Nice. I love his use of rocks and his execution, but I’m not a fan of how a majority of his offense is started from a jump. That’s just my personal opinion though.
Yeah, that’s kind of how I felt. Oh and I couldn’t believe he was using that voice, lol. Man…it’s always so hard to listen to.
Just that whiny sounding, “HAHA!”. Cody has a great jump-in, in my opinion, but meh…I think the match could have went in his favor had he just stuck to his ground game. Maybe that’s just me though
Man I’ll be at Devastation probably going 0-2 with Cody.
I’m not gonna sleep and wanna get as drunk or high as possible. I’m gonna try and do dumb combos so hopefully there is vids later for me to laugh about.
man all the videos and tutorials i’ve seen here seem like good references for me as an up-and-coming Cody player. I’ve been maining Guile, but Cody seems too good to pass up. His style and all around attitude needs to be represented more in my opinion. I’m going to be working my ass off trying to get some of his combos down before my local store’s next tourney in July.
you could have at least tried it, no need for an upset meme.
Hey Mno how did you end up doin at Devastion? Any vids up yet?
Nice spacing and great punishes from this Cody: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=i8600011&aq=f
I had watched the first videos when this was originally posted, but didn’t have time to respond. Now I came back to respond to find that more of his videos have been uploaded, so I watched the rest.
I like this guy’s overall style. It’s similar to the style I’ve been focusing on transitioning to: doing less at mid range, zoning more, etc. He also approaches some specific matchups the same way I do, most notably Guile, Honda and Ryu. Hawk too I guess, but I don’t think there’s much room for variation in how to play that matchup.
Some things to note:
: He basically plays this matchup the same way I do right now which sucks to see :shake:. Basically building meter (super slow) matching Sonic Booms, and then guessing an EX RK sometime when you expect a Sonic Boom, use the knockdown to (hopefully) get a lifelead, and then try to sit on it for the rest of the round. Sucks.
: Note the O-S he uses in the first round. cl.LK OS MK RK. cl.LK was something I actually had on my list of things I wanted to look at, but as soon as I saw this, I went instantly into training mode, and I’ve been using it to great effect since then (which you might have seen on the stream last night).
Let me break it down. First off, how the O-S works. cl.LK is not special cancelable. That means you can input a meaty cl.LK on their wakeup, and input a MK RK as if you were canceling it, but it will only come out if the cl.LK whiffs. Therefore, this O-S is mainly tailored toward characters (or players) who commonly back dash to escape pressure, rather then reversal.
Now, a little more in depth. cl.LK is 4f startup, tying it with c.LP, so you lose nothing there. Though it is not chainable into anything, it is also +4 on hit, allowing you to link a c.LP. And though this would be a 1f link, the icing on the cl.LK cake is that it has 4 active frames, which is 1 more then c.LP. This means when you use it meaty on their wakeup, it can be up to a 4f link to c.LP, making it extremely easy. I’m still getting comfortable with it, so I’m not used to hit confirming it all into a c.MP yet, but the O-S itself is extremely effective.
: He does another version of the same O-S, except with Ultra 2 instead of MK RK. This is a higher risk higher reward O-S though, because if the Viper had done a reversal BK (or EX BK), or maybe even HP TK, he would have hit Viper out of the air and not got the full Ultra. Also, depending on the exact timing, there’s even a chance he might have hit Viper out of the air at the end of the back dash, though it might be guaranteed on Viper, and that aspect will be very character specific, because back dashes vary greatly between characters. Still another option to look at, just much more character specific.
One general thing I liked was his use of cl.HP, which is another tool I had already started using, though I’m using it less then he is. It’s basically hit confirmable on its own, but is also +1 on block, so it can be used as a (very weak) frame trap as well. He did multiple CH cl.HP, c.HP combos throughout the videos, but at the same time, he did that same string on block multiple times, and on regular hit, leading me to believe he’s not confirming the counter hit, and simply using the string regardless if he suspects it will counter hit.
Overall, I like his playstyle, the only things I wasn’t satisfied with was his (lack of) anti-air, and his combo choices. Lots of cl.HP or c.HP straight into specials on punishes, and lots of combos into RKs instead of HP CU, where he could have gotten the full hits of the CU. In some matches (I think a Rufus one), he also had Ultra 1, landed some jabs standing, but didn’t combo to HK RK FADC Ultra, when it would have ended the round.
Still a good Cody overall, just some areas I think he could improve on, just as I have my own.
I did something neat at the end of the second round.

It’s i8600011 again, but just gotta say, option select U2 from cl. LK? Foxy stuff. He’s a fun player to watch, but a big pet peeve of mine specific to his playing is that he doesn’t hit confirm his counterhit cl. HP a lot, he just follows through with an unsafe cr. HP xx HP Upper. But anyways, everyone has flaws, just a personal pet peeve of mine. Check out that whole channel, it’s got some decent to great Japanese PSN matches, although you guys’ve probably found it out already.
Any way to get a hold of the Sabre (among other Codys ofc) matches from Evo?
yeah I’m going to second sabre videos. After hearing about him at evo I definitely gotta check him out.
i came in here looking to see sabre’s performances at evo again.
before seeing him, i had no idea cody’s offense was so fluid.
awesome to watch!
I didn’t get to catch sabre but the guy to watch is Ryan hunter. He plays a really good zoning game. I wish I got to see sabre but I know Ryan got far in his bracket. Well I think it was Him younger guy with glasses.
i got 33rd. lost to RB, the taiwan rufus player that made top 16(i played him first round). ran through the whole bracket. then fought buktooth to win, then lost to LI joe’s sagat by a pixel in the 3rd match, 3rd round, to qualify. disappointed. but oh well
I just noticed something back when they announced the alpha characters… Codys Cr. MK went a longer distance…
Sabre why are there almost no videos of you playing Cody? I think everyone in this forum can agree this needs to change immediately! Please post videos!
Thank you.
2 very good Cody’s with some great combos and pressure.

P.S. Thanks MrSNK for the vids. In the future though can you tag your videos with ssfiv or street fighter or the character being played or something besides the name of the two players.
