Zachd.com/mvc2 video thread

Let us know how we can can help Preppy. I’m down to donate for my favorite site!

I’m not sure what the hell is going on, so I’m not sure where to start. I had set up a second server at a cost of $1100 (for about a year of service), but then they moved that and my primary account ($90/month) to a dedicated server ($120/month). I never got a refund for the second server despite sending a cancellation request. And I just got this out-of-cycle bonus bill without warning for “01/01/07 to 02/01/07 - Dedicated Server - 593.14GB Usage - $593.14”. I’m not even sure what the hell that means or how they arrived at that number. It’s an 80GB server, so it’s not disk space, and the bandwidth numbers don’t make any sense.

There were ~2000 downloads of the B5 DVD. That’s impressive.

Since this is non-deterministic billing, I’m not really sure how to proceed without incurring further/future wrath. It this is a one-time warning? What metric am I supposed to meet?

Sucks. I don’t know if this is a one-time problem or an ongoing problem that I will need a solution for.

Upon contemplation, if this is a permanent problem, I may go back to what I was doing before with a twist: have the 5GB of content as usual available to everyone, and then potentially have the other stuff either torrented (so we pool our resources) or hidden behind some sort of premium bullshit barrier (so that everybody doesn’t suffer when 1500 people who don’t post download everything). I can understand that 4+TB/month is ludicrous. I want to help out friends and community, and I don’t want to impose much/any barrier here - I’d like the average joe to be able to find good and interesting stuff. But having the average user downloading ~5GB of stuff a month isn’t really sustainable. Most of this seemed kind of special interest… but that shows how little I know.

I probably won’t know what’s going on in full until either the next billing cycle or until I talk to them. I kind of want to have a plan in place before I talk to them.

well dude, good luck with that… i will help out with donations as well, if needed… i have to admit , i redownloaded all the tricks of the trade videos last month because my computer crapped out on me…so i’m partly to blame

It ain’t my fault!!!:razzy: Btw I think it is a good idea to go back to 5GB of stuff at a time for now and torrents does sound nice, especially with something as big as a complete DVD. You can also take those favoriate player video packs and throw them into individual torrents as well. That way everyone not only gets but also has to give.

It’s probably cause your website is big in Japan now. lol

I think that Dhalsim DVD should be torrented as a whole file (assuming people are still downloading it).

Take my old magneto video down, it’s causing too much traffic[/arrogance]

But in all seriousness, don’t take it down lol

Anyone know the name of the song in the first Master Ken marvel vid?

Not sure which video you are referring to. Anyhow, the song in my first vid is: DJ Junk - going the distance.
For my 2nd, I used : The Chronicals of Narnia- Here Comes The King.

Maybe someone is direct linking to your videos for their own sites?

Preppy, I dont think the problem is the amount of stuff, but the amount of new stuff. I’ve never watched most of the stuff you brought up, including old stuff, so I downloaded dozens of gigs since you put all that stuff up. Basically, I get anything new (not chronologically new, but recently uploaded, and I think most users do the same. Not many people were around to download videos from past years…

IMO, you should just stop posting new content for a while and this may work out pretty well. Then, you do just slow uploads, maybe only the new stuff or, if traffic is really slow, you may build another player folder like the ones you’ve been doing.

Mind you that nobody remembers exactly which matches of Sanford or Duc they got, I think, so people will usually download it out if you create another folder. Its a good place to be careful and save some gigs.

when u coming to vegas?

Are there people direct linking to your files from other sites?

What are you looking for in terms of donations? I’d be happy to help.

I agree. I liked it before when you had a single update with the newest media rather than having an archive of massive video downloads and huge filesizes. Hell, your bill is bigger than the one from CV’s and we got more traffic.

Cheers!

Right, I didn’t know that people were going nuts on the archives because the stats program was broken. I figured a handful of people were cherry-picking files. Lesson learned. I’ll try to bring it back in some more moderated capacity, maybe. Bear in mind that there weren’t too many comments in the past couple months (maybe 1 a day, and then just people requesting stuff) - I really didn’t have any clue that things had gone that nuts.

Um. I really don’t have any idea at all about this yet. Since it’s all non-deterministic (I have no idea what they want/are expecting here), I’m not even sure where to start. I do not know what service I have right now, and thus I don’t know how I can establish any sort of sustainable plan. =P

Well if you wanted to give out old vids, there is always the free file sharing services. Out of all of them I recommend:

http://gigeshare.com/

They allow you to upload large files, the downloads are pretty good speeds, and they only delete your file after 90 days of inactivity.

Check out the faq if you’re interested: http://gigeshare.com/faq.php

That way you can stem some of the load of all the files you have, without eating anymore costs.

I’m planning on revamping the page and putting up footage this week. So it’s not too bad.

So far I am of course guessing until the next bill, but the free/"“member”" zones seem like the most viable long-term option, and then potentially if people want to do DVDs again (or any release over 1GB really), we can torrent those. knock on wood.

You could upload videos in special folders, like you did with JWong and the other players.

Instead of giving the link on zachd.com, however, you could give the URL only here. In this way you will be sharing only with people who read this thread. This will probably reduce the uploads while still having the videos available for people who are more involved with the community.

And I know you don’t like it, but you could also start to upload most things directly to You Tube, or at least the old things, and this would be easier on your bandwidth.

I’ve got some of them on Soapbox, but I hate Flash with a passion I reserve for no other technology. Flash is the stupidest piece of technology that ever touched the Internet. I get angry when I see people put anything I recorded up behind a Flash front-end.

I really really hate YouTube (I hate Flash, I hate that they don’t let you download the videos, I hate their quality, I hate their interface, and I hate how they handle user and provider interactions). YouTube is everything that I hate about video providers and why I started doing this and running my site in the first place.

I’ve got plans. I’ll likely rearrange the site this week and make things simpler. The thread-only-links idea might not be a bad idea for a while. =\

Soapbox seems to just be converting the wmv to flash and/or using flash for the player in some way, is there a wmv option, or are you saying your putting them on soapbox despite not liking flash?
