Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

I’m using

I returned my FC4. I found that the d-pad is not ideal for SPD. I think xbox360’s crosspad is much better. I’ve heard opposite so I guess it’s just personal preference.

PS2 pad all day

Hey guys I have more of a general Street fighter issue that is seriously hurting my game. I am almost free to throw because I am very bad at tech throwing. I’m not sure what the problem is, but I rationalize it as I’d rather eat a throw than eat some kind of mp into combo. With this mentality I eat too many throws. Is there a way to practice this and get better?

Sh!t so hard to keep up on all posts… and so much to tell here I go:

There is definitely a bug on landing frames I got grabbed out of my EX SPD by landing opponents :bawling:

sLP is a good Anti Air I usually follow it up with sHK or HP SPD but I just read somebody uses Headbutt will try that also, what do you guys usually do?

Gief needs a Santa Claus outfit its just so necessary I am not sure why Capcom has never given this to Gief its almost obvious dam! You agree?

Can somebody break down Gief V-skill? I’ll like to know frame data on how much is start up active and recovery things like what happen if you wake up with VSkill and absorb a meaty setup, what is the difference on frames if I absorb 2nd 3rd or 4th hit with that, we already know about +2 on hit but I don’t care about using that hit I need to understand frame data when you absorb hits only

For possible buffs I’ll like V-Skill not making so much gray health or being special-cancelable or something that makes it less risky. Maybe make it so you can do it in the air?
sHP to have armor all over not just upper body
ex SPD to be combo-able
Make air SPD a little better so we can always grab all shoryuken type moves.
Make Charged sHP cancelable ?

Troll Buffs:
Dive kick
Fengshuei-engine or Geneijin
Give Gief a projectile :pensive:

Where those really the best challenges they could do with Gief damn near all of it was off jump ins…

You have to exploit the game mechanics. I think its the unthrowable frames.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtyc2b6v3S0

Wake up with crouch Block for 1-2 frames, then jump back or EX SPD.

In real world sense, time your wake-up. Press DB and then immediately UB.

Or you could just block first and then attempt to tech. As the meaty attack is the primary concern, you just wake up into block stun.

This part of SFV, they need to remove. Japanese players using Jump Back+Throw Tech+Block option select stuff.

  • I think in SFV, you have 4 frames of landing recovery, even on empty jump. Frame data includes it in the jumping portion. That explains why I was never really able to land many empty jump throws.

  • Standing LP anti air reset, you have access to your most powerful attack being Headbutt

  • V Skill - can be used to counter most medium and heavy attacks

  • V Skill Body. 10 frames of recovery on release. So the attack your absorbing has to have at least 15 frames of recovery for you to SPD (if they are in range), 14 frames for crouch LP, 11 frames for CA.

  • V Skill Flex. Faster than Iron Body. 10 frames start-up till hit, on release. And can confrim into VT.

Am I the only one who thinks Alex makes zangief look outclassed? I guess I’ll know more after frame analysis, but he looks mean.

I am already silver so I understand the basic but there is something essential of Gief’s game play I don’t understand.

As a Gief player you play mixup game. For example, in wake up game you can choose meaty or SPD. If your opponent guess wrong, you deal some damage and maybe another mixup. But I don’t think the mixup favors Gief because if your opponent guess right, he will deal more damage than SPD! (Neutral jump beats SPD)

Tried the drill in the video. It’s so hard. The video made it looked easy.

Anyone know the best pokes to use in beating Chun’s normals?

I think Gief is pretty weak in throw range. He is strongest between throw range to l.SPD range. When ppl get into my throw range I’m in trouble. Smarter player will ditch their own game and only play throw game with me because it’s so effective.

A bit drill will definitely help.

There is only one pros of gief comparing with alex:
Slightly better overall damage
But alex has stable combo, longer footsies, much more get in tools, full screen guard-breaking moves…
I am sorry but Alex is outclassed gief at almost overall

Yeah. I felt I was going to have to change mains. Enjoyed every gief I’ve played except this one . He’s just too much work for the potential payoff. Even tho Im doing much better in this game than any other. Sad…

The answer seems to be… down/back

If I don’t like Alex I’ll just wait till the rest of the dlc’s are released and hopefully find someone I like. I can’t do Gief any longer in this game, it’s not fun whatsoever. I’ve been playing SF since ST when I was a kid and I’ve never been this frustrated with a character ever. Losing to so many bad players simply cause the character is so limited and can’t do shit in so many situations. I’ve even just given up in matches simply cause I just couldn’t take it anymore and I’ve never done that in the past. I grinded to 4500 and now I’m at around 2700 lol cause I’ve lost all desire to play. I’m tired of working so hard and not getting anything in return.

Guess I’ll be alone on this forum when Alex drops.

Your opponent is very afraid of SPD and the payoff if they jump one is big, so from their point of view jumping seems like the best option. That is why you have to use your grabs only sparingly and normals two thirds of the time if not more. Once you’ve hammered them with headbutt a few times they will get really scared of jumping. (It deals 200 stun which fantastic for a normal.) NOW they’re open to SPD.

Gief is all mind games, you can’t look at his mixups like simple 50/50s.

There are no secret buttons sadly, you just have to out-footsie the chun player . If they like to press standing buttons (especially s.HP.) then try to use s.HK’s long range to interrupt it and hopefully get a CC.

I want to know why they removed the crush counter from Zangief’ c. Fierce. It would have been so sweet.

I’m sticking it out with Gief for the long haul…or at least until Guile gets here.

The wins are starting to become more satisfying as players are getting better. Gief can’t impose his will on the opponent, rather he needs to be reading the opponent the whole match looking for patterns and weaknesses to exploit. He is the most mixup and mind game dependent character in the game. Gief relies heavily on v-reversal, thus we have limited access to v-trigger unless we are using v-skill throughout the match. He is an interesting character for sure. Most of my rounds are ending at the 20-30 second remaining mark but if everything goes right in the 2nd/3rd round it can end in 10 seconds. I think he is the ultimate comeback character with incredible burst damage potential. The only time the game is over is when you give up, which admittedly can be easy to do.

But they can do the same thing to Gief and Gief has fewer wake up option.

Your opponents play mind game too and a good player should play it as good as you. The difference is Gief is all mind games, other characters have more games to play. So logically Gief’s mind game should have better risk/reward ratio than the others’ but I don’t see it happen in this game.

The problem I have with his V-reversal is that it pushes the opponent out of SPD jab range. Your only real option is jab.

Are people really afraid of SPD though? Because it doesn’t feel like it since they know they can keep hitting you since SPD has no hit invincibility neither does EX.
