Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

I’m not one to change people’s opinion. Let them think what they want.

Gief is big on adapting to an opponent. You can’t just throw things out without thinking. So testing an opponent just to see what they do is pretty important, I think.

IMO, people should have a side character to deal with Guile and Sim. Those are horrible matches.

I would bet anything that all the non Gief users here would quit the game if they played him. Come on guys play him for a couple days against good players and then come back and see how you feel instead of never playing him and saying he’s good smh.

Some people just despise Gief so much that they would never even think of using him. But yeah, people using him just to see what he’s like might change some opinions.

The Gief salt is real.

Amen to that. When Snake Eyez Zangief put Nuckledu Sonic Slut into losers at Combo Breaker. Best feeling in the world.

It takes skills to run a bad matchup up the flag pole. And the eternal struggle is what constantly brings me back to Z.

What Snake Eyez did was amazing.

Not really. His iron body is invincible, so beware!

When the crowd is rooting for the Russian instead of Akuma in a Guile MU,yeah you know the hype was real. Snake was on another level, very inspiring stuff there. I really wanted him to win and see Gief finally grab a major.

He is definitely viable. I can’t believe snake did that well against guile though. That match up and the Sim match are ass. While he may lose slightly to a few other characters(Nash, chun, Birdie, Urien) those matchups are winnable.
Who are guiles and sims worst matchups? My secondary is Birdie and he sucks against those two. I need a secondary that works well against those two.

Balrog. At this point in the game I’ve settled into being a Balrog main with Gief as my alternate. Rog is excellent against Guile and Sim and Gief does OK against Laura, Cammy, and Mika–Rog’s worst matchups. The only thing I dislike about pairing them is that Vega is a ptoblem for both. And that might be a big issue with the Vega 2.5 buffs.

Thank Jebus he didn’t, or else in season 3 SPD would be blockable and Lariat would have 180 recovery frames.

Gief really doesnt have that many bad matchups.

7-3 Guile, Sim
6-4 Urien, Vega, Birdie, nash(barely), chun(barely)

that is 6 out of 25

not to mention he fights the top 10(outside of Guile,Urien) really well. and by fighting them well i mean he is pretty even with them not that he steamrolls them.

no he is not perfect but think about the characters that get steamrolled by balrog alone (chun,Ryu,sim, ken, nash, rashid, akuma, juri, alex, bison, kolin) these characters have no chance against him.

if you are going into a tournament have a secondary for guile and sim and learn the 6-4 matchups and you should be fine.

based on matchups and problems other characters have i would put him at 13th. my top 11 is Rog, Guile, Ibuki, Karin, Laura, Urien, Cammy, Necalli, Mika, Vega, Rashid, Ken and then Gief at 13. So mid tier

Ok i have to bite, explain how he loses to

Alex:
R Mika:
Juri:
Ibuki:
Laura:
Cammy:
Ryu:

as i said in a previous post i think he loses to 6 characters but these 7 i think he beats everyone else is even. please explain why you think he loses to those?

He also loses to Necalli and most likely Ed. Too early to say, but it doesn’t look good. I think he loses to Kolin and Ken as well. Akuma, FANG, Cammy, Karin, Ibuki, Rashid and Juri are question marks.

Putting all that aside, the most positive person in the Gief forums putting him at 13th doesn’t reflect well on Gief being top tier, which is what everyone else seems to believe.

Gief doesn’t have that many bad mu’s? Uh ok sure, you’re the only Gief player I’ve heard say that tbh. That’s your opinion and that’s great but first you list your top 11 with characters that beat him or body him and then you say he fights the top 10 “really well”. There’s really nothing to explain though. I think characters like Cammy, Necalli, Karin, Ibuki, Rashid, Laura, etc beat him and you think they don’t so it’s just our opinions. I think FANG, Ken, and Kolin beat him too and you don’t so it is what it is. When Itazan loses to two no names and doesn’t even make it out of pools that tells me how truly weak the character is.

I think it speaks to the games balance. There are five busted characters and then fang who is useless. Everyone else is pretty much up for debate.

Months ago, before S2, we got ‘Get Rekts’ even in the Gief forum for saying he won’t be top 10. Now nobody here believes he’s top 10.

I don’t think Kolin and FANG are bad matchups for Gief. Lariat can deal with a lot of FANG’s things.

Kolin has to play a careful and precise game. Jumping in on her with air normals can condition her to parry you, but opens her up to eventual empty jump SPD strategies.

Personally, I think Gief has a lot of even matchups. He’s viable up until you face someone counter picking Gief.

So basically when a pro Zangief loses you’re right, but when a pro gief wins it doesn’t count? Christ, this guy lol. Please tell me you other gief players aren’t such sulky kids… Gief loses to everyone apparently, even his absolute favourable matchups!

A shame you have such a godlike AV with such ridiculous comments. Are you by chance a flat earther as well?

What are his “absolute favourable mu’s” genius? Please enlighten us. And let me guess, you don’t play him either do you?

Also when did I say it doesn’t count if a Gief wins? Is that what you do, put words in my mouth to make your points? Why don’t you list all the great wins by Gief players in this game. All those top tourney placings that I’m not counting.

How about we discuss actual strategy instead of just bitching?

Moves that can be neutral jumped over and punished with the new headbutt are now riskier against Z, maybe that can be used in certain situations. I must admit the new kick-counter seems very situational, as anyone found a way to use it that’s not too risky?
