I play both Blanka & Honda…and I have to say Blanka vs Rog is the most retarded match-up for me…I don’t even feel Honda vs Sagat is 7-3 but I truly feel Blanka vs Rog IS.
To beat a Rog(that’s not stupid) with Blanka requires tons of luck…hoping to get a lead and let the timer runs out… any offensive moves you make are punishable
Most vipers aren’t accustomed to fighting honda yet but it’s pretty doable once you realize the ranges honda can’t defend against. In general, don’t super jump too much cause honda has an easier time boxing you out at higher ranges.
Ambiguous cross-ups and BK cross-ups are what you have to shoot for and the most important thing is getting that first knockdown and not letting up. People think that as viper, you always have to be offensive and honestly, not true at all. Just let him come to you after getting a bit of life advantage through chip using non-obvious thunder knuckles. Do not let honda’s get free headbutt chip on you, jump em.
Balrog vs Blanka isn’t really as bad as people think. Just build meter as you wait for rog to come to you by whiffing electricity and just approach it slowly. Blanka suffers the same flaws as honda meaning he has bad safe offense against rog, but it’s still winnable. If you can’t do walk-up electricity and have bad execution however, this match-up will suck a lot more.
I personally don’t think Balrog 7-3’s many characters in the game. Like Sabin said…Americans are lazy or just don’t see it’s worth the effort to run through bad matchups. Which overall lessens our play IMO since we’re just looking for the easy way out instead of honing our reactions with the characters we use. Even if they aren’t lazy more than one match in tournaments means you might as well just pick a better character. Japanese Blankas vs. American Blankas is a huge testament to how lazy US Blankas are vs. Japanese ones. Shit is almost night and day minus 2 or 3 US players (including my boy MOD who was in Japan for almost 2 years).
Blanka can still be good but he requires a lot of work and execution now. Once people figured that out they realized they either had to step up or pick other characters. Of course Americans run to the better character.
Honda can do WAY better than Blanka when vs a Rog …at least honda deals way more damage/hit and has more health…Honda’s c.jab can actually hang with Rog’s c.jab…random normals has good chance to beat out Rog’s non-ex dash punches… the fact that Headbutts & Buttslams knock down while Blanka balls & Up balls don’t(not to mention they are punishable on hit too) are a huge difference…
It’s still not a 7-3 at all. Balrog does average damage, has linear as hell mix-up and has very bad oki options. Honda does better against balrog but not by leaps and bounds like people think.
Not to point out any particular person, but after spectating WCW, the amount of good blanka play I saw from anybody other than Hiro was straight bad. Nobody had any clever mix-up or really understood blanka’s style at all. Its like blanka hasn’t changed in America since January hold Hiro beating 5 sagats in a row + Ken I at WCW. I’m not sure if the midwest or east coast has better blanka players, but if they do, thank god.
this thread is why the US will never get better in sf4… No matchup is 10-0 in sf4, some are harder then others but its very possible to win with any character…
sakura vs akuma. this is the one matchup where i feel helpless with sak. her bnb ex hk combo completely misses on him. she cant shenanigan him due to teleport. she has an insanely hard time just getting to him since shes terrible at closing gaps(ex otoshi doesnt work too well on him). dive kick and demon flip divekick stuffs her c.fierce AA clean for a free combo. which makes for free rushdown all day.
so he can turtle her to death, rush her to death, she cant do her standard damage combo, she cant do her tricks. total shutdown.
on the positive side, she kills that s.rh easily with low forward into dp =D
Iyo was on a hot streak that day. Doesn’t really mean much considering he OCV’d an entire team himself. It’s all in your head honestly. The sooner people realize all match-ups are winnable, the sooner everybody in the US will get better. Though I do agree, some 7-3’s are fairly luck based for the underdog to win, and even then, sometimes all the luck in the world won’t help if the advantaged player stays solid.
Failed counter-picking at WCW was so common, it was hilarious.
but on the real, Iyo’s a beast, seeing him play live, how he reacts to stuff etc… you just cant help but be left in awe. He’s similar to daigo when playing, except he’s much colder/ruthless looking.
saying “bad match-up” does’nt mean impossible, it just means the “disadvantaged” character has more risk to take, less space for mistakes, and more to watch out for vs the “advantaged” character . I think thats what’s being discussed in this thread.
What I meant was that Balrog easily eliminates Blanka’s best asset, the ball which forces Blanka to rely on his weaker attacks. Basically, I spend the whole match trying to mixup throws with FA’s and the slide. You can bait headbutts then punish preferably with an ultra.
Good stuff, but no one answered my question. All of you that say Blanka vs. Balrog isn’t even a 7-3 mismatch, have you personally dealt with match yourself? Have you played Blanka against a decent Rog? Ball getting punished on hit and block is only part of the reason this is a bad match and that is all I hear being talked about. Hiro beating 5 Sagats and a Ken is great! But we are talking about Rog. Sagat is not as bad of a match for Blanka and against Ken, that isn’t a mismatch at all so I don’t understand why that was bought up in this particular discussion.
Balrog vs Blanka is 6-4, nothing more. In fact I love playing Balrogs a lot more than Sagats. Blanka actually has a lot of options if you can get past the fact that you can’t offensively ball. And you actually can do jab xx ball without it being punishable, on blocked dash punches at certain ranges. Plus safe jumping on Rog is stupid easy.
