Your Opinion on Mainstream Music

The 80s is when mainstream music REALLY went down hill. Honestly the best decade for music was the 70s. Many people who like the 80s probably don’t remember them, and are completely nostalgic. But in terms of quality, there is so much stuff from the 70s to discover. I mean from any genre. The 70s really was a musician decade. I don’t care if you like R & B, Funk, Rock, Metal, Folk, etc. You will just straight up LOVE the 70s music if you appreciate musicianship. The 80s was the beginning of corporate manufactured music. It has just gotten so bad by 2000, but it started in the 80s

Nomak, Nujabes, Blazo, and Ayur are some good places to start.

Manufactured music was a reality from the 50s and 60s. Sure the 70’s was a really good decade for music, but let’s not fool ourselves.

If nothing else, New Wave, Gothic Rock, and Industrial all came into their own in the 80s (although not particularly originated there).

Popular music is always depressing, spend some time browsing through this.

there is a reason why the Rock in Opposition movement was born in the 70’s

Have you heard half of the top 100 in the 70s vs the 80s. Just compare 1972 to 1982, it’s a world of difference in musicianship. And I’ve never been a fan of industrial or gothic, so the 80s is bust for me. I know some people get hard over it, but I’ve never been into it.

i know that im gonna be hated because of this, but even when im a metal fan, i really hate the 80’s metal with passion (almost all the 80’s music tbh, with some exceptions of course).
perhaps its because many “metal” heads live only on the past, like, if you look any top whatever of the best metal songs of all time (lol), the list would have mostly 80’s songs and one or two of the 90’s, bonus points because it would only have the 4 usual suspects, any person outside the metal scene would think that the meta as a genre has not produced anything new since 1992

Interestingly 72 had higher highs and lower lows. There was no “My Ding-a-ling” in 1982 :stuck_out_tongue:

And I don’t want either of you to get the wrong idea, the 70s were probably the best decade in general for music like… ever. Still, the 80s simply weren’t trash.

The '50s were arguably a nadir though.

Eh, I don’t know. I personally think 80s metal is like 70s R & B, or 90s rap. That genre was probably at it’s best in the 80s. Now that’s in terms of pure and classic heavy metal. Now days, it’s more about death metal and black metal. But pure heavy metal kicked ass in the 80s. And I love artist who kind of keep this style. I personally saw too much attempts from older bands to mix grunge in their music in the 90s. For example, I thought all of Iron Maiden 90s alums were weak, like Fear Of The Dark. Even Black Sabbath 90s stuff was a little iffy, and their last album “Forbidden” was amongst the worst metal albums in the 90s.

But I guess to each their own. I can understand not liking arena and hair metal like Poison or Cheap Trick. They were pretty garbage.

It’s funny, I hated hair metal so much back in the day, I’ve kind of come to terms with the better examples though.

in my opinion its more metalcore, alternative metal, and nu-metal (which technically isn’t metal at all). The metal these days aren’t THAT bad imo, I’m not really used to the old metal sound, but I can understand why a lot of people prefer the old metal.

i dont know man, the 80’s have a few good exponents, i wouldnt deny that but when you listen shit like do you really want to hurt me, and the worst part, that folks think about it as a classic… ugh.
the major part of the 80’s music wasnt that good, perhaps the only good thing about the 80’s is that its were the metal music started to grow

how is this song “ear bleeding”? It doesn’t even sound THAT bad.

Well again, New wave hit its peak, and industrial AND alternative also really started to grow.

Skinny Puppy? the '80s
Front 242? the '80s
Depeche Mode? the '80s
The Cult? '80s
Sisters of Mercy? '80s
Thrill Kill Kult? late '80s.

I could keep going if you like :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: Hell, overhyped or not, you’re not human if you don’t like Thriller and Bad.

The best part of the 80s was definitely the emergence of rap and metal. Now when you start digging, you’ll find some good stuff. I personally like early 80s rap songs where the song can last for like 10 minutes.

I can understand why some metal fans wouldn’t like the 80s stuff. It may sound a bit "outdated’ to them. I know when I started listening to metal in the mid 90s, I really didn’t like the 80s sound. But now it’s pretty much the only metal I’ll listen to these days. I mean I’ll listen to the odd death metal band here or there, but I love that classic style. I think Blaze Bayley is really good at having that classic feel to his music while staying modern. He’s worth checking out.

I find myself listening to country more than anything when it comes to mainstream stuff. At least it’s like real music n shit and it’s always playing on everybody’s cars at the car dealership I work at. LOL.

Most new rap and stuff is just really boring to me. The old stuff or the underground hip hop is really all I can listen to unless I’m drunk at a club/party.

Otherwise I just listen to old smooth and acid jazz, breakbeat, house and game music.

I know. Doesn’t stop me from liking some of her songs. I doubt you’ve heard anything but her tv songs though.

Cue singing Steeeeeveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen

id like to know what you listen to. Maybe some trashy rap, or fucking gay metal

See that will get me hating. Modern country/rock fusion is the ultimate corporate garbage. I hate that shit so hard.

Your Cheatin’ Heart is kind of hard to listen to, but at least it’s not so carefully manufactured.

i dont know man, perhaps its true on usa, but other countries are more diverse on their metal scenes when it comes about genres and sub genres
one thing that i noticed though, is that there arent to much pure bands around, you have progressive heave, or melodic heavy, but not so much pure heavy metal bands, i give you that, but that is also true for almost other metal genre and sub genres, pure back, pure death, pure doom, etc; and tbh imo, is not a bad thing
as for iron being weak, a friend of mine that is an iron maiden geek, says that many feel that way because blaze bayle, he says that many hated him when he was on maiden, though when he went solo, many started to like him :looney:

and

I never understood metal, it sounds like a bunch of people screeching and making noises. It kind of grates my ears and puts me in a bad mood whenever I try listening to it for some reason
