Zangief Combos

dunno if its known or posted n this long thread but u can cross up hp splash to st mp xx lariat

it is character specific tho but works like a charm on sagat and certain characters if u do the splash pretty deep…u can also throw in a hp splash to st mp and dont do lariat follow up for a tick spd super or ultra

also for fanciness u can hp splash st mp xx lariat fadc to ex gh for 386 damage if i remember correctly

Does close S.MK xx into lariat??

This does work pretty well on sagat, but I’ve seen a few squeeze in an uppercut in between the mp and lariat (sometimes with lag it’s not as quick as it should be). I vary it and try to bait after the s.mp when they are uppercut happy.

nah i dont think so

and vs sagat the close st mp will link into lariat if u tap lariat immediately after hitting mp it cuts through the animation so u dont get the st mp stun

it fails vs the shotos and a couple others like elf and guile but works on chun li (only female it works on i dunno y) blanka rog if its deep bison if its deep blanka (although generally not useful to cross up blanka but maybe u surprise him 1x) honda and rufus…not sure about abel or dhalsim or seth

close st mk actually does xx into lariat but only 3p lariat will xx with close st mk vs sagat but works on chun as i just tried to

id stick with close st mp for linking into lariat as it seems to be more effective plsu u get same damage as if u did st mk

also note vs balrog if u cross up early and not deep in order to link the st mp to lariat u gtta use the 3k 1 (3p will work but wont combo into the end with ex gh) and move it forward as u press it the lariat will barely hit in time and it also gives u time to ex gh on follow up does 390 damage

if u simply j hp splash instead of crossing up u can just mp into lariat with ease

im sure itd work on other chars but its really character specific

edit - vs bison cross up splash to st mp can only be linked into 3p lariat not 3k but if u do splash st mp to 3k lariat on jump ins it will work

I hope they make more Zangief Chronicles.

Anyway, we want clothesline (3P) over lariat (3K) because 3P does more damage than 3K.

its only like a 10 damage differential…plus u recover quickly so say u screw up the timing at least ur not just sitting there spinning…plus with 3k u have the chance for a ex gh follow up if the lariat hit a lil late

but as a general rule id use the 3p lariat but its good 2 know ur character specific matchups and use 3k accordingly

example would be against blankas ultra

Forgive me if it was posted but

Splash ( 2H.P )>> Close M.K. >> EX Hand

It’s like 358 or something

…i have i quest…is there a certain way or trick/tip of doing jabX2 or kick into green hand…??
im not sure is if cuz i play cross handed but everytime i do it green hand comes out all late.im not sure if its my timing just way off or…???i can do jabX2 fdf p…but if i try jabx3, lk, the green hand just keeps coming out late…HOW R U GUYS DEALING WITH SETH…???

what u guys can do ( who is having trouble with the link )
cr.lp, cr.lp, st.lp, cr/st.lk xx EXFLAT seems to link easier that 3 crouching lightpunches

*** CAUTION *** it does miss sometimes, but do try it.

P.S - splash, st.mk/mp (close) xx EX FLAT is more damage than his main B&B, though its harder to hit confirm

The missing and maligned 4 hit

I haven’t seen any talk in here about the super dead simple 4 hit

Splash(or J.Hk)->s.mp->ex hand
110+90+160*0.8 = 328

328 dmg + 10 dmg for the J.Hk over the splash

I believe you can sub the jump in for a headbutt as well.

It’s damn near impossible to screw this up, you hit confirm the splash and put the rest in after. It’s a total noob combo, but sometimes the pride has to bow down in the face of the dmg numbers.

I’d rather do lariat simply because I get the knockdown, execution is def not an issue, and I keep my precious EX Bar.

I only bring it up because it outdamages a lot of the listed BnB combos for Gief.

how often do u use HK on jump in tho?
unless you are fighting against gief, HK jump in is usually not the first choice.
mk and hp are usually better choice to counter the anti-air.

real damage you want is from getup with gief. so what you do after knock down is more important i would think.

J.Hk to counter

Sagat’s HK is stuffed if timed properly, also the J.HK->c.mk tick SPD.

I personally use it when I know people are going to be attempting a sweep.

its not really a combo, but i have been practicing the jump HP > ultra.
since ultra allows some small amount of delay on input, even when HP hits, ultra hits after unthrowable frame goes away.
what i do is do j HP and right after, i input 2 circle, walk forward a tiny bit as i land and ppp to execute.
timing is bit hard and i can’t get this constantly enough for practical use.
and player can probably jump away but should work at a trick play sorta thing.

I’m with you on that. I’ve hit a wall with Gief and I just got back on track by simplifying my combos, getting more knockdowns which lead to more mixups.

Sometimes I’ll do a really dumbed down 2- hitter like X-up splash xxx KKK lariat. Then go to another X-up into knees, splash, empty jump into lariat for another knockdown or command throw/ultra.

Sometimes I do less damage when trying to do more (i.e. screwing up more damaging combos). :annoy:

I play like this too, but all the time. I get alot of hate mail about it too. But playing basic is a great style of play. Your if your Geif, your combos do great damage…sure they could be a tiny bit more if I actually used a more intricate combo, but my fail rate at comboing is 100% because they so easy. Mabey I’m setting the bar low, but it seems to have worked great for me. Gief’s footies + simple combos + mixups are deadly together.

Seems like more people are mistaking being good for being able to do crazy combos. But its really about winning with simplicity.

agreed.

The bnb is the bnb because it lets you hit confirm. You can’t really do that with splash, cr. lk, KKK lariat. Or simply splash, PPP lariat (I see a million terrible giefs do this online) You’re just going to be left spinning and getting punished. It’s the bnb for a reason and it’s really not that hard to pull off consistently. Plus if you see it getting blocked, you have the option to go into SPD. You can mix it up by ticking once, twice, or three times which makes the other guy have to guess even more. If he’s holding up back to try to jump out of your string, you can delay your string in the middle by a split second which will catch them trying to jump away. You can see Itabashi do this in his videos and catching people trying to jump away. If you find that they are mashing in between your strings, then just stop in the middle and let them throw out their SRK and punish accordingly. I do this all the time to mashers online. They’ll still catch me a few times due to lag causing my strings to mess up but it works for the most part. Of course, you can also end your strings with standing HK as if they are trying to jump away, it will catch them.
