I’m posting this since I just shared these thoughts in the discord group regarding reset opportunities during v trigger :
Jumping up into body splash after full v trigger is a reset option too
You’ll be in range for ex spd on the ground or jump up and air spd them
A new level of resets you guys can look into is using the short suction and purposefully not doing the full combo
Like, if I were in a situation where I have v trigger and full meter, if I land a st.hp uncharged in neutral, I can either : A.) Confirm into full v trigger combo with ex followup/reset. B.) Confirm into super since it will combo from short suction and keep the rest of your v trigger to use C.) Confirm into short suction but do fierce spd, which will leave you with a meaty knockdown situation, full meter, and plenty of v trigger to work with.
While option C has the most potential to blow up in your face, it also reaps the greatest rewards, because if you manage to land the fierce spd, you set yourself up to get into either option A or B
So the idea is that if you’re a little late on your Anti-Air read you can charge s.HP as an alternative. You’ll take some white damage but the armor will let you land a s.HP. If your timing is just right then it’ll CrushCounter and now you’re off to the races. If it doesn’t CrushCounter then you’re opponent can block afterwards.
I think it depends on the angle that they are jumping in at and what type of jump attack are they are using. It seems that Gief’s head is still hittable and doesn’t have armor.
If any of you want to look at my stuff, you can search for cfn ID : TSSHBIC (I play on someone else’s ps4 because I’m cheap) I play the majority of the time but there might be an occasional chun li match from the other person. We’re at Super gold so maybe my footage could help some.
Also, alot of the initial frustration with gief has vanished for the most part. Sim and nash can be kind of annoying sometimes though
It’s certainly not glamorous nor does it evoke Muscle Power…but Zangief’s c.LP and s.LP are some of the best buttons in the whole game. Definitely no shame in it, especially when you know how frustrated you make your opponents when you stop all of their shit with just one button. I mean, isn’t that part of the reason why we play as Zangief?
I play gief for the intimidation of SPD. It forces people to play a certain way. As it stands, avoiding the SPD by jumping is too heavily in their favor.
Best case scenario is hitting cr lp, St HK, or j. SPD. Cr lp does almost no damage, St hk is punishable if opponent is crouching, and j SPD is punishable. All of our mix-ups lead to the opponent getting much more damage from a good read than vice versa.
His anti zoning tools are mediocre and the reward for getting in isn’t enough. I feel these issues would be a nonfactor if he had a legitimate bnb combo that punished jumping or backdashing. Cr lp x3 is just pathetic. 81 damage max for cr lp x3 and 90 for St hk.
I’m still sticking with him. He’s fun to play. Then again I’m a scrubby Silver ~2500 LP player so I could imagine it gets harder against smarter players. But the way I see it, if you get good with him when he’s bottom tier, you will be godlike with him when he gets his inevitable buff.
Absolutely agree with Kanon in that Gief’s biggest weakness is jumping opponents. Backdashing opponents too. When the opponent can nullify our SPDs with their directionals, not even their damn buttons, we are left with few options. St.hk and st.hp work good for jumpers/backdashers but even then you’re talking about a 50/50 where if they don’t jump/backdash we are at a disadvantage. Gief is very easy to evade, and yet at the same time very easy to rushdown. The answer I guess is to st.jab/cr.jab our way to victory and hope to land a V-trigger combo later in the round.
I have a quick question, Can Gief’s headbutt negate a projectile and hit your opponent at the same time? Like if nash threw a sonic boom and immediately dashed behind it could he be hit too?
Gief in this game to me feels like Hugo in SF4 without claps. Super slow compared to everyone else and although I still have fun with Gief, something is missing.
The headbutt has a projectile hitbox as well. So you neutralise the hadouken first then hit Ryu in recovery.
But in prevention, your much better off using stand hk, more range, faster start up, has a hurt box that goes over the hadouken to tag Ryu during trades. But best of all, launches Ryu for the ex BD when you counter hit the fireball startup.
