x23 seems to work well with a myriad of characters (dante, arthur, tron, hulk, wesker, akuma, more). she’s almost like an ‘any team’ character like wesker, dante, sent, doom, etc.
on the other hand, unless i’m missing something, she can’t followup a midscreen airthrow with a combo without an otg assist (and a quick one at that) or a really low-to-the-ground front airthrow, which is unreliable. amirite?
if that’s true, that’s a little disheartening, but maybe her offense would be too strong considering the other tools she has access to.
that has me wondering does she need jam session, vajira, or some other tracking/vertical assist to deal with aerial foes?
or does she just need to corner her opponent before she can REALLY start being scary?
You need one of 3 things basically to follow up after air throw. This is considering we’re not taking into account charged OTG slice straight into super which is her always available but weakest follow up.
-
Decent speed OTG assist.
-
Immediately call a fast assist that creates a soft knockdown or long spinning flyback state and charge your OTG ankle slice right after so they hit at the same time and launch them high enough to follow up. Examples including calling assists like Wesker’s Jaguar dash assist, Dante’s Weasel Shot assist or Thor’s Mighty Smash assist…then immediately cancelling into charged OTG ankle slice and then launch them. This worked with Akuma’s tatsu assist in Vanilla (apparently still works in Ultimate but the timing is tighter now that you must hit them while they’re still high in the air)
-
Charge OTG ankle slice…turn on XF (like Wolverine).
I would say it would be preferable to have an AA assist when dealing with certain matchups with X-23. X-23 has great aerial movement and can go up and reach those people laming out at the top of the screen but her problem is she has no moves from that high in the air (top far corner of the screen) that will bring the opponent down and convert to combo. Although Wolverine’s and Felicia’s aerial movements aren’t as good they have moves that cause ground bounces on aerial hits that will guarantee the opponent comes down and are hit by a full combo at least. Felicia specifically can just fish for air throw because she can self OTG off all her throws.
They even further nerfed the hit stun on the only move X-23 had that could convert from high in the air (L talon attack). Making an AA assist more preferable now so you have something that will force them to take damage of some type. If you have an assist that can relaunch for you you can try to at least air throw fish when super jumping or doing H talon attacks to reach them. If not then you pretty much have to find some way to fish for air grab and when that happens turn on XF to kill them off.
Just FYI, you can still convert a combo after an air throw with Akuma’s tatsu assist. It won’t work in basically any other situation, though.
Do you have to jump up in the air now that they flip out in mid air? I can get it to work in the corner but mid screen seems like a bitch now.
I just double checked it. The timing is definitely tighter than vanilla, but it works. Midscreen, I’m doing air throw, dash forward, call assist, 236M (charge), then if I did all those with the right timing I can connect with sM. Sometimes I can get sH to connect but it feels like it must be a one frame link or something, it’s really unreliable plus it depends on the timing and spacing of the dash, assist call, and otg. If you dash too far or not far enough before canceling into Ankle Slice, neither normal will connect.
best hit confirms from Akuma assist now are definitely to go air to air and bring them down to the ground. I use tiger knee L DP xx L Talon Attack, s.H then you can do a ground loop before your launch. qcb+H j.M j.H xx L DP xx L talon (land) s.H s.S is the one I use
that’s all great info. i’ve got some experimenting to do, but i think i’ve thought of a character that can help deal with superjump height opponents AND allow good midscreen post-throw combos who isn’t a vertical/vajra assist. dante still seems like her best teammate though.
Here’s the video I made today:

Got the idea from an eaaaarly episode of Maximillian’s TOW. Try it!
I’ll drop a link in the video thread for archiving purposes, I suppose? Is this forum gonna get reorganized, or what?

25 MINUTE SUPER SIZE X-23 CHANGES EVALUATION VID. First page also updated with video. Will have text annotations soon for the vid explaning things.
How do you guys think X23 should handle her matchup against Strider?
Depends on what you’re having trouble with and what assists he’s using. The main thing you wanna know is how to deal with random teleport kicks. Chicken block to punish or dash under right before it comes down on your head.
I had a few good matches against a Strider the other day. Of course, a scrubby Strider will spam the teleport dive kick at you all day - chicken block to punish, or dash out of the way, if you’re sure there’s no assist coming.
Against a Strider who knows what they’re doing, it becomes a pretty interesting match, because both X-23 and Strider have unconventional mobility. One thing you’ll immediately be aware of is that his air normals will usually beat yours. If he’s smart, he’ll also judiciously use his low-profile dash to avoid or punish and Talon dives. I’m still having trouble with this matchup, honestly - I sort of resigned myself to just using standard grounded approaches and trying to punish wall clings, etc.
If he’s trying to zone you for some reason, a well placed wall jump will get you in.
