Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

The problem with Gief’s footsies in 5 is the whole crush counter system. In 2 and 4 he had fantastic light attacks, in 4 he had a great medium punch, and yes, he technically still has ALL of that in 5…but if he gets paired with someone who’s got a great fierce he gets blown up for pressing those buttons. The incredibly messed up thing is that a character with a great crush counter in some ways actually feels more like a grappler than grapplers do. You’re still trying to bait your opponent into doing what you want, and the payout is usually much higher for making that correct read.

I agree, one of the first things that struck me as odd about this game is how light and medium attacks generally don’t have priority over heavy attacks like in previous games. When playing footsies (with any character) I find myself using the longest range attacks, which are usually the heavy ones.

3rd Strike and KI also have priority trade systems so you just haven’t played enough fighting games if you’re thrown off by it.

Just going to have to be more careful about what you throw out and make sure your whiff punishing is on point against the heavies. Don’t throw buttons unless you have to. Especially in this game where whiffing a button right before someone jumps means you’re getting blocking a jump in or getting hit pretty much guaranteed.

Alright guys I have no clue what to do against Akuma , anyone got any pointers ?

I’ve seen talk saying it’s Gief favour because he has a good AA option against air fireball, but I don’t know why Akuma has to jump at Gief to begin with. Should just be your normal walk to corner gameplan, his fireballs are the tricky part to get around, and if he lands one that knocks you down and gets oki you may be in for some trouble. I don’t like using any st.hp fishing because he can get nice punishes on whiff if he walks back out of it’s range, so I mainly stick to st.mp and cr.mk against Akuma. I like to walk up really slowly working through the fireballs and look for a LP/EX SPD opportunity wherever I can get it. If you get into the close-midrange area you can lariat his fireballs on reaction too. It’s pretty good.

If it’s a jumpy Akuma just use lariat and beat all of his options, simple.

Ive heard that as well , but I feel it also may depend on how well the Akuma player knows the gief matchup …I been playing with a platinum level Akuma recently (im a silver /ultra silver )in the battle lounge and just been gettin my a** handed to me everytime we play

The match is slightly in your favor for several reasons. His pokes a very stubby so you can beat him at range with normals, lariat shuts down all of his air options. His red fireball can be jumped and punished on reaction and you can grab his teleport once you get them in the corner so he has no way out. Not to mention his health is significantly lower than yours.

You were right good ones will not jump at you and yes his fireballs can be tricky to circumvent but each one blocked does 10 damage and each one hit does 60 so they really don’t matter that much.

I will thank all the non-zangief players saying it is the year of zangief for any nerfs incoming

I can’t imagine they’ll tone down Gief. This is targeted at Urien and Balrog.

I don’t know man, it’s hard to debate where in the past they have buffed gief only to nerf him in the next patch. It’s all up in the air in how gief will remain for the rest of the year

Here is what I think they’ll nerf:

Reduced lariat hitbox. As it is now, people are actually punished for throwing out random pokes from a distance. Can’t have that.

All SPD versions will be blockable. Throwing is cheap.

HP is reduced to 950 to match Mika and Chun. Gief’s 1050 HP is clearly a byproduct of patriarchal bias. Why would you chauvinist pigs take for granted that a man is tougher than a woman?

Optical and audial nerfs. Gief’s bulge will be reduced in an effort to combat toxic masculinity. His chest hair will be waxed. Also, instead of “muscle power” he will henceforth shout “flower power” when executing his CA.

^ lol, You joking, but I’m 90% expecting lariat to get nerfed

It happened to him, it can happen to Zangief.
I hope they don’t do a another patch just because I’m convinced that they’ll nerf more characters I like and buff ones I don’t.

I said it before but Akuma will be a bad mu for Gief when all is said and done. People keep saying lariat this and lariat that. Umm a GOOD akuma doesn’t need to jump lol. He has a million options and hits like a truck. The only disadvantage he has is his life.

Wow, 4-0 Akuma. I think it’s safe to say that it’s a bad matchup for Gief when even Itazan gets bodied. Also, I am never able to Lariat that dive kick of his. Beats me clean every time, I went back to using low fierce as an AA.

I believe it will be the same story as last season Itazan will have the best showings and no Giefs at CC.

Akuma is going to be a problem very soon. Good to see his ground game is better than people wanted to admit.

New Gief seems pretty solid though. Looking forward to some newer results from Itazan

Ok i am confused, what did you see during this that makes this a bad matchup for Gief. I am seriously wondering.
Bad matchups to me are ones where the character has tools that just shut down your options like Sim Limbs or Guile projectiles i didnt see that here.

What i saw is Itazan making bad reads and bad punishes(yes that can happen to the greatest of players)
At 1 minute he went for RBG instead of FSPD and had bad oki because of it, even then he could have blocked on wakeup and won the match.
at 124 he lariat the fireball which is pretty easy to do at that distance but he didnt try it again.
At 1:50 he went for SPD when any other button would have probably won the match
he kept trying to headbut red fireballs even though it never worked.
He kept punishing st fierce(-5) with cr jab even though he was in jab spd range.
at 5:20 he parried the overhead and then went into vtrigger(execution error) instead of doing the flex.
at 6:20 he punished a missed Heavy Hurricane kick with st MP
at 9:01he had the match won with a vtrigger combo but did CA which depleted his resources for the next round. if he would have saved it he could have ended the next round at 10:20
At 12:07 he could have CA to win the match.

i am just posting all of this not to degrade Itazan as he is the best in my opinion, just saying that tokido outplayed him. There were multiple rounds that he did not do the optimal option and he lost because of it.
I see nothing in the post you made that shows this is a bad matchup.
