video game hipsters.
2012 remember my children, the MAYAS, it all makes sense now
Wouldn’t this put Gamefly clear out of business?
And this right here is why I think consoles nixing used games wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Part of the reason used games exist is because gaming itself is horribly expensive. Not everyone has the money to buy every game they want, and therefore some of them sell their games off to offset the cost of new games. PC games haven’t allowed used game sales for YEARS through either digital downloads with DRM, license keys for their software, or even those manuals where you had to answer some in-game question with an answer printed in the book before you could boot the game (remember those, anyone?). Even with all this, PC gaming is doing just fine. It’s even set to overtake console game sales by 2015.
Why? Games are dirt cheap on PC. Yes, I can’t sell any of the games I buy on Steam, but it really doesn’t matter because brand new PC games are usually 15-20% cheaper than their console counterparts right off the bat. If you wait a month or two, they’ll usually get put in a sale for 50-75% off while the most a console game gets is maybe 20% off the price if it’s a top-seller. It’s not uncommon to be able to buy twenty top-notch games for under $100 during a Steam sale. I don’t need to sell my games, because most of them I end up buying for cheaper than it would cost to rent or buy at the lowest used price.
Anyway, my main point is this: Used games are not a bad thing, but they keep the price of new games high because publishers feel like they have to jack up the price due to the fact that they make no money on used game sales. If used games are eliminated, publishers and vendors would be forced to drop the starting price on all games because most people wouldn’t be able to afford them and sales would suffer a fierce drop. The market could suffer a crash even worse than the one in the 80’s, so prices would have to drop so sales could stay up.
We don’t really need used games, we just need less expensive games.
Yeahhh…this just seems like a stupid idea. I mean, I wasn’t planning on buying the next Xbox system anyway since I didn’t buy the Xbox or the 360 and really have no intention of buying either so it doesn’t ultimately affect me, but it’s just stupid. As long as the system was offline though, it’d be fine right? Like, it’s not like this would mess up everyone who runs tourneys on Xbox consoles in the future, would it? I don’t really know any details on what it would pertain or whatnot, but I figured I’d ask.
Instead of backing up, you’ll be
Up Back-ing.
That’s the plan.
k, here is how I see it:
MS is behind the ball with DLC. The whole stupidity of using MS points over $$$, the price of some of the items (5 bucks to wear a Rockstar or Capcom or THQ t-shirt???), and the complete and total lack or challenge of issuing DLC (I’ve read about many publishers who avoid it due to the fees MS charges for DLC). This has lead to shit like Capcom releasing multiple versions of the same game rather than PROPERLY updating the game, or stuff where Mortal Kombat had to change how they update the characters movelists due to tweaks and patches costing a lot of money to do. Oh, and should I even bring up the debacle of SFxTekken, where PS3 gets 3 exclusive characters, and we can’t manage to negotiate ONE?
Add to that the stupidity of XBox Live fees, the fact their controllers break down like a child’s toy, the exceptionally high price of some of their peripherals (HDD) and games and services, the complete lack of Canadian services (we didnt get Netflix, or the ability to download movies or TV shows until WAY too late into the life of the console), and the RRoD bullshit, I really have a hard time moving forward into next gen, and going with Microsoft again.
I loved my Xbox, and while I enjoy my 360, I’ve had SOOOOOOOOOOO many fucking gripes over it.
It’s getting harder and harder to be a gamer, and I hate to say it but Steam + torrenting is leading me back to just being a dick pirate on PC, rather than support a console that doesn’t give a flying fuck about me.
If used games are banned, that’s a dealbreaker for me. I will NOT buy a 720 if that’s the case, and they don’t either lower prices on games or bust their ass to amaze me.
tl;dr i agree with Duckie’s genius, we need to have lower priced games.
There is no reason why some of the complete ass titles all need to be full title prices. CoD or Halo? Sure I can understand full price for that. Children’s titles and games with little or no replay value, or games that are single player or multiplayer only, do not need to be full price. Shitty licensed titles based off some flavour of the day movie in theatres right now, do not likely need to be full price either.
Basically, stop charging full price for sucky games, and I won’t have to worry about trading them in when I realize they suck.
Eh, I’ll probably just stick to the PC for all my gaming needs through the next console cycle. I dont really care about not being able to sell my games or buying used ones. I dont buy used games and I dont sell my games. Shit most of my games are of the digital variety.
Im sure my kids will want a wiiu and nextbox and ps4 and im sure they’ll get’em. No matter what I’ll get to try them all out…eventually.
The main problem here is that gamers, for the most part, have no backbones. We bend over and slowly take whatever the industry does to us. Imagine if, in the movie industry, instead of a flat rate of a movie ticket, you paid a base cost for the movie, but also had to decide which trailers you wanted to see for an additional fee, and if there happened to be a post ending credits surprise you had to pay additionally to see THAT (of course then all movies would start to include that). Sounds ridiculous right? Movie goers wouldn’t put up with that shit at all.
But us? Rocksteady tells you “Buy this game brand new or you don’t get 10% of the game’s plot/gameplay. If you don’t buy the game new, part of the game’s on disc content must be unlocked for additional money.” EA locking up football exclusively for Madden many moons ago was just the TIP of the iceberg, and looks like child’s play next to the bullshit we see today. Did Arkham City sales suffer in the slightest over Rocksteady’s nickel and diming? Nope.
The only company I’ve found that treats us like intelligent adults is R*. Their base games are COMPLETE for the price you pay. And then their DLC is COMPLETE, priced appropriately and totally worth the money. It is not too much to ask for that game makers to use this model. That is, FINISH your game during the development cycle, not release 85% and nickel and diming us for the rest of it.
exactly. I was expecting this gen to be all DLC heavy. I expected new halo maps every month, as it tries to be the best FPS and service their mass customers. i expected fighting games where new fighters were getting released every few months. I expected crazy fun DLC for my characters, like fucked up things to customize them with.
Instead we get fucking horse armor and rape prices.
For starters I can’t believe you started this thread but then you had the balls to use a Kotaku article as your launch point? WTF?
And you SRK. Since when the fuck do you guys entertain even the notion of believing Kotaku articles much less talking about one?
there are like a billion other links on it. Would you like the slashdot articles? Perhaps you would like to google “720 not support used games” and take your pic of the billions of links. I just post whatever link I feel like. I don’t post Radiant approved links.
Aw come on man you can’t tell me you actually believe this rumor? The damn thing is fuckin two years off, we haven’t even mock models yet. Nothing talked about two years out ever ends up being close to true.
People freaking out about this are even funnier then the people who thought Sony would actually launch PS3s with the boomerang controller.
I hope noooooot!
That bitch won’t just rrod/code-whatever-msoft-renamed-it-to-so-they-can-pretend-to-have-solved-it…it’ll explode or catch fire. Calling it in advance.
sony and nintendo users wont care
I would be willing to accept this as long as it puts Gamestop out of business somehow.
What is your problem with GS?
