I’d disagree with that. Makoto, Dudley and Ibuki are all “skewed” character designs in that they are outrageously good at some things, but downright terrible at other things. This was also the case in 3S, but that game had a whole different risk / reward dimension to it that it did not matter nearly as much. There’s no point getting into semantics, but in a game where Dudley flat out can’t jump and can’t fish for parries, it greatly effects his ability to get in and utilise his greatest strengths. 3S is a game where the match momentum can change in the blink of an eye. The SFIV engine is far more formulaic and rigid in comparison.
I agree with the change you suggested though, that would be a big help to him!
'sup, I’m pretty much the only Dudley mainer from The Lone Star State.
Though I hope I’m not. I’d would to see more TX Dudleys here.
I haven’t played against anybody up on here except Mellow and Liquid but that was waaaaaaaay back mid-June… I think?
But Mellow have had some awesome matches.
I have been a fan of Dudley since 3rd Strike. For the longest time Sagat, was my main and my favorite character up until 3rd Strike.
Do you have color 6 (white, black & red) and You Have no Dignity!! coat grab pose.
Welcome to my world!! I know my execution still needs work, but I cannot tell you how many times lag has hampered my timing, links, reversal and anti-air attempts.
This seems to be SSFIV law, that mo matter what type of connection it is green or yellow, there’s always a lag spike that screws up a match.
I’m a Chun player back in the vanilla days. When Super came out I started to care about her less and less. It started to spoil my game and I was just getting tired of it. Since I never sit on charge with her anyways, but do rushdowns I decided to try out Dudley. He’s been good to me. I’m actually hoping playing more characters would reignite my love for Chun-Li and give me a new perspective in using her after trying my hands at different playstyles. Dudley is looking to become my main though in end. I’d love it if you someone could critique my bad Dudley play in my youtube videos featured in my sig.
Unless I fight a Bison or Dhalsim I’m going all Dudley.
I’ll have to counter pick those two with Pink Dudley.
Theres just way I can win with Honey Nut Dudley.
I played only Dudley at SVB. But I tell you what, after using Dudley in a tournament, you think to yourself “why!!?!”
Dudley is good if you can read your opponent, and know their playstyle. If you come across an opponent for the first time, it’s hard to use Dudley as he’s not really a “safe” character per se. You need to force the issue and take risks!
I used to use Ryu in SF IV, and got to quite a few top 8’s / top 4’s. No such luck with Dudley, even though I feel I am better with Dudley than with Ryu! Ryu is just a well balanced tournament character whereas Dudley isn’t.
My attendance on here has been erratic due spotty internet, but im trying to be as active as possible. I also just realized why i’ve been losing so much the past few days. Over the summer break i was playing on nothing but an old CRT. Crude, but effective, im ussually kicking some ass online. I get back up to tallahassee with my wonderful HDTV and all of the sudden im dropping my links and im losing to stupid spam shit i would have destroyed over the summer. Last night i found out that my TV lags and thats why my links kept getting dropped, cause i switched back over to a crt. GLad to know it wasn’t me starting to suck all of a sudden, anybody got any fixes for it? im on a PS3 with an HDMI cable that puts the PS3 at 1080i.
Im from Texas, i just started playing dudley about 3 weeks ago as my main, although ive been to busy to be on the scene here in Texas im making an effort to start going to more Tourneys so hit me up, i also play a mean viper.
Both statements are true, in my opinion. When you’re playing in tournaments, most good players will normally play conservatively and safely. With Dudley, once you can clock onto the opponent’s habbits, you can take advantage and alter your gameplan to dictate proceedings. However, that is easier said than done, especially as it’s so tough with him to get in on the opponent in the first place. With Ryu, one throw sets up a safe jump opportunity, and his general moveset allows him to play very safely without having to take risks.
With Dudley, once you score that first knockdown (if you score it!), then you need to know what the opponent’s habbits are. Are they smart and block? Do they like to reverse? Do they like to dash back? Are they itchy crouch-tech types? Etc… Even then, if you read the opponent correctly, you’ll score another knockdown and the same situation presents itself again. But in SSFIV, there are more options that you need to consider than in 3S, and a wrong read can cost you the round, for example SRK FADC Ultra. In 3S, Dudley had his rose, which meant that after one Corkscrew Blow, you forced most characters into a straight up 50/50 between high / low and eating another Corkscrew if they guessed incorrectly. That in combination with the ability to parry, a very solid moveset and high damage output meant that he was a force to be reckoned with and could legitimately win tournaments, even if he was not a top tier character.
SSFIV generally favours “solid” characters that do not require large amounts of risk taking. There are of course exceptions, with Rufus being a prime example, but the exceptions normally have something that makes them stand out, for example Rufus has EX Messiah Kick on top of his excellent offence.
I love using Dudley as he is very fun to use and can really make a crowd hype when you start unleashing the beatdown. However, I don’t think he is a viable tournament winning character. I am hoping that someone proves me wrong, and I guess that Marn is probably the most likely to demonstrate this. But for right now, I can’t see it.
Thanks, by the way do you still want those videos uploaded? I’ve been a little busy trying to get into Akuma because I’m trying to find a secondary. Let me know.
Nice to meet you man, and I don’t plan on attending any tournments. I’ll probally get killed, and they don’t allow controllers to be used…( I think!?). Plus I haven’t heard of any tournaments be held here in Houston or anywhere else in the state?
Do I still want those videos uploaded? **YES!! Yes, plz!! **
And speaking of developing a secondary, Adon is pretty much my official second, but I really want to get back into Sagat again and re-develop him and get him back to B rank.
I was playing around last night and I found out that I completely forgot how to play anyone else. I’ve been playing Dudley that long that I forgot the timing and combos with Balrog (SF4 main) Bison, Guile (Dabbled with in SF4 and at the beginning of SSF4) and Guy (who I played for the first week or so of SSF4).
I’m gonna try to learn every character a somewhat decent amount now in hopes it makes my game stronger.
This actually happened to me the other night…took me a couple of rounds before i could utilize Chun like i used to be able. Dudley’s playstyle just doesn’t translate well to other character, ESPECIALLY characters that are of the charge variety. Completely different mindset.
I’ve been toying with slip jab OS lp. mgb and empty duck. Throw in a slip jab xx strong if you’re in range. It helps a little but this matchup is still hard as hell. I’d really only CC sumo splash if it’s ambiguous, otherwise I’d just FA.
I finished two tourneys in the past month with him. Got top 24 at quake con (lost to Jan) and top 12 at Dallas bar fights (lost to a really good Guile).
Thanks cHaotix. Currently I feel that this is actually Dudley’s hardest match-up. Hopefully someone will point me in the right direction to counter him, but it feels like a huge uphill battle to me. It’s just so hard to consistently maintain the momentum in this match. It feels as if you need lots of good guesses in succession to really trouble Honda.
