So you’re also against minor league baseball getting trophies, 'cause those trophies should go to the real teams in the majors? Oh, nevermind, there just shouldn’t be a minor league because that means that people are being rewarded for not being the best, and only the people who are #1 in the world should ever get a reward for any achievement.
Win a local tournament? YOU GET NOTHING DOGG JUSTIN WONG WOULD BODY YOU SO YOU ARE NOT GETTING A TROPHY HARHAR!
Jesus Christ, how dysfunctional is the public education system in Nova Scotia?
In b4 inkblot closes this thread and accuses anyone who criticises this sexist and anachronistic idea as ‘trolls’
can’t wait for the european-only tournament next year to showcase our ability and encourage more euro players. Oh wait. We don’t help them get media attention and sponsors.
What I think would be ideal is to have female only matches at smaller tournaments or maybe weekly hook ups to provide some sort of invitation to women who are interested in playing, but I think Evo should be for people confident enough in their skills more than that sort of invite to female players. However, some of the players have said that because Evo’s so hyped they were more aware of the female only tournament & it worked out for them so I do see the point of said invitational.
As far as the award goes, don’t be so salty. They’re given out already, it’s over. Spend more time practicing if you want a better chance at those awards. For those in SoCal, Valle’s got WNF every week, it’s opening up at a new venue & there are a variety of games to include people who don’t just play SSFIV. If you don’t have that in your area, then work with friends to start having hook ups. Hell, there were hook ups all the time in the small college town where I lived before in MO and several of those players did really well in their selected games.
Back to women’s invitational & the players for a minute though - I was listening to some guys behind me hypothesize on why women generally avoided playing games especially when a lot of men were around and someone cited fear of assault. Sorry if this was you, btw, and you’re reading this now, but I could not have laughed harder. I don’t know that any of us are really afraid of being assaulted by many of you guys.
What’s been the thing that has stood out the most for me as far as the quality of female players is that when we play with some guys they talk to us like we’re morons. It’s ridiculous to watch a bunch of guys CLEARLY throw matches because they think it’s going to make a girl feel better. I’m not even suggesting that some of you go all out and beat someone down in the blink of an eye, but throwing a match is not any more likely to help a girl to learn. Are you here to help us or are you trying to get laid? If it’s the latter, why not try another method while simultaneously helping us to get better?
I remember within the last two months I went to a hook up & heard some guys who I’d seen playing tell a girl that ‘Actually this is a bad match up for me’ and proceed to obviously lose to her. I say obviously because I was watching them do things they never do. They threw it. I’ve even seen people considered top players do this for girls and of course they make a big scene about it ‘Oh I got my ass beat by a girl’ and maybe she’s all smiles & feels good for that moment but she’s not going to get better like that. In fact, I’ve seen some of those girls get pretty cocky when they don’t have the skills to back it up. So please be real with us. We don’t need more girls beating their friends in a basement and telling everyone that they hold various tournament victories under their belt.
Minor leagues get the same trophys as the major leagues?
I don’t like bad analogies.
Also, if this tournament would have been a “beginners tournament” instead of a women only one, I don’t think most would have complained. So that is another problem with the analogy, since I assume minor/major is separated by skill or age, not gender.
the grand finals weren’t bad at all. kayane obviously knows how to play, and her zoning and antiairing made burnyourbra look worse than she really is. once ken’s air options are shut down, chun li’s footsies dominate, and he has to proceed very cautiously. so credits to both of them.
“Trophys”? I’m not crazy about people who can’t spell.
Anyway, the SSF4 invitational winner did not receive the same prize as the SSF4 general tournament winner. The cash payout was hardly a sliver of what Daigo and Ortiz received. There was, however, the magical golden stick, which has recently become the biggest deal in the fighting game community, even though nobody last year seemed to give a shit about what specific trophy was given.
How about the guy who got a golden stick in the raffle? Was he/she a deserving recipient? I mean, it’s not like we’re talking about some promotional product, we’re talking about THE GOLDEN FIGHTSTICK!!! The one prize given to Evo champions since they were announced waaaay back on June 23rd of this year. For almost an entire month these have been prized above all else, and exactly like Lord Stanley’s Cup, they are held in the highest regard as the rarest trophies in the world. The bearer of the golden fightstick can go meet Willy Wonka and get all the candy they can eat!
Seriously though, you didn’t get a shiny gold stick, a girl did (who happens to be a very good player). Boo fucking hoo. How can we as a community possibly endure such injustice?
I’m not a native speaker though. Maybe you’re not crazy about foreigners either.
Yeah, but those in the minor league hardly makes the same amount of money as those in major… Money wasn’t even mentioned. Money is not a trophy. Can’t you just admit it was a bad analogy and move on? Or make a better one.
That’s all I’m saying, no need to go guns blazing with your other arguments at me, it’s wasted time. I came here to check out the discussion, not enter the fray myself.
Does anyone else find it funny that people are saying a match between a chun-li that can’t finish any combos and the epitome of an xbox live scrub is good?
Seriously though, if you’re not a native speaker, I apologize.
It’s not a bad analogy if you read what I was responding to. Sektr wrote,* “Awarding a potentially extremely valuable trophy to the winner of a tournament where the only participants were people who did not break the top 100 with the exception of one of the participants is ridiculous and understandably upset quite a few people.”* He did not write “the same type of trophy”, he wrote, “a … valuable trophy.” Both major and minor league baseball award winners receive valuable trophies that could possibly become extremely valuable over time, and minor league batters aren’t generally within the top 100 batters in the world. Therefore, my analogy works when read with Sektr’s statements.
If you put it that way, I guess it does work… Sort of :razzy:
Sorry to rant, but bad analogies thrown around in internet arguments is my pet peeve.
Anyway, did the women winners recieve medals and a fancy glass trophy like the other games? I can’t remember. That’s the real trophies of the tournament, though ironically they probably won’t become as valuable as the golden sticks (if anything becomes valuable at all, which I doubt). Not that it matters.
If I may add to the real discussion though, after thinking for a bit, I think having a beginners/low-skill tourney for any gender would be the best way to lower complaints, even if the womens is kept. I think some new/bad players feel a red carpet was rolled out for girls on questionable grounds, but they got no such attention.
But the problem is to determine who would be allowed in such a tournament.
Also I kinda wonder what the dropoff rate will be for women players when/if the learning wheels/red carpet is removed. Or what happens when some girls become so good they totally dominate the women’s tourney - will it still attract new girls? Some have said in this thread(or we’ve been told of girls saying) that they became interested in trying because they think they can do better.
i’ll add that in versus competition the awarding is never based on skills but on victory, regardless of the motives behind the competition.
you can only complain about a decision that was taken months before the tourney. And if you did, and had the organizers listened to you, well, what would it make to the EVO brand if the female competitors actually put on a great show with nothing to win at the end ?
I’m someone very calm and used of people talking shit. But now I’m very mad about something and i have to tell it.
Instead of saying we don’t deserve something or why is there a women side or that watching women tournament is a waste of time because it’s not good and other stuff like that…, why don’t you tell us our weaknesses and the things that we have to improve ?! Always talking about a low level of game, so nobody can tell what is bad in the styles of each female player that played on finals ? And since you have good criticize side, i’m sure you have a lot of things to say !
You have the videos, it seems that you watched them to criticize as you can because you’re frustrated of this tournament. Don’t you realize that women are trying to do their best in this fighting community full of machos and frustrated people ? (FORTUNATELY there is a women tournament so that they can feel reassured there is not only that !) and if nobody tells them their weaknesses but only things to discourage, it will be hard for them to improve.
I’m not waiting for people to say i played well if i didn’t, but i can’t agree with people that say i played bad if they don’t say why. Of course i did a lot of mistakes. I missed many combos but i know how to do them, finals made me too excited to be able to have a good execution and i know it’s something i have to improve. I still begin the game but i feel really excited by the fact i still have a lot of things to learn about Chun and SSFIV system.
Fortunately i have some players in france that can tell me what my weaknesses are. But i’m not sure about the other female players that played on the finals ! What I only see is crap things to make us feel like we don’t know how to play.
I talked to the women in this tournament and i know they want to be stronger.
So please, take a time for reflexion.
PS : And if there are people who still understimate women from this tournament, i can FT5 you next year ! No need to talk !
Kayane got really far in the main tournament. I’m sure she could beat anybody who posts in this thread. I enjoyed watching the women’s tourney finals on the live stream.
