I never said they were identical. I’m quite aware they’re different and I’m not calling for Rufus nerfs or anything stupid, but Rufus’s divekicks are much harder to punish and do not have nearly the height restriction of Yun’s, making it frustrating for a beginner. You could have said something useful, but you just start mocking the first person in sight. Excellent.
I know Rufus is free without meter. But I’ve just started Yun when my previous characters have been Abel and Dudley, then I started re-learning the game as Ryu. I’d prefer not to be completely free to Rufus while I’m learning the character, especially. So in what ways is Rufus free to Yun without meter, and how do I get him to expend it?
My point of mockery was the fact that they aren’t even remotely similar if you look past the fact that they both have dive kicks. They don’t have a similar playstyle at all.
2 random videos of Kaz and Wong, 1 win and 1 loss.
Things to note:
Rufus unable anti air Yun effectively unless with Wong making a good read. Be unpredictable with your jumps or you will lose here.
Meaty clk/cmp/clp on Rufus wakeup. Kaz makes excellent use of command grab early game because Wong knows Rufus cant do anything.
DK cross up, followed by throw or another DK/neutral jump. Offense that pressures Rufus into using Ex messiah.
Ex lunge, Rufus lacks 3 frame normals therefore its pretty much free to get in on him. Forces ex messiah.
-Delayed jab blockstrings to fish for counter hits. Mix this with throws. Forces Ex messiah
-Anti airing with c.mp, add this button to your generic crouch tech to counter Rufus DK/throw mix ups (not really demo’d in video).
Can’t believe I actually signed in for this.
Rufus and Yun is a funny one, once learnt it’s a pretty smooth sailing matchup but it all comes down to either playing absolutely safe or ‘risky’ per say.
Far:- Yun can HP palm, build meter etc. trades with cr HP sometimes you get beat oh well. Ex lunge. Dive kick like a mad man.
Mid Range:- Yun’s st MK is very useful anti airing our fat friend even if he alters the height of his dives, alternating between LK upkicks and air to air neutral HP really frustrate him as he’ll be looking to air to air HK you. Ultra is a great anti air too once you train them to meet you air to air.
Close:- Rufus has a lovely hitbox that allows yun to perform lovely combos after command throw (cr MPx2 st MP xx whatever). Simply mixing up between
Chaining cr LK’s from far
Back dashing after a few chains and then uppercutting/ultra’n the whiffed messiah
Throw
Command throw
After a blocked dive kick, LK/MK dive kick again to cross him up (depending on height? Messiah will whiff completely or one hit, he tries to dive he gets hit, he tries to move he gets tagged), are enough to frustrate rufus.
On defence just having a 2.6666 frame cr LP, uppercut and great backdash are more than enough to scare rufus by purely mixing them up.
You’ve got Balrog jabs, Ryu uppercuts and Rose backdash. That’s how Rufus looks at you on knockdown. Abuse them moderately.
I won’t go far into the matchup with safe jumps, punishments, ultra setups and the like because I’m pretty sure they’re about but all in all Yun can dictate the match because he controls the flow of the match, just having ex bar scares rufus from mid range too.
The general gist of the matchup is you’re an annoying fly that packs a wallop but withers away and pecks at Rufus’ life bar or you can go in guns blazing and overwhelm him (watch out for wake up ultras and messiahs).
Next week is my Rufus practice week so any other things let me know.
Thanks, people. I just started Yun and and switched to stick recently so every matchup is a bad matchup right now, but this one seemed like it shouldn’t be.
Damn that’s actually really smart. I had a few time where fHP did anti air that way but I never thought of using it seriously.
They must be other application to this tech.
I try and do that when i can but its so slow you have to pretty much anticipate the jump in/elbow instead of react lol
But it is pretty damn sexy, it can beat a lot of NJs and stuff too
In prep for ultra, even though hugo is bad, how bad (if any) will the matchup be? I haven’t really watched any ultra footage of hugo so my standard of him is what the internet has said about him.
His U2 can catch Yun from mid screen jumping which is quite scary and his command HP has armor and is meh against dives but other than that?
After command throw double MP, fuzzy guard setups, st MP shoulder x into itself spam, if he tries to jump out of the corner with air grab very easy walk over to him punish st MP.
He can’t really stop the assault of Yun and get his own game going (at first glance).
His ex kick grab and U2 stop all jumping from Yun so it’s quite a weird one lol you’ll win it because we’re Yun
I was watching Yubiken’s steam and this yun player had a little streak going. Against Hugo, his divekick pressure got blown up with anti air grabs and ultra. As soon as he stopped jumping, hugo became free. Then he would start jumping again for lk divekick to bait the ultra. Hugo needs to try so hard to get in and keep momentum against yun. Also, st.mp seemed to stuff hugo’s poke attempts on several occasions. I predict 7:3 yun. Or 6:4 rather, because we can’t jump.
Does anyone want to make a new thread for when Ultra comes out? I feel it would be good to not have to dig through this thread just to find his recent matchup information (hell I’ll do it if no one else wants to…)…
I don’t see anything in this thread about Dudley. It’s hard to get in on him, and even then I don’t have the advantage, because they’re Dudley and I’m just a bad Yun player.
Nah it’s easy to fight dudley, but i havent played ultra yet so… this info might be outdated.
If dudley likes to throw fierce and f.fierce, you can whiff punish with far mp xx and s.fp on reaction. Cr mk is your best friend in this matchup, but don’t get to predictable with it, otherwise you’re eating his sweep and have to deal with the mixups that follow. I don’t recommend going for any xup dive kicks unless you got the read and know hes gonna quickrise.
And when you’re on the offensive mixup your dive kicks with delayed dives and remember to fight on the ground.
Found some weird interactions with hugo in the corner, if the ultra hits him in the corner looks like he is so big you can’t do the lp. shoulder into dash punch follow up. His body pushes yun too far out. So in the corner you are forced to follow up with dash punch after ultra.
Looks like j.mk as a cross up is corner specific from playing around. Left corner tends to not cross up etc, will have to look more into it.
