Zangief Flowchart (with Option Select Meaties)

question about o-s jump attack+whatever
Do you must do the jump attack high?
When I do a low hit knee, subordinate option always comes out.
is it me or is this the way it is?

Wow, an update, weird. Might be updated significantly in the future depending on the results of these questions:

–Is all of this info about how up+fierce headbutt deals with the opponent’s wakeup correct? I put characters who sometimes trade and sometimes lose in the lose category. By beat I mean both literally beating the opponent’s wakeup options or merely being safe against them.
-----Beat: Abel, Gen, Boxer, Chun, Claw, Dan, Dictator, Fuerte, Honda, Rose, Rufus, Sakura, Seth, Viper, Zangief
-----Trade: Akuma, Claw (ex flipkick), Guile, Ryu (regular dp), Sagat (regular dp)
-----Lose: Blanka, Cammy, Dhalsim (teleport), Fei, Gouken (counter), Ken, Ryu (ex dp), Sagat (ex dp)

–After Seth blocks a meaty knees at the front of his neck, does he get a free spd before I can do anything else?

–Meaty crouching jab option select sweep, does it really work on all these characters? Does regular sweep work on anyone?
-----Regular sweep: anyone?
-----Down-toward sweep: Blanka, Chun, Dhalsim, Fei, Gouken, Guile, Honda, Ken, Ryu, Sagat, Sakura, Viper, Zangief
-----Doesn’t work on: Akuma, Boxer, Cammy, Claw, Dan, Dictator, Fuerte, Gen, Rose, Rufus, Seth

–For the o-s against Gen, is timing the o-s hand to follow Gen’s ex walldive too hard to be practical for you guys?

–Are the following things punishable on block by anything (ie 720, 360, or a normal) after being fadc-ed toward out of?
-----Gen
----------Slaps: (punishable by what, if nothing then say safe)
----------Roll:
-----Rose
----------Reflect:

I was practicing o-s sweep yesterday. I couldn’t seem to catch Chun with it. I would always able to block the sweep after the back dash. Maybe I’m not doing it fast enough? I don’t know. It worked on sim and Sagat. I couldn’t get Ryu or Balrog either. My timing might just be off though.

iam having trouble learning giefs … safe jump splash o-s lariat… iam not understanding… like am I supposed to knock them down… .then do a safe jump and on block down … splash and press two punches or all three punches.? also if iam press all three punches for the ppp lariat to come out, why does two lp come out…?

also for the safe jump splahs o-s ex spd for abel… am i buffering the spd on block and then hitting lp or is it lpx2 then spd all on safe jump on block ?

also iam not really understanding the inputs for the short jump… like i know it’s up then up forward but is it more like a curve motion from up to upforward ? thanks

I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere but I finally found out about late techs… It makes ALMOST any jump-in lp tiger upperable after ex hand knockdown. If you change it so that your jump-in is late then they can tech early and delay srk.

I guess it’s still a guessing game… just not in your favor.

Couple of questions for UltraDavid, im a little confused when you guys say you can OS Safe meaty attacks what exactly does that mean? inst a safe attack unreversable? " cause its safe" or do you purposely miss time your attack to give the opponent an opportunity to reversal so that your option select can come out?

i mean if i time my splash correctly every time im always either going to make them block my splash, or they are going to mash out a DP and we will trade… can you go into more detail what exactly a meaty safe attack is?

Didn’t want to start a new thread about o-s so I figured i’d ask here

I’m trying to incorporate some of his more basic option selects into my game and I have a few questions about inputs (don’t have my copy with me atm)

When doing the meaty jab, o-s sweep does the input go like this:
d+lp, df+hk, d+lp

Now I’m assuming you are buffering the sweep into the jabs b/c you don’t want the inputs to overlap and priority to go to the heavy attack

Similarly the jab o-s ex hand
Do I buffer the ex hand into the jab like this? f+lp, d, df+lp+mp

I do meaty jab o-s sweep like:

d+lp, df+lk+hk (timing is fast like chaining)

If they block or get hit by the d+lp, then d+lk comes out. If they backdash, d+lp whiffs, and then df+hk comes out.

Hey Noob here.

Can someone explain how mechanically the St./cr. jab/short to nothing o-s ex hand works???

I CAN cancel the LK to EX GH, but when the LK whiffs, the EX GH comes out anyway…

Have a question about making specials unthrowable. Been trying to play with makoto in super and have been trying to get her oroshi (overhead chop) and karakusa (command grab) to become unthrowable on my wakeup. Now i’m gonna try and be as clear as i want to try and paint a perfect picture to get as accurate as possible input as I can so here goes…

I set the cpu to sweep me and then walk forward as soon as I get up the cpu does regular throw. Now when I try to make either special unthrowable, if reversal appears I always lose, so far out of about 70 tries between this morning and last night I have gotten karakusa to beat his throw maybe 4-5 times. Now my questions start with the input commands, I understand that when you guys try to make lariat unthrowable you press UP FIRST before 3 punch’s, should I also press up before inputting the commands for my specials? Or will the game let me input up-back or Up at the end of my command inputs and still register this as being in pre-jump state? Secondly how can I find out how many pre-jump frames makoto has? I read that gief has 6 and I would appreciate it if someone could help me pinpoint her prejump frames so I can get a better idea of how hard the difficulty is vs my execution, (just to help me keep my sanity lol).

Furthermore however, after many failed attempts with makoto I went to gief and picked akuma as the test dummy. I make akuma sweep me then do demon flip grab on my wakeup. I can confirm that if I get reversal I get grabbed so thats means I’m indeed too early, however the tricky thing I noticed is that there is a time where if I just press up of course gief jumps out of the grab, now if I use that same timing and lariat I still get grabbed but Reversal doesn’t show up. Does this mean that I am still too early trying to lariat? And if so how does that exactly work? I would like to think i’m not a complete idiot (lol everyone probably likes to think this) but I can’t seem to grasp the concept of the same timing when pressing up gets me out of the demon flip (of course its should) but when i add the punches for lariat I end up getting grabbed but reversal doesn’t pop up. Is it somehow possible to enter the command to late and get grabbed because your not considered “off the ground” yet?

Any help/guidance/tips would be greatly appreciated

Specials can’t be made unthrowable in 4. All that happens when you cancel your prejump frames into a special is that you have unthrowable prejump frames and then your move starts and it has whatever properties it always has. Here’s what happens when you cancel a prejump into a throwable normal:

prejump (unthrowable) for 4 frames; special move (whatever)

So essentially you’re making your move come out 4 frames slower and not really helping your actual move. Also, it’s hard. Not very useful in the end, imo.

But if you want to still… it can’t say reversal on the screen, you need to actually start your prejump frames first and that means the first thing you do when you get up has to be jump, not a special move. It’s a difficult timing to find. You can press up at the end of a special command to cancel your prejump frames, but that’s even harder to time. We don’t know much frame data for the new characters yet, but in vanilla 4 everyone had 4 frames of prejump except Dhalsim (3) and Zangief (6). Makoto probably has 4 too.

@ULTRA DAVID

since zangief jump frames has change and many other things, does any of these option selects works besides, the cr. lp os sweep and lp os ex hand ?

No idea man, I haven’t tried any of this stuff out. How about you try it and let us know?

cool, i will try it out and see what works and what doesn’t.

Upon initial inspection, you can still kara GH blanka horizontal balls. But it seems a bit tougher. Either his ball bounces farther away or the GH doesn’t go as far. Or when you block the ball, it doesn’t hit as deep anymore. It could be any of those factors. But if you do time it perfectly, you can still get him. It’s definitely tougher though.

hey ultra david thx for the info and quick response~ much appreciated~

Can you guys explain how exactly does the OS with KKK lariat works and vs what typical characters or situations its good for? Thanks

Ive been learning some option selects and I’m not sure if im doing it right. Im using St./cr. jab/short to nothing o-s ex hand in footsies and lets say my Short is blocked, should my ex hand come out?

Also Im not sure if im doing the inputs right. When I input the ex hand I usally hold my buttons down so the ex hand doesnt come out. If I do not hold the buttons down the ex hand comes out regardless of the Short hitting or not. Maybe im doing the ex hand too late?

if your short is blocked, yea the ex-hand comes out. You’re not supposed to be doing it in that range. The point is to hit your opponent’s extended limb with the short.
