Umm, I think U2 shuts cammy up way better, works as anti air and with light duck you can punish spikes and such as well as with U1.
Wouldn’t you say this is a pretty good reason to choose U1? If a good Ryu is no longer using his sweeps or hadokens, you’ve just shut down two strong aspects of his game. Removing fireballs from Ryu’s moveslist is not insignificant.
I have to agree with this. I’ve gotten to the point where I use U1 against all shotos because of this. A Ryu who is extremely paranoid about using his major zoning tool is a lot easier to deal with. Even if I never get a shot at using it for a projectile punish I could always use it after a crumple or even a blocked shoryuken if you can get the timing right.
And totally off topic for it’s abilities and usage. But it looks awesome. Rolling Thunder makes me feel awesome when I land it. :3
yup, chosing U1 to make ryus second guess which tactics to use once you get U1 making U1 worth chosing, even if you don’t use it during a match, the threat is still going to be there once you acquire it during a match
- learn to do st.HK buffered EX MGB to counter poke limbs and get in at the same time
- absorb fireballs to charge up U1 quicker so they’ll be scared to fireball if your at punishable range
- you’ll lose if you wait TOO long to get in cuz those pokes add up
- if your in range of cr. HP you can FA and release on limb retracting,dash in and punish, start up oki game
- sometimes random level 1 FA releases CH sims randomly poking, scoring a crumple since CH, but very risky
- st. HP, godlike poke in this MU
I try to buffer 2 ECG after every blocked cr.mk. If I spot ANYTHING resembling blue electricity I double tap 3K.
Hard as hell to do though.
And yeh, U1 stops Ryus throwing sweeps at all. This means all you have to worry about are cr.mk to get past which means you can start using Dudley’s great walk speed to bait out whiff cr.mk and punish with your own for the knock down. Also cr.lk from just inside cr.mk range will stuff Ryu in start up.
I don’t know why but i like using U1 more often now since:
a- awesome whiff punisher
b- looks great with his new alternate
c- 500 damage raw…
I play Adon, Zangief and Abel regularly and they now know NEVER to whiff a Jag Kick, Wheel Kick, Green Hand, Lariat within Rolling thunder range… some might argue that U2 could punish in similar fashion but, you can’t whiff ducking and negative edge U2… it’s not the same :-(… plus… any focus within range gets it too… backdash or not… even though RT doesn’t armour break… but i’m not telling THEM that!
Corscrew Cross, although only 60dmg less, is better for that because it has A TON of invincibility frames.
Marn says U1 is good and now all of you use it. Hilarious. U2>U1 unless you fight projectile users and honda.
Yeah…i’m sticking to Ultra 2 no matter what. I like my thought process with it on hand alot more.
It just always works better for me. Granted to punish a fireball i gotta be in the characters face, but so be it.
I don’t use Ultra 1 vs Sagat. They hardly throw fireballs against me anyway, and it can’t punish much else that U2 cannot.
I only used U1 vs Guile and Honda and didn’t care much for it. I was like U2 all day, I can combo into it. I didn’t even like U1 vs Ryu.
I only picked U1 to see what Marn meant when he was saying why it was better and, bar a few matchups, U1 was good to have. It’s 8 frames and travels at least half screen.
U1 leaves them right in front of Dudley for better oki than raw U2 or combo’d U2 done outside the corner.
Anything that was out of range to be punished by U2 can be punished by U1.
After a stun or focus crumple, raw U1 does more damage than raw U2.
Also, I now have now failed to punish a Geif lariat with both Ultras. His lariat is retarded and hit me out of it when I did it late to avoid getting hit out of it.
See this is a good example of why Ultra choice doesnt matter in most cases.
It’s usually the player’s inexperience of how to punish x move rather than the knowledge.
Vs Gief tho, U2 is the best choice.

I was using stHP if they were far and crHP, crHK if I was closer.
Oh and I went to my first offline gathering. It’s was pretty fun. Everyone was real cool and we watched SCR.
