Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

You have to hold forward. At least that’s how I have always done it.

Can someone invite me to all mighty Zangief Discord? I might be able to contribute something helpful there between bigger write-up projects.

oh, thats probably it. I was playing zangief in the beggining and doing this consistently, I changed characters now I’m back to him and forgot about this, thanks man

No prob.

By the way, I am trying to find some more creative uses for f+MK (which might be very underrated in how effective it is). Still testing out timing and options for it, but here is what I have so far:

  1. Better than “throw tech”. There is no need to “throw tech” with Zeif. What’s cool is this is for normal, command, and CA grabs. Any time you think/know your opp. is going to attempt a throw this is your best option as it is completely throw invincible. The best thing I have ever countered was actually another Zief. After I scored a knockdown I had a feeling he was going to wake with his CA. Played it perfectly and scored a counter hit which allowed me to continue my offense…

  2. Using as part of your wake up game after your opp. is knocked down. Most people when you are up close after knockdown will either go for reversal (which is risky) or they are going to get out of the way by jumping or back dash because of SPD fear. Using f+MK will catch opp. that are jumping or back dash (you have to be in real close for back dash). And it now opens up an option for them to have to block which of course SPD wins that matchup.

  3. After v-skill or blocking to bait throw attempts.

Now I have also used this against low attacks, esp after jump ins. But I am not sure if it only works on certain low attacks and I definitely don’t have the timing down consistently. But I have used it against Ryu and Nash users a few times as well as some of the other characters. I am guessing it is the same thing as predicting a throw attempt as f+MK is supposed to “jump over” low hitting attacks.

Finally, for follow up (and I am definitely hoping for other suggestions) I like using st.LK > Lariat or a SPD (esp on counter hit).

It’s definitely hard to time against low attacks or stuff like Necalli’s seismo.

It is very hard to time. I typically do it after jump ins depending on how the match is going. Usually, if you keep your standing stance as you are blocking the initial jump attack they will either go low or try to grab.

If you input or just mash f+MK after they first attack it should counter both a throw or a low hit attempt…but if they attack high you are screwed. But like I said that is usually not the case if you are already blocking high.

Have you watched the frame data video? It gave me a slightly better idea on when exactly the hurtbox is raised. Long story short it’s pretty far into the move so doing it on reaction is hard.

I have tried watching frame data and other videos. I just can’t practice that way. I have to do it in real time. Even on level 8 the CPU is somewhat predictable once you learn the pattern.

A lot of times I go into matches seeing if I can get something to work and how many times I can get it to work, not really concerned about wins and losses at this point in the game. I am just relaying the situation in which I found that it works.

No its not easy, but nothing with Geif is “easy”.

Just had the worse online connectivity issues with this game… Every match I played the opp. was vanishing esp on Jumps and Dashes.

Wanted it to see how many games it would last, 50+ losses in a row later I just decided to call it a night. I thought I would be able to win at least 1 game…it truly is impossible IMO. Also the funniest part is when you go check replays it makes it look the connection was totally fine and lag free.

SMH

If you’re on PS4 and use the Share function, you can see the match in all its laggy glory. Also, I need some advice on rematches. I feel like this is a real head-game kind of thing for me. How often do you guys rematch against people of lower rank? I feel like rematching against people would be the best way to rack up points, but too often they see through Gief’s strength during the first match and then the second one is just me playing against my frustrations as they play keep away the entire time. Then I make too many mistakes and lose, losing more points than I actually earned. So is it worth it to rematch against people of lower rank, or should I just play mostly against people of the same rank?

Honestly, I feel gief is pretty strong in set play. Think of the first game as honest more straightforward play. After you’ve learned how they like to defend. Neutral jump, backdash, back jump forward jump, v reversals, reversals, wakeup buttons, giefs gameplan off of reads becomes more effective.

You get the opportunity to adapt to their defense and punish them for it. Don’t let them adapt to your tendencies, change your gameplan, and make them think harder than oh jump more, or jump less.

Lately, I’ve been watching more SF5 streams looking Gief players and it amazes me how utterly clueless/brainless most people are about this game and this character. It really seems most out there think Gief is good and some even think he’s op. Are these the idiots Combofiend listens to? I read all these retarded messages in the chats that are completely wrong and it just makes me sad. And of course none of them play him which is even more ridiculous.

Dammit. I can’t do it. I keep winning the first match and then losing the second because then they play keep away. Until I brush up on my catch-up strategy, looks like I’m only doing single matches for now.

The worst part is when they insist that armor/tornado is a suitable sub for everything they’ve taken out.

Grapplers are scrub destroyers. They can’t adapt to the different defensive style required to beat them. They feel downback/random reversals should beat anything. Zangief dumps on this. If they weren’t afraid to learn the neutral game, they would understand the struggle.

I feel gief will take a critical nerf in next patch
E.g reduce the hitbox of c.lp

Zangief is way too strong in this game, he deserve so many nerfs, his grabs are way too fast, his normals are the best in the game, he is every tool against every character in the game, you don’t need to use your brain with him, every scrub is a free win, chun and ryu needs mad buffs to have a chance against him, snake eyez and hagejin droped zangief because he is just too strong, it’s no challenge.

-says no one ever-, except maybe combofiendfraud

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if cr.jab got nerfed. Probably ex.spd too. Not even kidding sadly.
