Woman's Tourney Thoughts

Coming out of nowhere with a bunch of half-remembered evolutionary biology bullshit that had literally nothing to do with what was happening on screen just so Professor Keits could sound like the smartest guy in the room was really awful. He really earned that uncomfortable silence.

“During the slave period, the slave owner would breed his big black with his big woman so that he would have a big black kid that’s where it all started.” - parallel universe Keits announcing at the NBA, explaining why there are a lot of black players in basketball

That’s it. I can’t take this anymore. I promised myself I wouldn’t comment on any of this threads regarding the women-only SSF4 tournament because of the comments on the topic are not worth responding to. But Enough is enough. If you’re a woman and you were offended by how the people at Evo were treating you, you have one of two choices. Boycott Evo or get better at SSF4 and show those who judge people based on appearances just how ignorant they are. In case you haven’t, most players in the U.S. fighting game community treat other players like crap regardless of gender hence why we’re not taken very seriously by Japanese players or anybody else for that matter.

Just keep playing and improve your skills so you can show them what you’re made of.

No, that’s not it. It’s because the men in our species evolved as the hunters and fighters, so males got bigger, stronger, faster, etc. Why do you think Men’s scores/times/etc in the Olympics are always better than the females? Am I saying women should just quit and stay in the kitchen? Hell no, we aren’t animals anymore but we still have that biology from when we were. Pointing that out is NOT wrong.

First of all, I laughed at this comment. Good shit  At least someone here is still lively and not freaking the fuck out because of sexism.

Second, while it was unnecessary, I don’t think Keits’ little psychology class was offensive or erroneous for that matter. he should have shut up because he should know that people would interpret it wrong, but he did say things as they are. Women and Men like different thing because they think different, generally.

yeah no one should actually take responsibility for their own bullshit. it’s entirely on the onus of a subjugated social class to rise up from their own oppression.

black people deserved to be slaves until they had it in them to sack up and stop being slaves, is basically what you’re saying.

my girlfriend was watching it with me, she almost fell asleep. but when it came to the mens finals she couldn’t get off her feet. I gotta say, I never saw so many matches that almost ended in time outs.

That’s a pretty exaggerated analogy there.

“Men are physically stronger than women, therefore women are biologically predisposed to enjoying having cameras zoomed in on their tits and also picking girl characters in fighting games.” - Evolutionary biology expert and SRK forums superstar “Tanner”

It’s exaggerated to illustrate the point. Obviously it isn’t 1:1 to this situation, but it speaks to the problem.

@COUM: Didn’t inkblot just ban you?

Because that’s what I’m talking about moron. Inkblot must have messed up when banning you… I’m sure you’re troll ass will be out of here soon.

Kanta I appreciate your laidback attitude and I don’t really want to be the sort of poster here to stir up shit (I barely post as it is), and I hate to say it but COUM knows what’s up and doesn’t deserve to be banned.

If we took the women who competed this year and started to stack them up against the top 8 and then lower it’d be interesting to see where they would fall on the scale of meh to god like. Where did Kayane place this year in the main tournament(not the womens which she got first)?

I look forward to Evo Japan to see how well Kayo does since I believe many hail her as the best woman SSF4 player.

How long do people think it will take till women not only come out in bigger droves to fight tournaments but start to stay toe to toe with males? I personally think maybe 5-10 years, but that’s just me.

@Deisied: Did you see the other thread he posted? I honestly cant find anything to agree with him there. and here he’s just distorting Tanner’s words.

inkblot said he’d ban him. I don’t care, as it doesn’t make me happier or sadder, I just thought it was weird.

Probably when it starts happening in other competitive sports/games/activities. Never. I wouldn’t mind being proven wrong but it won’t happen.

I suspect you only know peoples attitude towards female players based on internet forums. In my experience (and I’m sure anyone else with similar experience can verify) 99% of girls who have attended arcades, or meetups, to play SF have been welcomed as warmly as anyone else.

She was apparently very close to making it out of pools.

I’ll say this much: y’all should reads the links he posted in the OP, regardless of his abrasiveness in the rest of the thread.

and to put it another way:

there’s no universe in which this shouldn’t be a bannable offense and what COUM said should.

This isn’t a sport or physical based man. This is mental and hand related. You make it seem like men have all these tools women will never be able to have to compete in a videogame.

I openly admit I have lost games of Mario Kart and Super Smash to my nieces—and I TRIED to win. I know that’s a lame analogy or whatever, but playing videogames is NOT rocket science nor is it physically demanding. Professional gaming’s biggest requirement is a LOT of free time. Yeah natural skill helps too just like with anything, but it’s not the end all especially with gaming.

Have you seen KayoPolice play Crimson Viper? She’s good…really good. I don’t know her fighting game history, but imagine if she had started playing at the same age as Daigo, Justin Wong, etc in fighting games. I think it’s pretty safe to say all those years and games + the skill she’s shown just on SSF4 alone would have her being one of the best in the world not just “best woman.”

If there’s a little girl out there who just now started on SSF4, and kept going with it and other fighting games over the next 10 years as her main hobby and took it to the next level then there is a GREAT chance to have women meet up with men.

It could start happening as soon as next year as far as women becoming closer to men in skill level and bringing more female players in general. There just has to be something out there or in the women themselves that will get them excited about the intricacies of high level SF. So that they will have fun practicing the things that we use at high level play and learn to use them without fear under pressure like we do.

Like Kayane specifically mind game wise played very smart but her execution was pretty off on basic Chun BnB’s. She also did a lot of “making up” BnB’s that weren’t reliable and dropped those as well. Arguably Burnyourbra’s execution was better than Kayane’s but her mind games weren’t quite on the same level. There needs to be more of a cohesiveness between execution and mind games of the players. Sherryjenix is in a worse boat than both of them. While her “Viper” execution isn’t bad with her ability to pull out insta SJC burn kicks and thunder knuckle feints without too much trouble she has trouble doing Viper’s basic link combos. Stuff u shouldn’t be dropping at high level tournaments. When u get in close range u wanna maximize your damage output during footsies with your c.MP and s.MP links. She also doesn’t use enough c.HP at all and Viper is hilariously less scary without the use of c.HP either as a footsie or in combos. Her footsie game in general isn’t that great and she almost never really looks for situations to counter hit or whiff punish with c.MP, c.MK or c.HP. She just throws those special moves out there and that will just get her killed by good players.

It will take time but it can be done. I really liked the women’s tournament though because it at least was a ground work for what can be improved on for the future with the women players. The only way to really better yourself is to see yourself for all of your mistakes and there’s no better way to do that than to do it on the Evo floor in an event where your mistakes will specifically be pointed out in another tournament with other women.

My message to the women is basically to be excited about learning about high level play in SF. Ask questions and study what the other high level players do. Don’t be afraid to have your own style and be yourself but don’t limit yourself and not use basic techniques that all top players use. There’s a reason those top players use those techniques so learn them and use them to your advantage. Practice your execution in training mode as much as possible also. Watch vids of your play and any combos that you drop just drill them in training mode over and over till u can do that combo 5 times or more in a row without fail. Learn your option selects and safe jump setups as well. Don’t even play this game competitively if u can’t footsie, safe jump or option select. ** Overall don’t worry about wins and losses. If you’re playing casuals lose 90 times against a player way better if u have to. Just be excited about what you’re LEARNING as you are losing.** You win through learning and losing and learning and losing and learning until you finally stop doing what makes u lose and win.
