Wisconsin: Breaking Controllers Since The 90s and Probably Before Then...LOL!

It’s not a call for one, just a suggestion. I don’t want to be the only one doing something. Transportation will definitely be an issue on Madison’s end, and you will be on call. But once we can all work something out, we should totally get together (as fwiends).

Nick -

I’m going to Olympic Lanes Friday night with a handful of quarters to check out the 3S machine… maybe I’ll get lucky and find someone there who plays. I’ll also ask if/how much the owner is willing to sell it.

i gotta to be at work at 10pm on friday, so if you wanna make it an early night i’ll jam along with you to olympic. i did say before that it was a bastard machine right? originally a vf machine than a new generation machine and finally a 3s machine.

oh and its a token place, so bring dollars. for the token machine. they also have ski-ball. so start practicing.

What kind of controls do they have? Happ stick/buttons, standard Capcom 6-button layout? I once saw a Tekken 4 game set in a strange cabinet with a 4 button-diamond shaped configuration; totally used for some sort of puzzle game no doubt, then Tekken was just thrown in there… Not fun.

happ i’m guessing. american layout with big, largely spaced concave buttons. the sticks had an octagon gate, took me some getting used too, but jerry’s hugo was on point with the octagon.

if you were to buy it, swapping the sticks and buttons out is not even an issue.

As long as it’s standard Capcom 6-button layout; I’ve seen many fighters thrown into weird cabinets with strange button placements and/or not enough buttons at all. I really hope they’re selling it, if it’s reasonable, I’ll probably buy it… just need to get a Versus City cabinet setup and I’ll be good to go.

I’ll call you on Friday. I’m only bringing $5, so if we finish way early, did you want to go back to your crib and play some 3S until you have to goto work?

That is really, really sad. Add to the fact that alot of us live far apart and/or do not drive, and WI is looking sorrrry as hell. What are we going to do to fix this?

throw more tournaments… why does every tournament have to be a big event… just run some tournaments

If more people drove, I’d be more willing to host gatherings, but it seems like nobody in this state drives consistently except Keits, j1n, and me. That sucks sometimes.

Okay, bro. I know you’re just trying to voice your opinion, but this is now the second time you’ve gotten on here, making it sound like tourneys are easy to do. Don’t take this for anything other than face-value, but:

If you think they’re so easy to run, why don’t you man up, and run one? I’m sure WI would come even if no one but WI comes. If you’re trying to hold a tourney, like, next week, good luck having anyone show up. When you guys all get together and play, that’s not a tourney; that’s called, well…a “get-together.” There’s a bit of a difference.

Usually we have a get together, and run tournies at it. (webster’s, andrew’s)

Andrew - You need to find us a milwaukee venue. I dont think I want to do another event in green bay, but milwaukee sounds really good. Its just a matter of getting people to bring TVs, which i had a lot donated to me for the weekend up here (and could not pull that off down there)

you can stop right there, i’ve run at least 6-7 tournaments in wisconsin, in fact, i’ve run more tournaments in wisconsin then anyone in this thread, other than webster

i’ve even thrown in pot bonuses out of my own pockets, etc

and no that doesn’t count ones at peoples houses or any other bullshit

i’m looking for someone else to take the wheel

and besides it would make no sense for me to run like, a 3rd strike tourney because I haven’t even touched the game in like 3 years or whenever i played with andrew and them, short of a few matches and

if I ran an SNK games tournament I don’t think a lot of people would come (too many whites in WI)

and

DR is dead in WI so we are waiting for T6 to come out and we’ll start doing monthly whenevers

also if anyone has been paying attention, devildigimon has been running monthlies at pauls, so why not come down or show some interest in that and we could get some side tournaments going since we’ll have the setups and people, the next run he is running will not only have tekken dr, but SC2 (or 3, i forget)

he was even running tournaments in racine every month a year or so ago and there’d always be like 30 people there, playing all types of fighting games, probably like 10 different tournaments, and they were way fun

so if people are actually interested in getting something together, why not talk to him and try to get something going because i know he always puts forth a lot of effort when tryign to get things going when other people will just come on here and complain

also there’s more players out there who don’t post on SRK, i mean

look at Antonio, he doesn’t even read this site, but he beat everyones ass in alpha2, alpha3, and street fighter 2 in green bay

For those that don’t know devildigimon = digimonemporer = Webster = me!!!

And Dan, that was the most inspiring post I have ever seen u post about me ever. Thanks, that means a lot…really.

And of course I can add games to the tournament line up. In May’s tournament there is SSBB and DR. And in June’s I’ll more than likely add 3S and T6 to the line up.

And Dan is right, I have ran more tournaments than anyone in WI. But that isn’t possible without people helping out and contributing.

Do u guys want in on a little secret…another way to contribute is to play other games that may be featured at the tournament. The more people that participate, the more hype there is. Even if u don’t want to play in the initial tournament…at least TRY games u might not like in casuals. Why do u guys think I started playing 3S again. To support our WI 3S team.

I practice what I preach…24/7.

If u want a link to the tournament threads I posted…they are below:

http://tekkenzaibatsu.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=107511

And remember there are more gamers out there than those who post on forums. All levels of comp. I mention this because some people allow the number of post on a forum, dictate how many people will show up to the tournament. And that shouldn’t be.

So anyways, if people don’t mind coming to Racine (since it WILL be headquarters for Tekken 6 and we are garunteed 3 states coming to play…and I KNOW the play other fighters like 3S, Smash, and etc.)…I’ll definetely take charge of the tournaments ran in WI. I don’t mind the stress, it’s hella fun actually.

Just lemme know…

I don’t doubt that you have. However, I’m not quite sure what kind of tourney you’re after here. Are you proposing that you guys (WI) just have a super-small, state exclusive, “somebody’s living room”-type tourney, or are you saying that they should just go all out again, like Gamma Bowl, and run another big tourney? Considering the information that I’ve gathered from WI, it seems as though you guys are in kind of the same boat as us down here around Champaign – not a very big scene, and what scene there is is scattered 1 maybe 2 hours away. I’m just saying, and I could be very wrong, what’s the point in running a tourney against the same 7 or so guys you play all the time? Having a get-together at someone’s place and having a friendly, little tourney there is hardly the same as having a big, well-planned tourney where things are at stake. You can’t even really compare the attitude that players have at each. I mean, hypothetically, if you guys were to start holding weekly tourneys at someone’s house, I almost think that it takes away the essence of what a tourney really is: people playing at their best. When people know that nothing is on the line except bragging rights amongst their friends for the evening, and if they’re playing shitty well, hey, there’s always next week, and the next week, and the next week, and so on, it just degrades their motivation to play their hardest. I think that just having friendly get-togethers once in a while is a really good thing. It keeps you on your toes and in practice. However, I also believe that if you start considering every, little gathering a “tournament” you lose the mentality needed for when you enter a real tourney.

I guess what I’m saying is that I was a bit confused as to what you were considering a tournament. I mean, little, tiny gatherings of friends aren’t really all that tournament-ish, and having a big-extravagant tourney takes time and money. Really, I guess none of this is even my business; I don’t even live in WI. lol I was just sharing my opinion, that’s all. Honestly, I think whatever keeps you guys in practice the best is what you should do.

Something to brighten the mood!

I whole heartedly agree with this…:wgrin:

So I’ma keep running our monthlies. But we as a group should be focusing on our next MAJOR EVENT. And we best plan it around T6, since that would guarantee the most people.

See, man, I think monthlies are a nice, well-spaced way to do things like small, local tourneys. They’re far enough apart that you’re not inclined to say, “Screw it, we can always do it next week.” At the same time, however, they’re also close enough together that they don’t really give you enough time to slip out of practice. If we had enough people out here, that’s what I’d like to be doing. Unfortunately, though, all of our good players are up in Chicago, and Capps Indigo pretty much has that angle covered with his weekly’s. Poor Champaign…

i dunno man, i always had about 15-25 or more people at our little arcade tournaments, sometimes more, if games like sc2/3 or third strike were run, how much more could you ask for, gamma bowl got, like what, 50 some people?

Anyway, it is good to have a “major” every now in then, but for now we should try to get more people involved on a regular basis as far as monthlies, and work our way up to a big event again, instead of everyone waiting around for months to have a tournament in their own state.

It rough when arcades are closing down in chicago and up here where we used to run shit. Nickle City is a decent venue, but they didn’t even run MWChallenge this year…

So why not try to run some shit at Pauls every couple months or so, it certainly wouldn’t hurt. I have run 3 Tekken tournaments there, and with them getting T6 in a week or so, it would be a good place to start running things again. I’ve run 3 or 4 tournaments there myself, and Paul is open to having events like that there. Plus the venue is pretty good, not cramped like NC or just thrown in some back room like it was in Indy.

We used to run tournaments in Milwaukee all the damn time before Aladdin’s closed, and if people from out of state, namely IA and IL came, they came, if not, we still had a bunch of people and always had a good time, so I think that we can get the same kind of thing going at Paul’s in Racine. It’s great that it’s even closer to Chicago then Milwaukee was, though not too much farther than people coming from, say, Green Bay.

We need to start being more competitive. Everyone knows that WI Tekken is strong, and 3S is getting there, with a couple people placing at BBQ, but we need to remain competitive to attract people out here to want to play with us in whatever we are playing (SF, Tekken, SC, gay ass smash bros, whatever).

Anyway the point is, no it is not that much of a big deal to run a “big” tournament over a small one but if we are planning on having another “big” event, why not try to get the ball rolling and start running things locally and get as many people as we can to show, while doing our best to attract people from out of the area?

Oh ya another thing, I’m disappointed that there isn’t going to be anything else going on in GB, because everyone that came for Tekken at least really liked the venue a lot, and I know everyone that came to that event would definately go again.

Don’t be suprised if I actually do try to promote the shit out of events coming up at Paul’s in Racine, because they are getting T6 very soon, so I want to get something going like we did before in Milwaukee back in the day when Jose/I/whoever ran Tekken and Andrew ran 3S and whatever else.

There’s people out there, they might not post on SRK, but we gotta pull them back out of the woodwork despite the arcades closing down, and maybe try to get more people playing, especially people that were afraid to play “competitively”, even if it is just a few more…

Hell, webster knows every single scrub in racine, I bet if he got them all out to play WHATEVER it would be a big start.

I see both points Syxx and Flexo are making. I suppose Paul’s in Racine would be the best thing WI has in terms of location, space, availability, and manager support for monthlies AND actual tourneys. But there are problems that arise when even getting monthlies going. (1.) Soooooo many people do not drive in this state, it’s retarded. (2.) People’s work schedules do not permit them to make the monthlies. (3.) Games played are too varied. That isn’t always bad, but when we’re trying to concentrate our efforts and level up in a particular game (3S, GG), it’s tough when you only have 2-3 serious players out of 30 people.

Web, start posting your monthlies here in the WI thread; barely anyone who posts on SRK posts on those boards you linked. If it’s on a weekend, and I don’t work, I wouldn’t have a problem with coming to Paul’s, as long as he’s cool with PS2 setups all over the place.

Id drive down for monthlies if i could get the time off.

I’m sorry to disappoint about the green bay venue we used, but unles the owner’s attitude changes, its a place i really don’t want to deal with again. Yeah, the building was nice and he was great the day of the event, but leading up to it and right after, he went back to caring more about the game of call of dute 4 he was playing than bringing the fighting game community’s attention to his establishment.
