What they really mean by the consoles being better than PCs is mostly that they have much better performance per watt really (this much is true due to possible optimizations).
None of the tech they are using is truly new or “a generation ahead”, it just isn’t needed in regular computers at this point in time and any claims of such is just BS PR speak.
EA is trying to move away from PCs altogether since their plan to push Origin really isn’t working as well as they had hoped.
There’s also this
My PC cost me only a little more than a launch PS3 and it can run anything on the current market with ease and I can’t see either of these consoles being too far off that price.
Well the technology they’re using is new for AMD (Jaguar stuff is being released later this year) since they are moving from their current APU design to SoC but AMD had announced they would be doing this 2 years ago.
SoC technology itself isn’t new because Intel has been doing this with their Atom stuff. Cellphones also use SoC designs but the power output is obviously much lower due to size restrictions as well as needing to conserve battery life.
They basically took 2 Jaguar units (the normal version runs 4 cores/4 threads) and put 2 of them together for 8 cores/8 threads (though I am not sure if devs will realistically have access to all 8 cores at all times despite the OS and recording being done on different chips) but this approach to beefing up hardware isn’t new either. Both Nvidia and AMD do it with their enthusiast video cards all the time.
Raw power for PS4 is higher than the XBone (33% I believe), and looking at raw TFlops puts it somewhere above HD7850 but below HD7870 (mid-range card) territory but more efficient due to using newer architecture which is still quite good anyway.
If we assume that similar console hardware you are able to squeeze out ~2x the performance (this is not really how it works since the raw TFlops doesn’t magically go up just because you are optimizing) that puts it close to an HD7970 in a perfect scenario (not likely to be the case)
What is new is the way the PS4 decided to use GDDR5 RAM for the whole system in this sort of machine. The higher latencies that GDDR5 memory has shouldn’t really be an issue though. This is the “game changer” really though I am not too knowledgeable on how they are going to put this to good use besides the obvious stuff like extremely high texture quality. I just hope the HDD doesn’t cause any issues should files need to be moved in out out of memory constantly (probably not).
Anyway, they made similar claims about performance for the 360 and the PS3 and efficiency yet that didn’t happen. This time it should be much better though and the PS4 and XBone might very well be ahead of the curve on release (giving them the benefit of the doubt here) but we have DDR4 RAM and GDDR6 VRAM next year anyway as well as new GPU series with new architecture altogether so whatever. I’ll be picking up a PS4 when they release the slim model or something just how I did with the PS3.
There are some things they haven’t discussed but I am tired as hell, maybe another day.
They aren’t saying that…Major Nelson is saying that the plans aren’t for used games are incomplete and they’ll have more information later…despite the fact that most of the information has been coming from Microsoft’s own people. I find it kinda hard to believe that everyone in the company didn’t know of the initial plans to have this much confusion on the matter when asked after the conference but ya know…whatever. Whether they back out of their plans completely in the long run remains to be seen…if they do then I welcome it.
can i still not delete post?
anyway;
why yall angry? Is it because yall consider yourselves gamers and you just must buy whatever these companies offer no matter how much you dislike it? That just what you do? And you mad at business companies for exploiting the fact that you gonna eat up whatever they put out? You complain about getting violated while denying your own complicity in the very violation itself (or maybe we could get GD-type metaphysical up in here and talk about the illusion of free will). Or you mad at casual gamers that are ruining it for the ‘real’ hardcore gamers like you, who you acknowledge represent a niche minority, while simultaneously denying any sense of entitlement (or self-awareness). "I dont have things the way I want them, even though nothing illegal is happeningggg!!! CAPITALISM is evil!"
hahaa
Why would that be a problem? I don’t know how white gamers do it, but since the 80’s black gamers have been doing this:
Friend wants to borrow game. I say “Okay, but you have to let me borrow one of your games that i like”. Then if anything goes wrong (shit gets damaged or stolen), you keep the game they let you borrow. If they don’t have shit you want, you don’t lend. Simple as that.
It’s called collateral. When I found out my post-high school white friends just GIVE shit to people without collateral, my damn mind was blown. They act like it’s nothing, but when they can’t get their game back/to play anymore due to scratches, they damn near cry. Wtf?
