they are already making money off of blu ray drives
sony’s hardware division has been floundering for the last decade. and selling consoles is usually at a loss for sony. software and movies are about the only profitable things sony has done since ps2.
having ps4’s sold means a larger install base for your software.
having media on anything and everything means a larger install base for your media.
profit margin on copying a movie (digitally or otherwise) that has usually comped its value in theaters is free money. why restrict it to your own hardware when your own hardware usually costs you money to put in people’s hands?
any electronic product sony has produced since the ps2 has essentially bombed (with ps3 being somewhat redeemable), and that’s more of an issue with sony’s corporate culture in regards to hardware. if they let their media fall into that line of thinking, sony will have nothing almost instantaneously.
Well Netflix has to lease the licensing rights to shows and movies right? I’m sure Sony just pulled some shut like “either keep it off the xbox or lose our titles for good”
The thing I find funny and sad at the same time is that some people think Sony will provide an umbrella of protection against microsofts kind of stupidity.
Sony is just as evil and big and… Corporatey…
As any other corporation, and if they whoop Microsoft there is no one besides Nintendo standing in their way of having a full on monopoly of the console gaming industry.
I’m not going to pretend like I have insider info or anything, its just logical. Both M$ and Sony have been rumoring and talking up the whole ‘kill used game’ angle for a while and have been talking to developers/producers about it, so logically there would be some level of back-talk thru shared developers. While M$ is in bed with EA, EA still hangs out with Sony on Thursday night.
So ‘no’, M$ doesn’t know Sony’s exact gameplan, but they know ‘enough’ and as I mentioned ‘more than us’ IMO. By no means are my comments meant to say M$ knows everything Sony is doing - especially akin to hardware (though again, sharing not only AMD but processor families, they likely understood the architecture direction of each other before hand), but the used game thing is something that extends beyond ‘in-house’.
oh god, just give me my wonderful 101, bayonetta 2, new guilty gear, evil within (shinji mikami), so i can just finally quit the hassle of video games forever and just play what i have for eternity. i have pretty much all the fighting games i have dreamed about wanting except a few that will never happen like, hnk2, one piece (by arcsystems and daisuke), grappler baki vs garouden (by namco/bandai and harada).
There’s a bizarre sort of irony in that Blockbuster pre-orders of Xbone are breaking records… Blockbuster is a company that couldn’t to adapt to a changing marketplace and has almost gone extinct, and M$ is doing everything it can to force people to adapt to them rather than the opposite.
