Will the current arcade sticks be compatible with the next generation of consoles?

I have an XBOX Madcatz TE that I love but wanted to get a new stick. The problem is with the new consoles coming out in a few months, I don’t want to buy a new stick and only be able to play with it for less than a year and have it be obsolete.

Thank you in advance.

We won’t know until they come out.

Wii U games should be compatible with the Tatsunoko vs Capcom stick as a CC controller though.

The stick itself won’t be obsolete. The PCB will be.

This is Tech Talk after all.

Are all old games gonna be playable on the new consoles? Else this question is moot anyways, as you’re still gonna have to use the stick to play your X360/PS3 games.

We already know that the DualShock 3 WON’T be compatible (although the Move will), as said above, we’ll have to wait what Sony says. Personally, I think that we’d better be prepared for disappointment.

That being said, it’s not like we’ll be able to play any current titles anytime soon - at least not until Sony figures out if this whole streaming service is going to work. As for the XBox, all the info being leaked out (if it can be believed) seems to point out that the controllers will use different tech and won’t be 360 compatible. You can kiss 360 game compatibility goodbye as well.

With Capcom vs. SNK 3 already announced for PS4 though, I hope there are options to play with a stick when it does come out, though!

CvS3 for PS4… dont play man, it was Mr. Wizard’s April Fools…

Other than that, I think you are correct, the current internal bits will probably be useless, just look at how MS put digital signatures on their stuff so they could get licensing cash, and control the peripherals. Sony might continue to allow regular USB connections… we can only hope.

Aww Damn… I didn’t even bother to check the comments on that one, and being new to the site, didn’t even know that it was a rehashed AFD joke! Shame on me… I guess I got suckered into it so easily 'cause a) I totally forgot about AFD, and b) I wanted it to be true!

Anyway, Arc System Works DID say that they’d like to create something fresh for PS4, so either way we’ll want sticks!

if Sony is smart they will keep their wired controllers working as HID class devices.
You are screwed when it comes to what ever the next Xbox is,
Wii U is compatible with controllers that have to connect to the Wii Remote first.
Nothing is known for the new Steam console from Valve
And the Ouya is supposed to have bluetooth and USB HID device support, I going to test this out when I have a chance.

I have my doubts that Steam console will ever be a viable platform…

Without support from known software developers, not enough people will buy it so the case for controllers is moot. Open-source consoles, consoles for the masses have always been looked down with general disgust by the hardcore gaming crowd. People want assurances of software support and they generally look on dark horse entries with suspicion or laugh at them.

Consoles like this have been tried before and they failed to even reach market or like Pippin (Mac-derived console) were so obscure they might as well have died in a prototype shop!

Nintendo is looking very weak console-wise… It wouldn’t surprise me if the Wii U is their swansong in the home console market. I suspect the Big N will still produce portables but have my doubts about the future of their console development.

Toodles brought this up before and I strongly believe this WILL be the case unless Sony works its mysterious ways as it has in the past (lay flat on their butts and make no changes): they WILL probably have some kind of product/security chip in the next-gen controllers. Aside from the PS2-compatible PS3’s, there was never much of a controller issue on the PS3. I used an HRAP 2 SA and other PS2-era joysticks with no problem on the fighting games aside from having to reconfigure buttons for Street Fighter IV.

All said, I wish mods would just stickie this thread because it’s the third, fourth time the question has come and it will continue to be asked at least a month or two after the PS4 gets released.

The steam box will be just a PC running on ubuntu linux, possibly using valve’s own fork just for steam. So any kind of usb controller should work, although you might need to install your own software.

Makes you wonder why they even bother to have the “U” in USB X_x

Of course with the rumors of the need for constant internet connectivity with MS’s new machine it might make next gen compatibility for your 360 stick a moot point unless you like giving a company that apparently enjoys dissing their customers, turning indie devs off and is considering spying on you. MS better have an awe-inspiring presentation for their new system next month :expressionless:

Ubuntu? Valve made a statement on what Distro they are using? I would think that Valve would use a custom in-house distro for their box.
You are also assuming that Valve does not *Lock down *their console to prevent user mods.

Keep in mind technically the PS2 and PS3 native firmware(s) is a derivative of Linux/Unix. The approx $400 (not including licensing fees) Dev Kit for the PS2 turns the game console into a working Linux PC.

The only consoles that don’t run of some derivative of linux or unix is the Dreamcast, Xbox and Xbox 360 (Which all uses MS code). (No I am not including older 8 and 16 bit consoles in that statement).

Ubuntu is their supported distro, and they are also splitting off their own Steam fork

They are making Steam Box a very open platform , both for hardware and for software, and you can see their CES Interview for more details.

It looks like they’re aiming for a generic living room PC, making it a bit less closed in exchange for their current DRM setup (steam in other words). Giving consumers more freedom in what they do with it, in exchange for a unified DRM. All the details on what they’re doing is a bit up in the air, but it’s much more exciting than the top down approach Sony and Microsoft are taking.

Ummm…

You do realize that even AFTER they release the new systems, there will be developer support for BOTH the XBox 360 and PS3 for at least three more years???

The PS2 survived through 12 years. TWELVE years! The PS3 and XBox 360 have been around barely over half as long as the PS2 was. What makes you think they’re dead already???

Fighting Games were the domain of the PS2 until 2009! They only took off on the PS3 and XBox 360 after Street Fighter IV was released. Even now, the software selection on the current systems is a fraction of what it was on the PS2 with all the Capcom and SNK game collections released during the lifespan of that system.

I personally never understood the business of throwing away old hardware and games myself… especially when several prominent systems still aren’t emulated so well on PC. Right now, emulation is good through the 16-bit era but not much beyond that unless you have the fastest, most powerful processors and graphics cards on the market.

No sirree, the third party PCB boards (Cthulu boards, Cerberus, PS360+) should do fine for quite a whiles yet… Plenty of us still have our retro systems and no intention of ditching the current-gen consoles any time soon, either. We, the older generation of videogame players, also have no illusions unlike some younger people here that the companies automatically owe consumers the most convenient upgrade paths – ie, we’ll be able to keep all our games and hardware and they’ll be compatible with the next-gen systems. Again, backwards compatibility is an anomaly and it has an impact on constraining software development, making next-gen systems actually COST more to produce, and discouraging new tech development, too. Part of why Windows is such a buggy operating system is because of all the old code that has to be maintained to keep older programs running and satisfy a customer base (the government, businesses) that drags their feet in upgrading their computers! It’d be nice if that legacy code could be ditched and the OS could actually be streamlined and made more efficient and reliable.

The peripheral manufacturers like Hori and Mad Catz would eventually go out of business if they and the first-party manufacturers DIDN’T make last gen system controllers incompatible with the new generation. They don’t like hearing people say “why can’t we keep our old controllers?” They WANT you to buy the new gear – and it’s actually advantageous for that to happen, too. They make more money AND stay in business forcing people to buy new gear. Sorry, but that’s life. There are useless developments like the Wii controllers but the occasionally good developments like Bluetooth wireless and the HRAP joysticks that happen only because of forced obsolence and upgrade paths.

Yes. Only fools would throw away their old systems when the next system comes along. Then they get nostalgic and rebuy their stuff again years later on eBay.

This.

I use my stick on my PS2 to this day.

Is this good news for third party PCB boards? In theory, could it be possible to reverse engineer for a firmware update?

I have a feeling that PS360+ will sell out come mid Nov. lol

It would be nice for us, but does it make business sense for them?

Not necessarily so. There are companies who keep there technology accessible and profit pretty well.

You don’t have to have everything locked down like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
