You’d definitely be wrong then.
You cant punish headbutts with lunge if you are crouched
big update coming in the next few days, sorry for the lateness, been super busy doing stuff for my open house tomorrow.
How should I approach the Cammy match up?
I played a very good one earlier and got beaten pretty badly, I kind of had troubles getting in because of some of her long range normals.
Apparently she also has an unblockable on yun (and yang).
Anyone have any advice against rose? I’m absolutely free to her
Yun vs Rose:
For me, I consider this match up to be a 50-50, maybe a bit more in Yun’s favor. It’s easy to react with a HP shoulder when she throws fireballs, and closing the space with your dive kicks should not be that much of a difficulty. One thing to keep note is that she has strange hitbox properties like Blanka, where when you try and do a certain BnB, it will whiff when they’re crouching. So these are the following BnBs I suggest for consistency:
- cr.lp/cr.lk, st.lp, cr.mp, st.mp xx MK/HK Dragon Kick, depending on whether she is standing or crouching, respectively.
- cr.lp/cr.lk, st.lp, cr.mp, cr.mk xx MP Lunge Punch
- cr.mp, cr.mp, st.mp xx MK/HK Dragon Kick (similar for standing and crouching scenario)
- cr.mp, cr.mp, cr.mk xx MP Lunge Punch
Most of you already know that she is a frame trapping powerhouse, but now its time for her to feel what she’s been dishing out to the cast back in Super. You have many frame trap setups in your arsenal - these are some that I like to use in general, and not only for Rose:
- Walk up, st.lk ticks, with the occasional st.lk xx Palm/Feint for mixup
- After getting in, jab to cst.mp (note that I said close standing MP; this move puts you at +2 on block and it’s a 2-3 frame trap depending on what jab you use. It’s an amazing frame trap because on counter-hit, you can link it to a far st.mp, cr.mk, or st.lk. I’m pretty sure you can imagine all the possibilities from here)
- st.lp, st.lk, st.mp TC xx LP shoulder after a jab or two
- cr.mp, walk up to delayed cr.mp
- Overhead on counter-hit can link to jab (something good to keep in mind)
There are many more traps that I could list, but there are just too many to write down.
Once you’re in, you should have this match set easy, but don’t get too comfortable because she can still frame trap you, regardless; don’t go pushing buttons without thinking.
On knockdown, she has the following options, and I’ll list the punish right after:
Backdash --> OS LP Lunge punch
Wake-up U2 --> Meaty cr.mp
EX Soul Spiral --> Block, and punish accordingly
EX Soul Throw --> This is where you’re getting too dive kick happy, so just do an early dive kick on their wake up to bait it.
I’ll write more about this later on.
Anything I’m obviously missing vs Ken?
- Can punish his blocked f.mk with c.lp, s.lp, palm bnb. Timing is pretty strict if just Yun’s sweep range.
- Getting zoned by HDKs. Dives are being baited because Ken mixes up speed forcing me to MK/HK dive to evade into Sho.
I’m still generally new to SSFIV. I’m only playing it now because I played a SA1 Yun in 3S.
Sagat
I’ve found it necessary to fight Sagat at the edge of his st hk. The perfect place being were you can crouch under it while holding down back without it making contact and where his st mk whiffs also. At this range you can punish most of his pokes.
The only pokes that he has that beat your st mk are cr hp/mp but you can punish these with your st mp or cr mk into lp.
Your st mk is a great tool in this match up. You can use it to easily punish his whiffs without the recovery of your st hk, hp, or mp. You can also use it to punish the start up of spammed tigers. At this range you can also nj hk dk low tiger shots. If you are doing all of this well expect tiger knees to reset the spacing especially ex tiger knees. You can punish theses with with lk dp/U1. You really want to need to push him to the corner. Once there he is at your mercy. Generally anywhere outside of that range I mentioned or the corner he’s at the advantage.
Sagat, Rose, Oni sections updated.
Any advice on how to fight guy??
I play a pretty good Guy everyday, so I’ll put in my two cents.
If he does Bushin Flip you can use C.LK to crouch under it for a nice punish of your choice. If he does J. DMP(elbow) and is right above your head you can CS.MK into MP lung for a nice chunk of damage. If he is a bit too far you can just do a LK DP. On wakeup Yun’s C.LK will crouch under his EX tatsu and you can get a nice punish afterwards. I like to OS lunge while I do this on his wakeup just in case he backdashes.
If he knocks you down and does the Bushin flip trick on your wakeup DO NOT try to challenge it with a DP or blocking. It’s very similar to Cammy’s Hoolgian throw trap and will catch you when you’re getting up. The way to avoid it is to do C.MP to make it whiff or knock it out of the sky.
The key, in my opinion, is to apply a lot of pressure on him before he can do it to you. His “get off me” options are very limited and he can’t do anything without EX meter. If he manages to bring you to the corner DO NOT panic. Just wait for a way to escape, but don’t do anything desperate and obvious like a random DP. He can punish you with his TC and throw you right back into the corner. His corner pressure game is amazing and is the reason why all his attacks put you in the corner.
Sorry if this was all worded funny… I’ve had a little to drink tonight.
Can someone post up a guide on Vs. Gief/Hawk? Grapplers annoy me, especially people who just circle/PPP mash on reaction to seeing a block string.
I’m pretty sure you can’t punish a step kick on block once Ken blocks. I think it’s just a slower match. Hard to get momentum on him but that should be the goal. Force him to burn meter and take risks.
st mp has better recovery than st mk up close and almost the same from a distance with higher reward. st mk can be whiff punished pretty easily actually. I like most of the other stuff you said. Neutral jumping at specific ranges is pretty good stuff. I feel like this is a tough matchup for Yun. Like… I don’t think Yun has advantage. You spend a lot of effort trying to get in. By the time you get in Sagat has meter to keep you honest on pressure. And he’s out of pressure for free.
THawk-Yun’s pokes ranging in priority from highest to lowest in this match up:
St hk- counters Thawks cr mk, st/cr lp, and condor spire.
St hp- counters Thawks cr hp and cr mk
St mk- use this to throw off timing between your 2 main pokes in this match up
Cr mk- use this to counter far st hk. It doesn’t touch you crouching holding down back
Fwd hp- use this sporadically. To punish jump ins or when you feel he’s hesitant and you want more space.
St mp- when he’s hesitant/desperate and you think he’ll use focus to get through your other pokes
In most match ups st mp will be your main poke but vs THawk it takes a back seat.
The main reason being its reach isn’t far enough to be effective and it gets stuffed easily by Thawks main pokes.
You should strictly play footsies in this match, but you can rush down a bit when doesn’t have meter.
When he jumps at you don’t wait for him so you can dp. Meet him air to air with hk/hp.
His condor dive especially the ex version messes with the timing of your dp making it not as reliable.
Whenever you see condor spire only use hk to beat it everything else trades/misses or isn’t fast enough.
Stick to footsies and don’t get knocked down and this match up is yours.
Any tips on the Yun and Yang matchup
I’ll start putting up more thought on matchups since I have some time:
Guile-
First- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnJdcypJ_bw
This is huge for your mixup. More in a little bit.
It makes no sense to rush in on Guile. He has way too much shit to beat your divekick entries, good punishes for shoulders (until you get ex) and all around superior spacing at first. Trying to walk in is difficult because guile is a charge character that can hold his ground really well. So just bide your time. Build ex and hold your own ground for a while. If you’re doing it right you’ll have a bar before he does at which point the match changes a little. He can’t spam booms anymore due to an ex shoulder that gets you a knockdown and good wakeup pressure. Start walking in then. From mp range you’re in a psychologically uncomfortable place for Guile. If he has ex try to make him waste it. Also, if he’s not charging down you can neutral jump to work towards a divekick entry. If he is then stay just out of flash kick range and do it anyway (sparingly). The whole point of this is to get yourself in at which point you have way more options than he does. Work for a knockdown and setup wakeup divekick. The vid I posted shows it being done from a fwd throw but it can also be done from a techable knockdown once timed correctly (and spaced and with the right kick). The important thing about the setup in the video though is that it is an ambiguous crossup. Guile must hold towards in order to block. Along with your command grab and the option of doing nothing at all but staying in an intimidating range Guile is fucked if you get in close. And that’s basically the game you play. If Guile gets out then good shit to him. He’s once again at advantage and you spend time working your way in again, difference being now you both have meter. Played right you’ll have life lead forcing him to burn his first.
All of this being said, I do not believe Yun has the overall advantage here. A mistimed/ poorly spaced ex shoulder can lead to a hurt Yun and a reset situation. It requires precision and patience but once Yun gets in he can go apeshit.
Need help with the Cammy matchup.
vs. T Hawk, stay just outside of condor spire range if he does it whiff punish with st.MP~st.HP~B.HP TC when far away build meter HE HAS NOTHING TO DO ABOUT IT if he jumps Nj.HP or Fj.HP him DONT`T upkick you could get condor dived for it. try to place footsies outside of spire range use U2 to punish any mistake he does
Yun vs Sim.
Offense/defense tips? How to get in etc? Played a sim and lost quite a few matches already. But its my 2nd day playing yun. Lag also didn’t help but I’m hoping to make this the best known matchup for me. I think I divekicked too recklessly and also ran into too many of his button presses.
Need some tips on which ultra to use and how to escape yoga fire/teleport crossups/fake crossup and which pokes to use.
I found myself getting grabbed a lot randomly. And I dont know how i can do a divekick os lunge or something, it kept fucking up.
Any tips versus Claw besides the medium lunge punch?
