Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

Man you can employ the same shit though. Don’t think about so much of " Oh if my SPD doesn’t work i get punished for huge damage" and think more about " Ok lets see what my opponent does after I landed an SPD on him" You have to spend more time figuring out your opponents habits while spending less time thinking about how they can punish you heavily. A lot of gief players feel he is much better this season which i agree and it may change with this upcoming patch since i don’t really trust balance patches by capcom anymore but still making hard reads is just a part of using zangief

Yeah, I get that hard reads are part of playing a grappler – but they are literally the ONLY thing sfv gief has. There’s no “on reaction.” There’s no “block well and punish.” Its quite literally get frame advantage and make your guess.

Not really. He has option select throw, or you can frame trap them you don’t have to spd the whole time.

+2 attack blocked into cr lk cr jab hit confirm lariat beats all non invincible options even jump back with almost 0 risk.

Yes he is more read based than other characters but he is not only reads.

This is the best thing about Zangief now IMO

On wakeup if they’re right next to me: If I think they’ll block I’ll do fierce SPD. If I think they’ll do anything else (except invincible reversal) I do meaty low short, low jab, hit-confirm Lariat. If they block the low short and jab I’ll go for jab SPD, or st. roundhouse if I think they might jump away.

St rh is a big risk, if they remain crouched you get hurt. delayed iaspd is better plus it is not a guess just reaction.

Or you can do cr short, cr jab, if they block those st mp, cr jab. You are +3 after the jab being blocked so the medium punch beats all non-invincible options, keeps them grounded and if the medium punch hits the cr jab combos for roughly the same damage as a non-crush counter round house. This is almost zero risk and a good way to condition your opponent to block.

I used to do IASPD but I got AA’d a lot when they remain crouched. All in all I think st. roundhouse is the less dangerous option. Also depends on who you play I suppose.

St. strong after low short, low jab seems like a good option, but surely the low jab won’t reach after low short, low jab, st. strong? I’ll try this out in training mode when I get home.

I don’t know if this has been covered yet, but what do you do against Cammy’s alternating dive kicks/regular jump ins? Whenever I try to AA jab her jump ins I get hit with the dive kick before the jab comes out. If I block it, she still has frame advantage so she wins either way. When she gets in the fun really begins, as my opponent can just close his eyes and smash any one of her godlike buttons to stuff all of my normals.

I’d hate to sound like LTG here, but what a braindead, skill-less joke of a character.

Cr fierce works for aa or well timed lariat. If you react late block if she hits high she is negitive if she hits low positive. If she hits low vReversal

Don’t worry she is completely braindead, I’ve been saying that since day one along with Ken. It feels like she can just do anything she wants cause it’s all safe and we have to eat it all without v-reversal. What the hell were they thinking making all these moves safe on block lol just retarded.

I know the sim matchup is tough already , but I cannot for the life of me get in without eating limbs and yoga flames all day . I know lariat can beat standing mp, but what do u do when they sit there and just throw out yoga flames then random limbs . Seems like almost everything stuffs what gief can do . Any tips guys ?

be random.

stand outside of his limb range… wait for a yoga fire, time jump over - now you in a 50/50 of sorts: jump or dash and hope you get lucky. DON’T HESITATE. you want as much as possible to keep the Sim on his toes.

crouch block/walk your way in but never for too long, try to get a read on the pattern of normals/ yoga fires the Sim is throwing out and make your move when within jump range.

random ex running bear after jump in and still outside spd range is surprisingly effective.

you’re always going to take damage, sometimes you’ll never get in. that’s just how this MU goes. best to roll with it and try to have fun.

just to add. as someone who’s picked up Sim for season 2 this MU is not as easy as it often appears for Sim. I mean it’s definitely in Sim’s favor but once Gief gets in it’s pretty much over.

One thing i’ve learnt is playing lame (staying back) is the safest way to approach this MU. Gief’s lariat and jab destroys Sim’s instant air teleport (IAT) and mixups.

One thing I’ll say for those struggling with this matchup is to put some time in the lab with Sim. learning his short comings will help you in reacting to execution errors be it dropped IAT’s or a mistimed V-skill attempt.

Also the best Sims’ to play against IMO are those that like to throw out long-range normals preemptively. This you can use to your advantage to get in. A better Sim player will sit outside of any dash/jump range and will wait for you to make your move and then react accordingly. That’s when you’re fucked.

If the Sim player knows the mu and doesn’t fuck up then it’s a 10-0 mu imo. We have to either get lucky with a guess/read or they have to screw up badly. Don’t just try and bulldog your way in even though that’s what you wanna do. Block a lot and slowly creep forward.

On the ground f.mk can stuff limbs. Cr.mp, st.mp, and st.lk can all whiff punish limbs. Don’t spam lariat like an idiot trying to catch limbs cause any competent Sim will whiff punish you every time but an occasional lariat is good if you have a read.

Jump knees will sometimes beat or trade so it’s an option. Also always be ready to air spd. The mu sux big time but if you get in things can change very quickly. One thing I see with a lot of mediocre/bad players is that once they get the opponent in the corner they immediately let them out again by going for a cross up and just not being aware of the situation. This mu in particular, if you get Sim in the corner KEEP HIM THERE.

this MU is one of the most frustrating imo . I mean once u get in then you can do some damage . But it takes so much patience and I feel by the time u might have any glimmer of hope of getting in you’ve already been eating random limbs or yoga flames most of the match . Maybe I’m just bitter lol who would u guys suggest is a good counter pick for sim . Not saying I give up on gief but it’s just so damn frustrating !!

Balrog, Urien, Necali

Better yet pick a secondary that can handle Sim.

Alex and Mika are also good choices if you want to stick with a grappler.

But this is the year of Gief! Not the year of Alex or Mika! Look at how many top 8’s Gief players have made so far!

oh wait…

Well be positive, I’m sure lariat won’t get nerfed TOO hard in the upcoming patch. After all, everyone who doesn’t play Gief thinks he’s amazing.

I’ve been experimenting with Alex a little bit, Not quite sold on him yet . But think I might try playing sim myself a bit to get familiar with his moves . I know it’s a tough matchup in general but I can’t jump ship … yet lol
