I disagree with the notion that the super hardcore are going to buy the XBO. Hardcore gamers want a console to play games on, but they won’t stand for what MS is (not) offering. I don’t, at least. It doesn’t even matter what MS shows at E3. As long as they don’t budge on the outstanding issues, they won’t get a sale.
A console that tries to be “all-in-one” is going to compromise somewhere. Part of the appeal of a console is that it did one thing, but it did it well, and everything was nice and simple. Somewhere down the road, they decided to add more and more features until consoles became something else entirely. And suddenly we have RRODs and YLODs and probably more acroymns down the road.
To be fair, the console’s flexibility has little to no impact with this, it was frankly games that caused these issues, not things like Netflix that runs on my iPhone. The issue is ‘cost’, they don’t want to Neo-Geo themselves with DIY PC pricing, and they take short cuts on top.
Unreal - I agree that Microsoft are trying really hard to sell us add-ons that nobody has really asked for. Thinking about it, grabbing the remote that is 1 foot away from me and pressing a button - I would much rather do that than talk to my games console, even if it requires only 2-3 words. There comes a point where interacting with a piece of machinery becomes a little too much and in my own opinion I think Microsoft are crossing my own personal preference line with this console. I don’t see a lot of the new aspects as selling points but rather as extra things to do.
The fantasy football thing, everybody keeps their mobile on hand. If you don’t you will not be in the majority. So many people also have a tablet device of some sort. Whoever sat down in the Microsoft office and decided that pressing a button to change a channel or picking up something that is already on your personage and clicking the fantasy football app - when that becomes too much, its more a case of what is this saying about humanity than something that needs a solution. Picking up my smart phone and clicking on an app already IS a fix in itself. Microsoft is promoting fixes of fixes of fixes with this console - its not inspiring, it wreaks of Kinect desperation from the higher ups at Microsoft who are desperate to replicate the buzz of the Wii at any cost.
And then of course there are the rumors - which Microsoft have ignited and stoked themselves. A lot of those are potential deal breakers. Not only have they given people very little to look forward to, they have also worried most if not all of their potential customers. As a potential customer going in to that press conference, Microsoft have done the exact opposite of their job for that day. Find me one person who waited to watch the Xbox One reveal to find out about new ways to watch MTV, Maury or a sports channel. Or someone who still doesn’t appreciate the ease of access their smart phone or tablet has recently offered them.
I could probably post up 20 more of these borderline rants I don’t mind if a console wants to do a little more than play games. I appreciated the hell out of the PS3 when it allowed me blurays and video streaming. Voice control can go in the same bracket as 3d. If the Xbone takes voice commands like kettle boil, toilet flush or auto reply smart impressive message to girlfriend - then I might feel a bit different about it.
I seriously feel like I could rant forever about how lackluster the entire Xbone thing was. But it has everyone talking, it will be interesting to see how things play out over the next few weeks and months.
Blame Nintendo. Nintendo - while the Wii is still IMO a ‘gimmick’ by ‘execution’ (blame third party) - made the point that innovation and interactivity can move units and sell even crappy software. So M$ is trying to usurp what’s good about everybody. The problem is that … really…its still a gimmick. Even with increased accuracy, I just don’t see me ‘virtually’ playing Street Fighter or tekken. I can’t see the level of execution necessary to ‘trap’ the hardcore demographic, the ONLY thing I use my kinect for is Kinect Party, and that in itself is a gimmick.
Now I also have to keep it real about this. M$ - yes are a business, that means they think things through, and as developers ALSO, they see and know stuff that we don’t yet, but prematurely letting the cats out the bag won’t benefit them. With that said, I’m pretty confident that they know more about Sony’s game plan than we do. They wouldn’t let all the negatives come out like this without knowing that Sony isn’t as innocent as they currently look. M$ may not always be smart, but they aren’t stupid. To ‘me’ it looks like M$ said ‘lets take the backlash upfront so people get used to the idea, and when the system officially launches, its a footnote and the focus is on the goods’. On the flipside Sony will be releasing a bevy of negative ‘features’ around/near launch - and people will be inflamed by it still while debating their purchase. So the graphs of interest? M$ will go ‘up’ in public opinion over time - allowing for better forcasting (so financially its better long term as well as initially), while Sony - who is ‘comparitively’ riding high, will go down hill - getting the opposite affect.
The winner of all this could be Nintendo if they just get their act together. My Wii U is dusty.
So i turned on my xbox & checked up on the new xbox one. Then i see this thread & wow lots of hate going on haha. I can see why a lot of peeps would be pissed but didn’t think it would be this bad. Im too much of a casual gamer now that most of the shit microsoft is trying to pull doesn’t really affect me that much. As an all in one entertainment device im excited for this system. This will go great in my home theater & probably get another one for the living room or bedroom.
I haven’t read up or seen what the PS4 is about yet but ill probably end up getting that too.
The potential of a KI match becoming a real life UFC match intrigues me. Then, me being a 6’6 400Ib black dude gives me a huge natural advantage so I cna play a scrubby Fulgore and eye punch people.
I’d rather M$ focused on tactile tech though. That way I can reach thru the screen on XBL and choke out racist 13 year olds. Now THAT would make me buy the system…
With the Kinect the comes with the Xbox 1, it’s entirely possible that Big Brother could be watching you doing sexy time with the asian wife… and recording it for future fap sessions.
Stop it slime. M$ adding the ability to watch TV thru the XBone by no means affect games.
Like I said in the 360 thread, - the FGC is SMALL compared to other sources of income for VG companies, so things that irritate us - all wireless controllers, game installs, etc - things that make a tournament harder to perform from a logistics stand-point, are m00t as they are ‘great’ for everyone else. People who play Madden don’t care about wired controllers. Ther average Joe doesn’t WANT wires. As a parent, once my boy started crawling, the FIRST thing I did from a video game stand point was go wireless. Game installs? Shit I’ve wanted that forever! but the way it’s setup on the 360 - its nigh useless - thus I’ve only done it like twice…I still have to get up, find the disc and put it in - so full installs are a god-send to a ‘casual’ (though I fuggin hate the process on the PS3 where I et a new shiny toy then sit there waiting for the console to update, then the game).
The Kinect always on? 1) M$ would get hit with a huge class action lawsuit if they violated their own TOS - they won’t be ‘snooping’. 2) If everything is legal - so fuggin what. 3) Ads have become a reality of life, I’d much rather have ads that actually mean something to me, than random shit.
EDIT - Food for thought - how many people were/are outraged that they can Google their home address and not only get an overview of it typically, but can see the front? I can google an address and find out what the property tax paid was. I can find out if you messed up financially, just with an address. So take that in mind when it comes to the whole ‘privacy’ debate.
keep it on its own switch or power strip. still a hassle, but i’d rather have that option as opposed to it powering itself on and streaming what i’m doing to youtube or whatever.
