. It seems more like a combo-ender than an antiair.

  • 5frames startup spd is retarded.

5 frame SPD is probably to stop people churning.

I think that’s exactly the way the developers intended it. The SPD is 5 frames to prevent you from just mashing out an SPD between blockstrings.

The lariat is made that way so that it prevents you from having a magic button for everyone’s air attack and oki options. There are other antiair options anyway, like cr.hp, or meet people air-to-air with SPD. Though I wish KKK lariat with lower body invul is still there to counter some of Dhalsim’s pokes.

Maybe I’m wrong, but when I was testing Zangief in training I was able to stuff low attacks with Lariat. But perhaps I caught the startup frames not the active ones.

I lariat as anti air a lot when done EARLY, as late it gets stuffed. We dont have data yet, but it’s hard to tell what properties it has currently (PPP or KKK).

cr.HP is always gonna be the better AA for positioning, but I wish Lariat had at least SOME invincibility, It’s pretty slow and u can’t get anything going for landing one anyway.

Another thing that bothers me about Lariat, is how specific it is in combos. It only works on standing opponents unless you’re almost point blank, this makes his pressure game very weak when u don’t have CA.
I also dislike how u need to spend a bar whenever u want to Air SPD in combos, but that’s mainly because he currently relies on CA too much. I’d find this less of an issue if his Lariat combos were more consistent.
