Agreed but SF5 took it to a whole new level and in the process destroyed what SF is. I’m still shocked every time I play at how bad the game is.

Oh yeah, SFV is definitely the worst offender. I’ve pretty much lost all hope for this game. Maybe a miracle will happen and AM2 will announce VF6 to deliver us from scrubdom. One can only hope…

If you truly believe that I have to ask why do you care anymore. Not trying to be an ass I’m just asking because the only reason I still play is I’m hopeful they will fix the problems and I see some sort of light at the end of the tunnel.

Real simple, I love SF and I love playing Gief. I think it’s a little denial too tbh. I never thought they would make a SF so bad that it would make me wanna quit playing but SF5 has done that. I barely play now anyway so the end is near. Basically I only play now when friends wanna run sets or if I have 30-40 minutes to kill. Almost all of my online SF friends quit playing a long time ago so they ask me the same question all the time too lol.

Fair enough. I will say I was a hard core soul calibur player tournament level back in the 2 days. Then 3 came out and I hated it as it was a broken mess. I forced myself to play it for a year, it was miserable. If you hate it that much lesson is you always hate the flaws and never get over it. Quit now you will feel better.

Ok headbutt is cool and does help but the counter is worse than useless. After playing last night just around 15 matches it came out accidentally about four times. The first time that costs me a match I’m gonna be furious. They need to change it to a kick but they need to change it to a kick button.

No, no, counter is awesome and Gief is at least top ten now. Just ask Deviljin and all the other non-Gief playing experts.

Well I was just letting you know that there were people on this very forum who were saying that characters or the entire game of Season 1 had too many defensive options. This was obviously before people optimized setplay off the double quickrises which was an initial issue for people (and technically still is).

Karin is capable of rushdown but she’s not a rushdown character. She’s not Rog or MVC3 Wolverine and even they have their moments of sitting in mid range. It’s like saying 3S Chun is a rushdown character even though she’s capable of rushdown. Just not a very smart analysis of the character.

The counter will be something that Itazan will find a way to use in some situation and the commentators will congratulate him for it. It will be at least that useful.

I don’t know if Gief is top 10 or not, but he’s probably not too far off from it. He’s not bottom 20 or whatever either (sarcastic number, but still).

The reason gief is looked at as high tier is this is a close range fighting game about burst damage and 50/50s both areas that Gief excels at. Gief fights the top tier very well with the exception of Guile. The reason he will drop in the tier list is the fact that he has a few very bad matchups that over time will probably get worse without changes. People will just start counter picking him soon.

On someones point that the characters arent diverse i completely disagree. i think they made a big effort to make the cast very different, the problem is the only viable strat is rush down right now so since everyone is rushing down all the time the characters all look the same.

And I would say the only reason ppl think Gief is high tier is Itazan, which is really disrespectful towards him IMO as it suggests that he’s winning because of his character and not the fact that he’s fucking godlike. I’m kinda disappointed in the Japanese for pushing that BS. When Kuroda was mopping ppl with Q, nobody said “oh shit Q is top 5 now,” they recognized that the player was on another level.

Just curious, which of the top tiers does he fight well? Obviously this is my opinion but he loses to Guile, Ibuki, Laura, Urien, Cammy, Boxer, Karin, and Necalli. What else is there lol.

Just played a couple of matches and counter accidentally came out TWICE in one round. Forward throw is useless and Lariat is nerfed.

But there’s 20 extra damage on the headbutt that you almost never use, so Gief is top 5 now.

I still haven’t been able to use the moves in a way to benefit him I wish they had training mode for the PSN.

Ok Laura, Cammy, Boxer, Karin all feel even to me. Guile he loses bad and Urien he loses slightly. Necalli/Ibuki i go back and forth on.

i am not saying he beats them but i just think he fights them well. Problem is a mediocre guile gives geif hell and a good one blows him up. Same can be said for Sim but there are no mediocre Sims as shitty players give up on him quick.

He’s supposed to beat Boxer, Ibuki, and Laura but in this current meta where one touch can very easily equal death from those characters I’m not so sure. You have to play perfectly and if they convert to their v trigger combos it’s basically over.

I do think he beats Cammy. Loses to Guile/Urien.

Headbutt is good and I was able to land it naturally as intended last night in a few matches. It’s a great air to air that probably isn’t going to lose or even trade. Again, it works also after the opponent is already stunned and replaces j.hp as the combo starter to lariat or super (air headbutt, headbutt, st.lk xx lariat or air headbutt, headbutt, c.mp xx super).

Lariat is nerfed in that the hurtboxes now match the animation. Easier to punish on whiff or block. It’s fair.

The counter is a huge problem. I had it come out two unintentionally. Once when trying to lariat and once when just poking with c.mp. It is critical to get this feedback to Capcom. It needs to be dp + kicks. Please do your part and spread this to Capcom unity and Reddit where I know Capcom employees lurk.

Everyone’s not rushing down all the time and Ed is another character that can viably whiff punish, has one of the best fireball games, basically the strongest AA in the game and can generally play a far game. He’s good for those people that want to stay in mid range. He just happens to have really good offense also.

Guile is probably the highest tier character that directly counter picks Gief, but he requires time to really optimize and not just be a fraud Guile that’ll get blown up. Luckily Ed just came out and I think he probably beats Gief worse than Guile and isn’t as hard to play. It’s basically like dealing with a much faster Ryu with longer buttons, 22 anti airs, a fast fireball he can fake and better offense. Basically the worst thing that could happen to Gief probably other than Sim in this game.

Look at this closet-Gief downplaying, he’s desperate for even more Gief buffs. With the new crouch throw and his counter, this matchup is easily 7-3 in Gief’s favor.

But seriously, Ed is shaping up to be a real problem. What you said is all true, and I want to add that he can bypass the neutral (not that he needs to…) or catch flex with that psycho-strings thing he does. His forward dash reminds me of season 1 Nash. This guy has a ridiculous amount of tools. It’s still early days, but it doesn’t look good for Gief.

On another note, the unintended counters are a huge problem. Just now I even got one while trying to SPD. The input really needs to change.
