counter might be useful against Nash and Birdie, who have a couple of horizontal kicks they tend to spam

but does it grab CROUCHING kicks? I doubt it but that could be huge

I assume Lariat still combos, just not crouchers, or maybe doesn’t hit crouchers out of combos

vs Dhalsim still gonna be the hardest MU in the game

e: someone on gaf pointed out that the neutral headbutt might cancel fireballs, so that’s could be a small tool against Dhalsim. can’t wait

Just finished reading the full patch notes. Most of the cast was buffed significantly (Vega’s cr. fierce from -5 to +3 on block!) so it looks like it’s even more of an uphill struggle now. No use in whining just yet, but it doesn’t look good. let’s see how it plays out…

LordWilliam just explained to me that Lariat combos are fine.

The Lariat change could have made it a much worse AA though I think? Idk where the hurtbox has been expanded, horizontally or vertically

I am ok with this, Lariat AA was too good and made me stop using cHP which gave me more time to position myself

You might change your tune when it starts losing to jump-ins heavy attacks (If it does)

I dont get that new move… seems unnecessary overspecific…

PS: horizontally angled…? Does the game even differentiate between “angled” moves?
And why only kicks?

The move sounds as it was intentionally designed to NOT fuck up dhalsim. His horizontal move is a punch and his kick is “downwards”

I would assume it is to fight against characters who rely heavily on long range kick attacks to keep Gief out?

This might actually be a fantastic move if it gives us a good set-up when successful.

Lariat aa was too good? Uh no it wasn’t I’m sorry. It still gets blown up by certain characters/moves. These changed are mind boggling to me. Why not just give us gh instead? And if lariat whiffs against crouchers again it’s gonna be horrendous. That headbutt sounds like it’s gonna be completely useless too but who knows. If everyone’s improving then we’re in serious trouble AGAIN.

After getting bitchslapped by Gief in story mode, Balrog forced Capcom to give Gief a lil Lariat nerf in exange of a new move that can’t work on him because no kicks lol

Btw, this is all you need to know. “We have noticed that his lariat is a large source of frustration for his opponents in that it’s extremely hard to punish.” I just gotta laugh now, what more can you say at this point. Also Alex gets more health, Rog doesn’t get damage nerfs at all, Laura still seems the same, and they’re overthinking srk’s to the point of insanity. Just took a quick glimpse but they have no idea what the hell they’re doing.

The lariat nerf has me concerned but the new moves are interesting for sure.

If that counter deals with Sims St hk that would be a bonus. Especially considering Sim got a new move too.

Really it all comes down to the lariat though. Hurt-box being expanded to the same as the hit-box seems excessive.

If the Lariat loses its AA properties it will only be useful as a combo ender, nothing else.

The Lariat nerf seems targeted 100% towards bad players

Do you think Tundra Storm will leave Gief in a standing reset position? Like at +2 or something?

Also @Plaid_Unicorn let me know that Lariat is still going to be fine for AA’ing due to the nerfs only affecting the revolutions. Not the initial spin, so it will still AA just fine. The lariat nerfs only seem to nerf whiffed lariats or incredibly early lariats. So Gief probably got overall better due to n.jump headbutt and the new counter move.

The new flying headbutt might actually make his dash > throw(os n.jump) tech even better. You don’t OS the ex borscht any more, just do an immediate flying headbutt.

Neither SLP or Chp can replace lariat as both can not anti cross up

It’s gonna suck if it doesn’t AA anymore. I’m fine with removing the ability to mash it and catch crouching limbs; considering his other disadvantages, I don’t think it’s a big deal but I can admit it’s kinda vanilla SF4-ish. If they’re shortening the hurtbox, I don’t see how that doesn’t affect his whiff punishing with st.LK xx lariat, tho
