Working Overtime: The C.Viper Technical Thread

Take your time and think about it like other fighters, figure out what your goals are and how to achieve them then work your way toward making your speed match that of the game. Viper has a lot of tools to slow down the game and make it easier to play, execution is just something to take time with, I have dreadful execution but have still done pretty well with Viper. ^.^

Just what Chrisis said. Viper has the tools to be a rough customer to deal with, but the reason she is hard to understand and use right is because she doesn’t have an effective and reliable horizontal attack. What is your best projectiles in the game? It’s not vertical projectiles. Even though Viper has the best in vertical projectiles you can’t just pop it out there and stop opponents as easily as you could with something that covers horizontally. Sure she has optic blast but even though it is really good you can get blown up for just placing it out there. They can be on you in no time if you guess wrong with Viper. Your diagonal attacks personally are the ones that can shutdown an offense for a limited time which is why Cap and Ghost rider with his j.S can be tough to deal with.

The thing I believe is the most important with Viper and Chrisis has pointed it out is that her mobility is top priority. Definitely take Chrisis’ questions seriously and always revert to them when you have a rough time dealing with a specific setup. She has 8 way dash, effectively 4 double jumps in the air if you count BK feints and one of the fastest down dashes in the game. Her normals are trash so you can’t just go all in without getting slapped by a dante sword or Dormammu cr.M or pretty much any wesker normal. Each one has their uses. Their is not one normal move that can really be abused by Viper. The way I’ve kind of learned Viper was by trial and error online which is rough in vanilla since one touch = mommy ain’t coming home. I could outline common situations and tricks that could help you along. But learning mobility is the best thing you can do with Viper. Without that you limit yourself to typical and easy to read tri-dash setups. I find that this is the biggest reason why you don’t see many Vipers in the community get far. Next is definitely understanding space and where your projectile game fits in it. In the end a good Viper with high mobility and great ground control will make most opponents come to you within time even if they are looking to create a zoning game. If you want some game time in with me and have an Xbox ready (i think you do I’ve played you in SSF4 a long time ago I think? And got bodied.) hit me with an invite. I don’t have the best Viper and best reads sometimes, but I could give you some idea where to take your game next.

so i still have alot of reading and practice to do with viper but one thing i think that crucial to learning how to play this game in general is slowing down your combo imputs. usualy when im close enough to hit someone and i know the hits are going to connect i rush through the imputs L.M.H.S up H.H.S D,B Hyper (or whatever combo’s you guys know of) but when it comes to moves that take a bit more fineness like specials it all comes out jumbled. i have a few vids im workin on to send up to youtube hopefully i’ll have them up by tonight

**@Chrisis **
WOW thnx for the juicy tips, i never did think training with a goal in mind, when ever i hit the lab i always just practice combos and thats it. Now my goals are to train on viper mobility/mixups and getting in.

Oh my technical question is, during a stair kick loop, ive seen ppl post the L.BK feint after the j.HS but i also have succeeded using **M.BK feints **on the stair kick loop. Is there a technical reason why L.BK feint is being used?

In UMvC3 they made hurt boxes for characters smaller in the air which make you roll under them for stair kick loop. M.BK feints actually might be the easier way to do the stair kick loop now but you are making your links tighter since M.BK feint actually takes a frame or 2 longer (should be in the book when you can first do your feint for each strength). All strengths all applicable to her combos and movement. But the way I do stair kick loop is to do the super jump and do your heavy, double jump heavy into the stair kick loop. Your double jump forward acts like it did in the first one where she actually stays in front of the character for doing L.BK feints. This is how I do it now. Oh yeah and more damage.

Wait, there’s a difference between the different BK feints? I’ve been using H this whole time. xD

I recently picked up Viper after finding out how fun she is, but what I wanna know is how necessary is it to do Rapid Seismos? I can do 3 to the right and none to the left on stick and 0 both ways on pad lulz. But yeah, feels very aggravating how I feel like I make no progress with that just one piece of tech.

I’ll just list out the rent-a-phrases you’ll get on this topic.
[]R.Seis are very not necessary to play Viper effectively, but add a whole lot to her game. eg. you won’t be garbage without them, but if you want to be great, learn them.
[
]A single well placed seismo is worth 1000 badly placed R.Seis. Learn to use them first, then worry about rapid.
[]Practice.
[
]Practice on both sides.
[]Look at the tips on the technical thread.
[
]Practice more.

Practice in real matches.
That about covers what you’ll hear. The rest is all in this thread.

i basically got her rapid seismo game down now…i just dont know how to cancell her focus attack into ex seismo while staying in the same spot…ne body ?

Specials are cancelable into EX. You should be able to just input the latter immediately after the former. <.<

You only need to be holding a single button to charge focus, so it’s totally possible to let go of S while it’s charging so you can 623S out of it!

OOk i didnt know that…but dont you have to dash cancel then ex seismo.

Nope, no dash cancelling needed. Focus attack is treated like the first hit of Viper’s S, it can have assists summoned during it, be cancelled into specials, cancelled into EX moves, and cancelled into supers. Additionally it can be cancelled into dashes.

good looks , got it!! my viper just lvl up

Dammit, I suck. ;_;

Awww, where did they hurt you?

We all do. Seriously we all still suck with this character. As soon as you master one thing there’s alsways another.

Fuck, I still resent doing rapid Seismo’s on the P2 side.

My hands are actually tired. I have not really been practicing this hard since I taught myself Sentinel in Marvel 2.

Yeah I can get 3-4 on the P1 side pretty consistently but my brain is stupid and when I get on the player 2 side everything just feels weird.

You know, I still haven’t mastered FADC? I can do R.Seismos all day on the 1P side, but I do eventually mess up. I can get 2 or 3 on the 2P side before I mess up.

But yeah, do you think I NEED to get FADC down?

FADC is much more important that Rapid Seismo. As song as you can do Seismo 2x you should be fine.

I can do it on both sides for the record, I just screw up too much on P2, to many accidental H TK’s. But’s not a big deal, Rapid Seismo’s really aren’t that good, people just fixate on them.

FADC’s on the other hand… that shit is top level broken.
