Very likely, It is less time consuming and more efficient to do 2.5D. I kinda hate it too but sometimes time is money.
I can’t see darkstalkers working on the sf4 engine. Seems like a game that needs to use sprites.
Regardless, 2.5d is the future sadly ;(
Vampire engine wouldn’t work in SF4 engine due to a variety of reasons.
The sprite issue is the least of those problems.
And DOA4 at that.
Smash Bros has been doing it since 1999
Er, how is this a question?
3D graphics already IS the standard and has been for years.
It’s just a shame it took so many years for srk readers to acknowledge this - you guys have been missing out on some good games just because they didn’t have sprites like CFJ did…
The new Morrigan “sprite” in TvC proves that at the very least, the less complex animations from that game can already be done. Give it a few more years and some development time and we could possibly have 2.5D stuff that animates as good as DS/GG.
The way I see it, 2.5D is going to have to become the norm, just so that devs and 3D artists can cut their teeth on it and eventually come out with stuff that looks just as good, if not better than our old sprite based favorites.
Hokuto Hyakkuretsuken!! lol, couldn’t resist.
Yeah, I love seeing some variety of 2D, 2.5D, and 3D fighters as well. I also hope that none of the formats will replace the other, since there is a different format for a different purpose etc.
I like to keep an open mind, but how are those fighting games? There just pretty much movie games w/ some interactivity like Night Trap or even Time Gal.
Both SF4 and KOF XII did a great job in the graphics section. Amazing and unique graphics, but the game is still a 2d one. Now when I think about it, Blazblue also did it. I guess this is gonna be the new style, and I have no problem with it. I think the new graphics are great, and the KoF new HD Sprites can be declared as the best graphics a 2d fighter ever had
but not really hd, so there is room for some improvement.which we wont ever get.
With Guilty Gear going 2.5D and rumors of a new 3D KOF, it looks like BlazBlue is the last major fighting game still using hand-drawn sprites
Fuck you for bumping an ancient thread.
Why does the age of the thread matter if the subject is still relevant? Bumping an existing thread doesn’t make the discussion any less valid.
But instead of ignoring it or participating with a constructive reply, you throw an insult in there. So no, fuck you.
looks like it. Injustice, MK9, SF4…
This thread was from before Xrd existed. The future is here.
Well… I think it’s better think in 2 ways.
If we are going to think about some big companies such as CAPCOM or Arc System Works. I think 2.5D is going to be the standard. Arc System Works already are working on Anime Style of 2.5D and it looks awesome. CAPCOM already made dozens of fighting games using 2.5D.
However, I guess the indie developer such as Lab Zero or relatively small companies like French Bread (Maker of Melty Blood and Under Night/ inBirth). They are going to going on their own style. Making 2D, 2.5D or 3D depending on their team’s taste and budgets.
I think the fighting game market nowadays are really spread up. The tools nowadays are so great that even Indie Fighting Games can makes some decent fighting games that are better than some big companies one.
So, in conclusion. For big company? Probably Yes. But Hell no to the indie developer.
3d graphics for 2d games is going to become standard soon. Even at 1080p it’s cheaper to do 3d than 2d sprites. The actual production of 2d nowadays actually is to create a 3d model, animate it, then transfer those animation to 2d by tracing and whatnot. It was perfecting this model for BB that led GG Xrd to where it is at currently and visually I have to say it is the best approximation of what a 2d game looks like using 3d graphics that I have ever seen (barring some non-real time frameworks that get frame by frame hand editing).
If others can copy that level of 3d -> 2d conversion without sprites I would have zero issue with accepting that. Now it is just a question of if they can get that same 2d feel into the game play. 2d gameplay always seems faster and more frantic, imo. I’m really looking forward to Xrd and seeing how much of the feel it can emulate as it seems to have gotten the look done better than anyone else.
