Zangief being a badguy in everything besides the games doesn’t fly when this movie is about the characters in their respective games and Zangief is not a badguy in his respective game.

The vast majority of folks don’t know much about the story of SF. Not much was really known or said about Zangief in SF2 which is where most people will know him from. Here’s what will be in most people’s mind.

He was from USSR/Russia. They’re like always the bad guy.
He’s a big guy. Big guys are always bad.
Who ever picked Zangief? He had to be one of the most underused characters in SF2 which makes him the bad guy by default because they’d always be playing against him in single player mode.

Atlantis was a pretty decent attempt at compressing Nadia into an hour and a half (even if Disney denies that being their intent).

And this movie looks good. I see no problem with characters like Zangief being ‘bad’ - he’s a more fun character that the Shadaloo dudes for a kids movie so, ya know, whatever. Plus in terms of arcade culture itself, throws are cheap so a character based completely around throws is obviously a bad guy.

Are you seriously hating because a movie created for kids is not appealing to you? It’s a disney movie no matter what it’s not going to fail as you think it is. You haven’t even seen the movie either. I don’t think this movie is trying to tell us that video game are violent. Watch the movie first then you can talk all the shit you want.

I came into this thread to post the exact same thing. I heard about this movie from a friend, watched the trailer, and the only thing that came to mind was “pandering bullshit”.

Here’s a fun little experiment!

Let’s say “Wreck It Ralph” was the exact same movie, but instead of being a video game character, he was a supervillain who decided to become good. Let’s say it didn’t have the million and one cameos and references, but the exact same dialogue was delivered by characters who weren’t video game brand names. So “Zangief” would just be a generic Russian baddie called “Ivan”.

Would anyone give a fuck about this movie, or be defending it as something that is going to be “great”?

It looks exactly like every other Disney piece of shit, except GASP it has VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS IN IT! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! AND SOME FROM STREET FIGHTER! I MUST SEE IT NOW!

After a great summer of movies, I am starved for anything decent to see during this time of the year. Seems worth the watch.

Roger Rabbit was a ground-breaking animated film in terms of its visuals and technology, had a highly original premise, outstanding dialogue for a kid’s film, and some fairly inspired bits of humor. While I wasn’t a big fan, I can totally appreciate what it did.

Meanwhile, Wreck-It Ralph’s main draw is that it has famous video game characters lazily slopped on top of the same generic plot, dialogue, and humor. Let’s not compare the two.

I think in the end Capcom didn’t do enough to distinguish Zangief’s personality. They just figured, “Huge russian beast. Good enough”.

Then years later something like this comes up and the mistake is understandable.

Also, Snow White & The Seven Dwarves IS Evangelion shit from Disney. If you don’t understand that statement, you probably have no grounds for ever discussing quality animation.
