This is pretty much why I refuse to play anything pre 98 and why I avoid 2000.
KOF Maximum Impact makes every KOF seem like trash.
But real answer…2000 I didn’t like all too much, but I didnt play pre 99, so I have no opinion on 97,95 etc.
95 is probably the last real old school 2d fighter i guess. by that time te alphas where arlready out, xmen, darkstalkers, alot of better looking fighters where coming out back then. so this was basically the last not so well animated, and not so well drawn 2d fighter of the era (think of sf2, ffs, ss2, karnov and the likes, old school).
that’s 2002
people is so quickly to judge things, back in the day I didn’t see most of the stuff people here is talking about. Just play the games and judge for yourself
and for me 98 has nothing special really outside of the perfected gameplay from 97, the game is more a compilation of other kofs than an original game
97 is the best original game snk has ever produced and the most played “casually” kof around the world
and those are facts
Oh, geez, is that all?
So I played 97…
I’ll just say: Never again.
^ There was one thing I LOVED about 97 and that was the presentation. The way it felt like a REAL tournament up until the whole orochi stuff. The lack of music, the model who would hold the R2 R3 signs in the background, the announcer ect. It was really deep. I can’t vouch for the gameplay seeing as I rarely ever play it. I still think it was a bold move.
Least favorite would have to be 2001 even though it’s the one that got me into the series. The striker system just was too beyond me. I didn’t know when I could pull people out and so on and so fourth. I loved the presentation everything but it was too uninteresting.
2003 is pretty good to me. I thought it was more simple which is always a good thing. Less it more. The controls were too simplified to the point where I would special on accident but It flows perfectly to me on controller. On stick 2K3 and XI are impossible to me.
I guess I am the only one who enjoyed 99 and 03, so sue me.
I own both the GBA games and they are terrible, they really mucked it up. you would think, the GBA has four buttons, the neogeo has four buttons. it would be much easier to use than SSF2TRevival. Instead of the classic button settings they had to ruin it by assigning everything to two buttons and half the time shit doesn’t even work for me. I could still do some pretty awesome 40%-ish combos with Leona.
I liked some of the new characters, they even included a Sakura wannabe that hugs Kyo’s nuts all the time. Overall, the second one was a good attempt and I was impressed with the graphics despite all the cut frames, and the new characters really didn’t blend with the old cast, wtf? God I hate that game.
 Jeez, you sound like if 97 raped your whole family. You don’t have to flip on him for having a difference of opinion. Take it easy, I can understand why you don’t like it, just don’t lose your cool over it.
I enjoy playing all of the KOF games, no matter how broken they are. But if I had to pick just one, then it’d be 2001. Despite all the things wrong with it, it still did some cool things which people already noted in this thread.
KOF 99’ no questions asked.
I’d say 2001 for reasons already stated in the first few pages…99 was pretty wacky too, trying too much to make all these changes just a year after the awesomeness of 98.
Used to hate 2000, but now I don’t find it so bad… I can live with the assists/strikers (and to an extent, the Armor and Counter modes) I guess, even though striker-wise it’s Seth, Joe, and A. Iori most of the time. It certainly has the best portraits/art pre-2002UM.
I’ll probably have to go with 2003 as the worst. Its just barely playable. So many glitches, broken characters (Duo/Goro), boring gameplay, its ugly looking, horrible music and sound, its just a bad start to the new saga. Only thing I like about 2003 is probably… uhh… high tier K’. He’s so boring to use in that game anyway so it doesnt matter. I really cant think of any truly redeeming factors.
I actually enjoyed 2001… to an extent. The music is overall better than 2003 I’d have to say (even if it wasnt all that good), stages look better, new characters were pretty interesting (Angel, May Lee, K9999), cool bosses, and the return of KRIZALID (kinda). 2001 is probably a game I’d only play with friends or by myself. Its broke as fuck, and I dont like playing broken games unless theyre fun. 2001 is kinda fun, especially with striker gangrape.
Edit: Hmm… appearantly I’m a troll for enjoying 2001. If that’s what it’s called then I guess I am…
2k2, worst graphics and audio. Not a fan of the controls either.
96 - had Boss Team don’t care.
97 - where’s the music and 98 is better.
I have to give credit to 2000
the last game from OG SNK
If you were in Mexico, you’d get killed for saying that.
so we can all agree on 3 worst kofs ever are 94, 96 & 99. yes they even worse than 03.
Id just say 97 was a little nice (Only special characters get themes, otherwise you just get sounds), but I would just say why not play 98 then if you wanted to play 97. 2001 would be at the lowest, I just cant work those controls and I cant stand that damn 3 beat character select song or those 5 sec loop themes. Oh yeah, Ignitz? Fuck him…and K9999
Nobody agrees on that.
Have you even read the topic?
Regardless of how bad the 96’ gameplay was, it has some of the best music and presentation of the series plus it gave us Leona, Kasumi, Mature, Vice, Chizuru, Goenitz, and the Boss team.
Original 2002 DOES have bad graphics and music.
Don’t care!
